Technology Brings People Together
It is difficult to escape the influence of technology on modern life. It lurks behind every door: the classroom, home, office, and store. There are many who are resistant to new technology, saying that technology causes harm to society. These claims are often made without the realization that technology also includes important and indispensable parts in their life such as writing and the tools for writing. Writing was one of the first technologies invented. Technology has now become so entrenched in the majority of cultures around the world that it is hard to imagine a life or society without writing. For those that maintain a majority of technology beyond writing is harmful, imagine the difficulty in writing without the help of other technologies, which includes pencils, paper, computers, printing presses, and a number of other technological aids.
In my project I attempted to write without the assistance of normal technologies that are often taken for granted. It proved a difficult undertaking. Before beginning to write I had to find something to write on. As I searched my house and yard I realized that technology-free materials are difficult to find. I eventually found a birch log by the fireplace, which was once used by Native Americans for the purpose of writing. After tearing off the bark, and shaking off the dirt I had my “paper.” The hardest part was still not over; I needed to find a replacement for the normal writing aid of a pencil or pen. I replaced ink with honey and traded a pen for a feather. My next step was the very slow process of streaking honey on the bark to form words. The honey was the same color as the birch and blended in with the wood. To f...

The wisest step is to embrace the new technologies since they are unlikely to go away. Those who have the most knowledge of new technologies are able to accomplish more, and find more options available to them in life.

In today’s society technology is everywhere, whether it be in a car, on a billboard, a laptop, or even on one’s phone. However, is all this technology a bad thing or is it truly a worldwide phenomenon. Even back during 1992, author Neil Postman wrote about how technology is both a blessing and a burden. Many people believe Postman’s views are arrogant or far-fetched, but there are also those who agree with him about the dangers of technology.
The basic astrological assumptions are not hard to grasp. For if astronomy is the study of the movements of the heavenly bodies, then astrology is the study of the effects of those movements. The astronomers of the ancient world assumed a division of the universe whereby the superior, immutable bodies of the celestial worlds ruled over the terrestrial or sublunary sphere, where all was mortality and change. It was assumed that the stars had special qualities and influences which were transmitted downwards upon the passive earth, and which varied in their effect, according to the changing relationship of the heavenly bodies to each other. They were led to postulate a single system in which the seven moving stars or planet shifted their position in relation to the earth and each other, against a fixed backcloth of the twelve signs of the zodiac.
Take a trip back in time to a place where magic reigned free and was bountiful in daily life, and in fact was the reason the legend began, a place where knights gathered around a round table, where the men honored the men and women and children of their kingdom and served their lords. Not to mention, a king that was chosen by destiny after he pulled the sword Excalibur out of a rock, this was none other than the beginning of Arthurian Legend. The legendary King Arthur and his court in Camelot are the center of Arthurian legend that defined the chivalric code that was followed for centuries in Europe by knights. Arthurian legend through stories such as Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, defined the chivalric code and exemplified its uses throughout its plot. Even before the men in these steel suits knew these characteristics, Arthurian legend was developed in its earliest stages.
My whole life I always saw astrology as just a tiny paragraph in the back of my magazine that made silly predictions about my upcoming month in its latest issue. After learning more about astrology and its origins through informational videos and online articles I am so intrigued. I learned that you have a sun sign, which is your zodiac sign that’s most commonly known, but you also have a moon sign, a rising sign and connections to the planets that all stem from something called your birth chart. Your birth chart is unique to each individual and is based off of when and where you were born and how that time and place connects to the universe and it’s relation to the planets. It was so cool to see how intricate and scientific astrology actually is and it was even cooler to be able to see how that all applies to my zodiac sign and how that relates to my personality, life and relationships with my friends and family. I don’t think it will be something I will commonly use but I did enjoy learning more about it and being able to gain a better appreciation for it and it’s concepts. I think the people who truly believe in astrology or who apply it to their every day lives most likely really enjoy making connections about things and learning more about themselves and those around
Siegel explains the usage of it and how different cultures have adapted it for their uses. The Chinese based their version of the year of people’s birth while Europeans based it on locations of the Sun, Moon and planets connected to different Zodiac signs (Siegel 2014). Nowadays, people turn to the Zodiac Table in finding some guidance into how to live their lives. Since the Zodiac table has been an idea accepted for a long time and is ingrained in many various cultures in the world, some people do not question its validity. As explained earlier just because Zodiac signs seem reasonable, it does not make Astrology a science to
These shapes called constellations became stories that have been passed down generations. Within the Constellations, there are twelve signs that astrology uses today. They are known as the zodiac signs. “Each of the twelve constellations of the Zodiac represents a time of the year, roughly a month long” (Driscoll 73). There are twelve months in a year. Many people still believe that the positions of the planets and stars foretell what is going to happen. People also think that if a person is born in a certain month, they are predetermined to have a particular personality. For example, a person born between January and February is under the Aquarius zodiac sign. They are believed to be independent, inquisitive, and outgoing. All the zodiac signs have a prediction on everyone’s birthday that’s called a horoscope. Astrologers predicted the future based on where the stars and planets are in the sky. “Astrology may seem silly, but for centuries it was considered as real as any scientific fact” (Driscoll 73). Scientist has separated astrology, the study of the zodiac signs, and astronomy, the study of the heavens. They say that astronomy can be confirmed and astrology
My belief is that the nature of our behavior is based on astronomy; hence the reason that people who share the same zodiac sign have very similar characteristics, and sometimes a combination of people with certain zodiac signs cannot get along or are very compatible. Sometimes I can tell from a person’s sign because of their behavior, and likes and dislikes. Learning more about astrology and the zodiac signs helps us to understand people and their actions. Many argue that it is coincidence, but the odds are too high to be that.
...usands of years by many cultures to answer questions not yet answerable by ordinary means. It’s core philosophical idea is that you are what happens to you, and that you can find a better meaning of yourself by carefully analyzing your origin of birth and its relationship with the positions of external celestial objects in this universe. Astrology is not a belief system, whereby there are a set of mutually supportive precepts from which you are to live your daily life, directing thoughts, words, and actions. On the contrary, astrology is the study of the positions and characteristics of celestial bodies in the belief that they have an exogenous influence on the natural course of earthly occurrences, and, thus, human affairs. In this sense, astrological readings are not meant to provide answers to personal issues, but are rather meant to be seen as a life guide.
The theory of astrology is defined as the study of celestial bodies in order to find meaning in everyday life. Astrology is deemed a pseudoscience by many, but some wonder why this distinction is true (Thagard). As explained in our text, a pseudoscience is defined as a belief or practice that is believed to be scientific, but is not based on the scientific method or fact. Barry Beyerstein, author of Distinguishing Science from Pseudoscience, explains a pseudoscience as “traceable to ancient magical beliefs, but their devotees typically play this down as they adopt the outward appearance of scientific rigor” (Beyerstein, 1995).
It’s hard to imagine walking up to a large open field in the bitter cold to write or read the latest Hunter S. Thompson book, an issue of The Onion, or this very paper. In fact, it would be downright stupid. Yet, this was the technology that I choose to use. After writing the lengthy demonstration piece (I wrote “Demo”), it became abundantly clear that the process which writing technology has undergone has been nothing short of spectacular.

Today the world revolves around different kinds of technology that are used for many things, some are necessary and some are not. Technology is a big part of our lives, and many would say we couldn’t live without it. Weather people like it or not technology is here, and it’s not going away. But a big question is; Is technology good or bad? Advancements in technology are bad For many reasons. Some are anyone who has a laptop can find someones personal information, people don’t get as much face to face interaction because they are always talking on the internet, and kids aren’t using proper grammar online, so they are losing their writing skills.

Technology has more negative effects on today’s society than positive. Due to technology in the past few decades Canine Shock Collars have been increasingly popular. Students in school pay more attention to texting than they do their classes. Violent addictive video games have made their way into American homes. Parents encourage their children to not text as much, but them to face the problem of constant communication. The Internet gives the students easier ways to cheat in school, and reinforces laziness. Internet Porn gives every bored male a chance to look at the seediest film in the comfort of his own home. Technology has taken the innocence and mystery away from the American family.
