Frontiers of an Arab Woman “When you spend a whole day among the trees, waking up with walls as horizons becomes unbearable (Mernissi, 59).” One would assume that in the face of woman’s liberation-access to an equal and higher education, choice of a husband and access to a prosperous/independent future-that a woman would be positioned to escape gender oppression. However, this is not the case for the Arab women of Fatima Mernissi’s Dreams of Trespass and Ahdaf Soueif’s In the Eye of the Sun. The two main characters of these novels-Asya and Mernissi herself-enable the reader to understand how gender inequality is rooted in the frontiers and accepted social norms that are defined by the community and adhered to by the individual. Although these woman have access to an equal education with the hopes of becoming an enlightened, liberated women, education does not guarantee that they will ever become truly liberated. This paper will discuss the differences between the educated and seemingly liberated women of Dreams of Trespass, and In the Eye of the Sun, in hopes to understand whether cultural and educational frontiers are the only characteristics which govern a woman's right to escape the gendered Arab hierarchy. Why do some women, with access to westernization and an equal education still fall victim to the subservient expectations of an unliberated and uneducated female in the Arab world? Why are these women maintaining such domination when they are surrounded by tools of liberation? What are the causes of such oppression? The maintained traditional frontiers that continue to define gender roles in these stories, Islamic traditional values, familial expectations? Using the frontiers that guide the lives of Fatima Mernissi and Asya, we will seek to understand the causes of the differences between the two characters--one woman is liberated, the other, for most of her life, remains oppressed-- when both are from progressive, wealthy and educated families. Although both Fatima and Asya grew up in privileged families, these two women evolve into very different characters--one oppressed the other liberated. Asya and Fatima were surrounded by very different frontiers (see pg 2), which ultimately led to the development of two very different women. Fatima was raised within the rigid confines of a walled city harem, but emerges a strong woman that is left unscathed by her oppressive childhood. As a child she was surrounded by strong feminist role models, who lived in the harem with her, that taught her to maintain dreams of trespass because they eventually would set her free.
The Korean War , although successful in preventing the spread of communism, was one of the first tests of communism in Asia. North Korea was strictly communist while South Korea was democratic. As usual, the United States supported democratic South Korea and the Truman Doctrine was applied to the Korean situation. Once the North Korean forces were defeated at Inchon, they eventually got pushed back to the 38th parallel. However, against President Truman’s word, American General MacArthur decided to keep pushing back the North Korean forces by crossing the dividing line. Japan was imperializing late nineteenth century to early twentieth century. Korea was a Japanese colony. After World War II, the Japanese had to get rid of the colony. North Korea became Communist. South Korea wanted to be democratic. Later North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and entered South Korea. The United States answered by telling the United Nations to help South Korea. The United Nations did and they pushed North Korea so far back they hit the northern tip of china. China went into the war to protect their borders. At the end of the war they went back to where they were in the beginning. Neither side won. Between 1992 -1995 North Korea did many good things. It is precisely this point, which proves the argument of this paper. The well intentioned attempt of Western feminist to write a feminist book in order to help, both women in the East in an exchange of ideas and stimulation of still more ideas and women in the West in providing knowledge with which to further aid the women of the East. On both counts it fails. In the West it gives further ground to the false generalizations and assumptions of women in the Muslim and more generally the developing world who are seen as oppressed and in need of “liberation” while in the East it serves to colonize and dehumanize the women. These good intentions did not create what can be construed as a positive contribution.
Lila Abu-Lughod’s article titled, “Do Muslim Women Really Need Saving?” takes a closer look at the problematic ethnocentric approach many have when trying to gain an understanding of another culture that may be foreign to that individual. In this analytical paper, Lughod looks at women in Islam, specifically the treatment of women and how it might be utilized as a justification for invading into a country and liberating its people. The country Lughod refers to in her article is Afghanistan, and Lughod points out the misunderstanding from the people to the Bush administration like First Lady Laura Bush who believed that intervention was necessary to free women from the captivity of their own homes. It is important to consider the role that different lenses play into all of this, especially when one’s lenses are being shaped by the media. Depictions of covered women secluded from society leave a permanent image in the minds of many, who would then later support the idea of liberation. This paper will discuss that the practice of using propaganda when referring to the lifestyle in the Middle East is not exclusive to the U.S; rather it has been utilized throughout history. Additionally, we will take a closer look on the importance of symbols, such as veils in this case; help to further emphasize the cause to liberate. Finally, we will analyze Lughod’s plea towards cultural relativism and away from liberal imperialism.

The Arab woman, is there really a clear cut, precisely defined profile of what characterizes a woman of Arabia? Barren sand dunes, nomadic tribes of cloaked men, wearing turbans, mounted on camels, wielding swords, and their weak woman folk to whom they dictate. This is a classic Hollywood image of the Arab’s of the Middle East. The helpless female who is subjected to the will of her militant husband or aggressive father is nothing new to the average person of the present time, where being dutiful and being tyrannized can easily have the same definition in Hollywood and American media. However inaccurate this may be for the entire of the Arab world, it is the societal norm to classify woman as the victim of their male macho society. On the contrary, there is no ‘one size fits all’ description for women coming from the many countries that make up the diverse region of the Middle East. In each country, in each region, in every city, town or village, each woman has her own story, personality, heart and mind; quite opposite from what American media would have one believe. In such as the women of the novels, A Balcony Over Fakihani, Pillars of Salt, and A Woman of Five Seasons, their roles as women, wives, mothers, and daughters portray something other than the Hollywood’s forever destined victim of the males figures in their lives.

In our Women and Politics in the Middle East class this semester we watched three films that brought to surface social issues faced by women in the Middle East. Caramel, Divorce Iranian Style and Persepolis are films that speak of issues of taboo that are critical for women in the Middle East. The themes that connect all three films are social issues, female identity, and politics that are aimed against women’s rights. In all three films the protagonists are women who struggle with the government and society to get their rights in their own countries. Even though one film is a documentary and one film is a comedy/drama and the last one is a cartoon, all three of the films are similar in their themes and struggles. All three films show critical issues that women face in the Middle East on a daily bases.
In today’s society, the most popular electronic device is cell phones. From the 1940’s to 2011, cell phones have come a long way, from its capability to help individuals to keep in touch with friends and loved ones from near and far. Now and days we use them to text, im (instant message) a person, browse the internet, take pictures, email, and even transfer data. It’s amazing how far we have gotten with a device as such, fulfilling majority of our everyday needs. But can it also be putting user’s lives in a high risk of danger? There have been many issues linking cell phones to cancer, tumors, death, depression, and much more. Cell phones can produce radiation that can affect our bodies from infants to 65+. From my perspective, cell phone’s may help society communicate with others, but is truly not worth the danger that it is leading us into. Cell phones are just not safe.
Cell phones are actually a health hazard to us. Cell phones use Radio Frequency waves in order to transmit signals to and from. The radio frequency signals from cell phones fall within the microwave part of the electromagnetic spectrum. These waves are responsible for heating effects, thus holding a phone to our ear for quite some time, you will notice that your phone is warm. Rong Wang, from Pong case explains, “When the phone is placed next to your head during a call, a significant proportion of the emitted energy is absorbed into your head and body.” A compelling instance of health hazards as one of the disadvantages of cell phones was an experiment performed by Swedish Researchers where they studied the effects of exposure to microwave radiations for two hours on rats’ brains. They found that a large number of dead brain cells were found in the rats’ brains after 50 days. Degeneration of brain cells in humans leads to serious diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. Although the linkage of mobile phone usage and Alheimer’s and cancer aren’t completely established, a truth in these findings has major ramifications. Mobile phone usage in USA has gone up from 13 million mobile phone subscribers in 1993 to 223 million in 2006, almost twenty times in thirteen years.
