Do you think you would be able to persevere through many difficult obstacles wihout giving up? In True Grit by Charles Portis, Mattie Ross a 14 year old, her father was murdered by a man named Tom Chaney. Throughout the book she has to overcome many hardships and get through many obstacles to avenge her father’s death.
Mattie is constantly talking about a person having “true grit” throughout the book. Her definition of having true grit isn’t being courageous and she isn’t referring to dirt. Having true grit to Mattie means having a rough side and being fearless. After Mattie’s father was murdered she was determined to avenge her father’s death at any cost. Before Mattie could go out and search for the man who killed her father she needed to attend to some of her father’s business. She needed to talk to man named Stonehill about some ponies that her father had purchased right before he was killed. In this scene of the book Mattie shows her grit because Stonehill didn’t want to buy the ponies back and Mattie showed her persistence and her abrasiveness. Eventually Mattie says that she was going to get her lawyer involved and he offered her two hundred dollars but she didn’t take it. Mattie’s wanted three hundred and fifty for the ponies but she told Stonehill that she would settle for three hundred and twenty-five. Another scene where Mattie shows that she is fearless and has a great amount of grit is when she shoots Tom Chaney and the recoil of the gun sends her flying into a hole. During the fall Mattie manages to get stuck upright in a small hole she tries to push herself out with her left arm and she realized that her forearm was bent in an unnatural attitude and she notices that it’s broken. While she was down there she see...

...he boarding house and got his rifle. Frank tried to stop Tom from returning to the barroom and Tom raised his rifle and shot Frank in his forehead killing him instantly. Tom Chaney has grit and doesn’t care about anyone but himself. Having grit isn’t always necessarily a positive thing. In Tom Chaney’s falls into a different definition of grit than Mattie or Rooster do.
The strength to persevere and keep going are traits that are something everyone should learn to have. No matter what you are going through if you have that mentality or mind state I feel like you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Mattie had her mind set on avenging her fathers death and wanted to do it at any cost and she wouldn’t stop until she’s had her justice. That was her motivation, maybe something can motivate you to keep persevering through the many obstacles in your life.
In this article Emily Hanford is taking information from Angela Duckworth’s findings on the research of ‘grit’. Hanford quotes Angela Duckworth definition of ‘grit’ as , “‘sticking with things over the very long term until you master them.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford also quotes Duckworth’s article to then explain that the, “‘ gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon; his or her advantage is stamina.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford is thus explaining that grit is like perseverance; that a person who works hard can achieve as much as a person who has intelligence. By explaining to students that achieving in school is not just intelligence but also grit as well, it can make students realize that if they persevere in their studies they can make achievements just as a person with more
In True Grit, Charles Portis highlights Mattie Ross crossing boundaries of her vengeful reprisal for her father’s murderer, in contrast to her religious standards of forgiveness towards sinners like Tom Chaney. By doing so, Mattie encourages Rooster Cogburn to adopt a less judgmental sensibility towards criminals.
Drifters by Bruce Dawe This poem is about a family that’s always on the move, with no place to settle down for long, hence the poem was titled ‘Drifters’ to describe this family. ‘Drifters’ looks at the members of this family response to frequently change and how it has affected them. This poem is told in third person narration in a conversational tone. This gives the feeling as if someone who knows this family is telling the responder the situation of this family.
In “The Downside of ‘Grit’: What Really Happens When Kids Are Pushed to Be More Persistent?”, Alfie Kohn; an author and lecturer, claims that not everything is worthwhile especially when going at a task for an extensive amount of time. He asserts that ‘grit’ (the passion and determination when pursuing long term goals) is becoming less persuasive and credible. Kohn states that grit can cause serious issues that have real consequences. Important goals about life have changed significantly suggests Kohn. With goals comes the ability to be persistent, the author mentions. He describes that persistence is one characteristic among many that could become valuable when wanting to reach a goal,
Henry Ford is a prime example of a company unsuccessfully attempting to expand overseas. Ford realized that producing his own supply of rubber materials would drastically cut down on expenses and therefore make his own business much more successful. While Ford may not be the nicest or fairest man towards other people, everyone can agree that he has lived a very successful life, becoming famous for single-handedly revolutionizing the automobile industry. However, despite his success in America, his Fordlandia project abroad was a complete failure due to many reasons. As Fordlandia never justified its existence economically, increasingly it was billed as a civilizing mission to take American values to another country and its people.
Growing up in the projects in hard enough as it is, but throw in the fact that you are a white kid, and you have an idea of what Dalton Conley has had to grow up with. Now a successful sociologist, Dalton Conley explains in his book, the trials and tribulations he had to face in order to survive in the projects and his battle with race.
In my opinion, I have been through lots of obstacles. From one of my best friends dying to my grandmother passing, it’s hard. But I didn’t quit, I didn’t give up on life I moved on and lived for them. Purpose; be unique, not average. Growing up our biggest want is to fit in. The last thing we want to do is stand out. We should have a purpose in our life span. I want to make a difference wherever I can, and impact somebody in a massive way. Sacrifice; seek wealth not riches. A few things we sacrifice each day that go unnoticed are, Time, Money, Relationships, and health. All of those things we sacrifice leads up to us creating wealth. Not necessarily money, but having what we need to be successful. Use your wealth to change others. Even with money, don’t let it change you. I write all of this to say, I want to be the best me I can be. I constantly want to work on becoming a better version of myself. The goals I have set for myself aren’t what a normal person should believe. I am working on being unique and not average, but also keep a high quality of life and thought. If I practice these 7 keys throughout my journey, I will definitely see you all from the
One in five veterans from Afghanistan and Iraqi wars have been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by a terrifying event and mostly effects military veterans. The book Lone Survivor, written by Marcus Luttrell, is an eye witness account of the 2005 operation Red Wing that tells the harrowing story of SEAL Team 10. Throughout the book, Marcus hears voices in his head of his fallen teammates. Even today, Marcus wakes up in the middle of the night because of the terrible nightmares, which are symptoms of PTSD. There are a lot of ways to combat PTSD so our troops do not have to endure this hardship. Some of the ways to combat the disorder is to understand PTSD, detect it early, having family support and preventing it.
The movie uses the idea of what life used to be like for men and women, and then goes against that idea almost completely. Rather than having the woman character stay at home and clean and take care of the family while the Marshalls go hunt down the killer, the movie has the female lead going out and tracking down the killer as well. Women were not supposed to be independent, and they were not supposed to be able to do things on their own and provide for themselves. Instead, they were supposed to be very dependent on men, and very soft-spoken people. Mattie Ross is a prime example of how a woman can do more than what a society believes she can do. True Grit is a movie that shows how the lives of men and women have evolved since the Western era. In today’s society, the idea of gender roles does not really exist. Women are now being accepted to do things that only men were allowed to do, such as shooting guns and working outside of the

...e is easy. But this is not the reason why you should give up. Keep your hopes alive and you will be surprised of what you can accomplish if you can only set your mind to it. Because after all, you only live once, so why not try to make the most of it. Again, Sherman Alexie shows us in his book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, how the entire Spokane Reservation is facing poverty but Arnold and Mary Spirit fight for a better life. He goes through all the problems the characters face in the book, and how some choose to live the horrible condition for the rest of their lives but some keep their hopes alive and try their best to break the cycle. Therefore, learn to never give up on your dreams and always hope. Hope make the present moment less difficult to bear. No matter how hard life can get, if you only hope that tomorrow will get better, than it will
She undergoes this very long and dangerous journey because,"the initiate had someting taken from her, her family, or her society. Her quest is to reclaim it"(Harris and Thompson 50). That is to say in True Grit, Mattie is determined to reclaim her father 's horse, his gold, and his honor. Her quest begins in the late 1870 's when she proclaims," I was just fourteen years of age when a coward going by the name of Tom Chaneyshot my father...and robbed him of his life...plus two california gold pieces"(Portis 11). To clarify, her father had gotten killed by a gritless character and now she must do something about it. The next step in the separation is the "threshold". Otherwise known as the,"jmping off point...the interface between the known and the unknown...a different world of dangers and challenges"(Haris and Thompson 50). Mattie Ross 's jumping off point is when she leaves Fort Smith and crosses the river into the Indian Territory on her horse Little Blackie. She declares,"About fifty yards below the ferry slip the river narrowed and I aimed for the place, going like blazes across the sandbar. I popped Blackie all the way with my hat"(Portis 105). In this instance, she goes from a place she 's gotten to know to a different and dangerous environment without help or

Something that I have learned after overcoming this battle is that life is very unpredictable and it is up to the individual to rise above and choose the right path. This excerpt from the poem “Recovery” by Maya Angelou has given me encouragement and inspiration to move on with my life and become the best person that I can be: “A last love, proper in conclusion, should snip the wings forbidding further flight. But I now reft of that confusion, am lifted up and speeding towards the light.” I live by these words everyday because they motivate me to succeed and overcome the impossible.
