As a millennial, I feel confident in us, in our ability to bring about change, our eagerness to make an impact and to reach our highest potential as a generational cohort.
IV. Visualization. So, I want you to image what we’ll be described as if we allow resilience, (ability to adapt and bounce back when things don't go as planned) to dominate our characters, imagine what will be said about this generational cohort if you make the choice or continue, for some of you, to allow your resilience to show more above all characters. This will not only benefit you as a person, but our generational cohort as well. We’ll be understood more and people will hopefully see ways in which we can contribute in excelling the institutions or the business and any other domain.
V. Call to action
So, I urge you to consider resilience in your characters in all your life endeavors. Remember that resilience is a person’s ability to overcome quickly from difficulties and toughness. And this might be a different process for each one of you, and for many of you it might takes weeks, months and years, but the important thing is that you consider it because your character matter and it is crucial for us as
millennials. With that being said here are some tips from Psychology today from a 2014 article on developing resilience in Character a.Being decisive~one of the biggest critical against us as millennials is that we can’t make decisions for ourselves, so overcome this generalization by being decisive. b.Maintaining a positive attitude~ maintain a positive attitude at all time (school, work, extracurricular activities) even if things don’t go your way. c. Have a positive view of yourself and confidence in your strengths and abilities. I hope this speech has made you aware of the mentality that millennials are being faced with. I also hope that you see the importance in developing resilience in character and how beneficial that can be as you enter the workplace and life situations. I hope you consider the choice, the lifestyle of having resilience.
Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future.
Most people do not actively seek out adversity, yet few can escape encountering adversity in the form of hardships and afflictions. Two people who faced great adversity in their lives were Martin Luther King Jr. and my father Brent Vickery. These men both faced adversity in different degrees and at different times and places within the United States, but what makes them similar is that their strength of character allowed them to face adversity boldly.
Resiliency is one concept that has never been the human races forte. Many things that happen in our current day and age require a great deal of perseverance and resiliency. People often will give in to the problems in their lives and learn to accept them, instead of persevering through them and working out the issues. The fact of the matter is, if you learn to persevere through problems, your life will be a lot more happy and pleasant to live. In Tennessee Williams’ play, “ A Streetcar Named Desire” suggests that you cannot give up on issues; you must be resilient to those issues and persevere to be happy.
Simon Sinek, in the YouTube video “The Millennials in the Workplace Interview”, states that Millennials need to learn balance with their social media and physical life. According to Sinek, a millennial is a person born approximately between 1984-2000. Throughout the Interview, Simon is very zealous, empathetic, apologetic, and humorous. He uses metaphors, They Say I Say, diction, and parallel structure.
Around the world, many people are faced with adversities and constant obstacles in their life that they will have to overcome. People often have to face adversities such as death, poverty, illness, disabilities, and environmental issues on a daily. Many people can overcome the adversities they are faced with, while others may struggle and need help overcoming their situation. Never the less if a person fails or succeeds in their attempt of overcoming their situation, this is still a part of their resilience.
Did you face any challenge in your life ever? What did you do to solve the problem? Did you overcome the setback or was hit back by the challenge? It is difficult to generalize the people who have opinions on the millennials because millennials have been the hot topic of discussion for the past decade or so. Commonly society picks a positive or negative view on millennials. A negative view that copious amounts of people have on millennials is that we are lazy, entitled, selfish and shallow. Another views are that is relatively positive is that we are just confident, self-expressive, liberal and upbeat. There is a bountiful amount of data to defend either side of this issue. The population usually chooses between these two perspectives or they just remaining neutral with no opinion. However, I believe that millennials are important because they are the one’s who hold the content of future.
Like the definition of resilience, and the process of resilience itself, the manifestation of resilience is multidimensional and complex. A simple response is that resilience is a favorable or good outcome, despite serious threats to adaptation and development (Windle, 2011). This may mean happiness, physical health, emotional wellbeing, and life satisfaction (Lavafor, 2008). But, more often, it is ability to continue to function, despite obstacles. To adapt both internally and externally to and show competency in the self and one's environment in a developmentally appropriate way (Masten, Herbers, Cutuli, & Reed, 2009; Lafavor, 2008). Windle (2011) states that resilience is not the absence of distress because risks and stressors are a part of development. The corporate environment highly impacts today's millennials as there is no aid to build one’s confidence. Prior to entering a job, millennials have a lower self-esteem, can’t cope with stress and are impatient.
