How does your resilience impact your ability to think and act ethically? Peers, subordinates, and superiors influence and guidance can greatly vary the way we react or handle different situations. I do believe that personal resilience is not only built on your values and upbringing, but is influenced by the people you work with and interact with on a daily basis. I also believe that your level of resilience can vary greatly by the situation. I think the number of people in the situation can easily sway your views or lower your personal resilience. In a large group, one does not want to be the outsider if your particular personality lends itself to it. On the other hand, you may be the type that enjoys being the devils’ advocate. Either
way is not necessarily better than the other is, just different. My level of resilience definitely affects my ability to think and act ethically. To a certain degree, I think anyone who says it does not, is not truthfully assessing themselves. I am not saying I am unethical or unfair, but what I am saying is that each of us has a certain level of resiliency in what we are willing to accept. In certain situations, we have a threshold of what we let go and what we will speak up for and question. Off color jokes are a good example of what may be someone’s threshold of resiliency. Depending upon what group of people you are around has great influence on your acceptable level of garbage in a joke. It may be completely accepted in one group and unacceptable in another. I believe you may have to adjust your level of resilience based on the situation at hand. I believe we all carry some sort of biases and unethical thinking. We would not be human if we did not. However, we all have a choice on what we say and how we act when we are outside of our personal bubble. I may be completely off target, but that is how I interpret this question and how I think it should be answered. 2 cents
Critical Response: Given the three possible responses from the book, I feel like #2 is the most ethical of the three. However, I feel like all three aren’t satisfactory ways to treat this situation. I will analyze them one by one, then give my opinion of what the salesperson should do.
Everyday, we go through situations and experiences that affect us in some way, perhaps even change us. Different situations have different effects. The Ins and Outs of Ethics is a Business Week Online magazine article from May 13, 2001, it was written by Eric Wahlgren. In the article he interviews Michael Rion, the author of The Responsible Manager. Rion is also a leading business ethics advisor who consults many Standard and Poor’s 500 companies. In the article Wahlgren asks Rion why it is important for businesses to have a high ethical standard. In his responses, Rion explains that effective organizations utilize ethics programs to clearly define ethical expectations, resolve ethical issues quickly, and to remove moral constraints. Additionally, employees who understand how to deal with ethical dilemmas will also be more productive and have strong core values to guide them. According to scripture, Rions concepts are biblically sound, relevant, and desirable, proving that ethical organizational behavior is shaped and influenced by sound ethical principles.
n this reflective journal entry, we are going to look at that the ethical issues that were presented in the Ethics Game simulations, the decision-making steps that were completed to address ethically the issues, and the ethical lenses that I used to make decisions throughout the simulation. For me, self-management has always been rather easy, as I am fiercely independent and would rather be left alone to manage myself than work under someone else. However, the toughest part of this particular domain for me is accepting my own failures or mistakes. While I loved learning to be more independent when it comes to school and working when I started my BSW, I also think I became harder on myself when I did not get the right grade, or the right field placement. Being a Jamaican, culturally, it is the expectation for individuals to bounce back readily after experiencing disappointments, disasters, or any unwanted predicament. For instance, it is the norm for individuals to work on repairing damaged roofs or areas on their homes shortly after the passing of a hurricane. It is also expected that you minimize complaints and instead focus your energy on moving forward.
