Writing is an art form that some people are blessed with being naturally talented at, and some individuals must learn and be instructed in order to become a talented writer. In our modern day American society, there is a strong need to have talented writers, so there is a large push to teach writing from grade school all the way up through college. I am an individual who was never naturally good at writing, but I was taught how to be a good writing. From my education I think I have made great strides in my ability and can pick out some qualities that distinguish good writing from bad writing. Overall, good writing takes many forms.
Writing can have many goals: to inform, to persuade, or to entertain, but in each section of writing the major
goal is to spark an interest. If an author can spark an interest in their audience, then the writing is successful. One crucial quality of sparking an interest is by passion. If the author of a piece of writing is passionate about the subject they are writing about, then it will reflect positively in their writing. Good writing is about making the audience understand what the author is trying to communicate. The more passionate the author is, the more passionate the writing will be. An audience can feel the passion the author has and that sparks an interest in the piece of writing.
While preparing for one of his college lectures, Dennis Baron, a professor and linguistics at the University of Illinois, began playing with the idea of how writing has changed the world we lived in and materials and tools we use in everyday life. This lecture slowly transitioned into “Should Everybody Write?” An article that has made many wonder if technology has made writing too easy for anyone to use or strengthens a writer's ability to learn and communicate their ideas. Baron uses rhetorical strategies in his article to portray to his audience his positive tone, the contrast and comparison of context and his logical purpose.
In “Writing to Learn: Writing across the Disciplines,” Anne J. Herrington finds different sources stating that writing is to be taken serious. Janet Emig says, "writing represents a unique mode of learning-not merely valuable, not merely special, but unique” (1) meaning that writing is far more essential than we ought to make it seem. Anne Herrington wants educators teaching in economics, history, chemistry or any other subject to guide their students into understanding why progressing their writing skills will be more helpful to them. At the end of the day, it all comes down to the educator; whether he/she wants their students to use writing as a way for students to adapt to different disciplines.
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Allen, Bunn, and Irvin are correct to say how no one is born naturally good writers. Now that we know this, we should find ways to help improve our writing skills, and
In the article, “Writing in the 21st Century,” Kathleen Yancey spells out how writing has evolved over the years. The author takes us through some key events that shaped writing into what it is today. Yancey brings the reader back to when writing was something that rarely happened outside of the classroom. “Reading.tended to produce feelings of intimacy and warmth, while writing, by way of contrast, was associated with unpleasantness – with unsatisfying work and episodes of despair – and thus evoked a good deal of ambivalence,” (Yancey 2). It was a tedious exercise that happened in schools.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
It’s an interesting question, and one that can be difficult to answer. Everybody will have his or her own idea of what makes writing “good” writing. This question depends on the individual experiences of everyone asked, and so it can be almost impossible to pin down a definite reply. In truth, there isn’t really a right answer, just a pile of suggestions and general opinions that are formed differently in every individual’s mind.
Everyone makes mistakes. It is just something people do, but they need to learn from their mistakes to become more intelligent. Humans have been messing up for thousands of years, but becoming more knowledgeable because of it. Writing is knowledge, whether it be specific information or literature containing themes and morals. It is something that has been evolving for thousands of years, and it has become one the most important developments ever.

Writing, however, transcends the earthy bonds of reality. We can take liberties in writing that allow us to float weightlessly, expand beyond the universe, and shrink to a speck. Writing has its own physical boundaries in the words we use, the structure of our rhetoric, and the standard conventions that make our words coherent. These physical boundaries can only be taught to us through exercise, through learning, what we do with the knowledge we gain from such education is entirely up to us.... ...
I have come to know that writing is the easiest way of expressing emotions and thoughts. I also realize that to be a good writer you just don’t need anything else rather than yourself or you don’t have to be perfect. You just need to be clear, specific, and should be able to make the reader feel the same way as you do while you were writing.
Another purpose for writing is to inform. Information is power. In today’s society people need a lot of information to perform, thus making information qui...
Making us not only sharpen our writing skills but develop a writing vocabulary. Personally, it is difficult to write about a topic I have no interest in writing. Yet, this will be useful in bettering my writing ability. With practice writing will become habitual. In the future I will overcome my difficulties in the writing process of proofreading, preparation, and
Good writing is often thought to be subjective; it depends on the opinion of the reader whether the writing is “good” or not. However, there are some elements that make writing inherently good or bad. The main goal of writing is to convey a message of some sort. If the message and necessary information have been transferred, then it is effective writing that makes it at least somewhat good because its purpose has been achieve. While this is one criteria for good writing, great writing expects slightly more. Great writing has to express the information it is intended to in a way that is conducive to understanding with a style and voice appropriate for the medium of the writing. We explored this idea at the beginning of the semester when we looked as eight samples of writing and
