“Four-Day School Week”
Maddie Lowe First Hour English
Have you ever felt like weekends go by too fast? Do you become tired of going to school five times a week?School can be exhausting and it often seems as though it is not worth the trouble. This is especially true when school is dragged on for five days at a time with only small breaks in between the next school week. Although a four-day school week may not sound appealing, students and teachers at Sturgis Williams Middle School could greatly benefit from it. To begin with, students have more time in class. Since there is more time, students can finish homework and other assignments during school hours. After a long day of work and assignments, I feel that coming home and doing more
79% of American middle school and high school students take part regularly in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Many students participate in sports that can take up to 4 hours of their time, daily. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school students will be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste.
Just the existence of an extra free day allows students to get more homework done and have more time. For example, if you have a project that takes at least three days to complete, and you were absent one day, this will give you extended time to finish your project. My next point coincides with my first one; that having an extra day without school “stretches” work time. This means that students will have more time to do a project or homework, which means that students won’t feel as pressured, which means that the quality of the homework is much higher. My next point also coincides with the previous point; that students won’t feel as pressured and worried as a two day weekend.
Students now have the opportunity to work another day to save for their future. The four-day school week also provides much more time for these children to spend and enjoy time with friends, and family, as well as enjoying extracurricular activities. There is a lovely environment for the children at the school and an extra day for the instructors to gain knowledge and a better understanding of their curriculum. The schools will be saving a varying amount of money that could be used in case of an emergency with money of any kind. Whether it is an emergency funding program, or money to fund an extracurricular activity. In conclusion, the four-day school week has proven itself to be a very effective form of education that Colby Public Schools most certainly should switch to within the coming
Students may need to nap to compensate for energy expended throughout the day. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, allowing for a larger window of time to spend with their families after school, even with a later start time. Another opposing argument is that students would have less time to participate in extracurricular activities. However, this issue can be resolved by making practices for sports and club meetings shorter and more frequent to accommodate the schedule variation. Overall, the benefits of later start times far outweigh the drawbacks.
The other reason why we shouldn’t have a four school week is because students will have more time to get into trouble more.Half of high school and middle school students will get into drugs and crimes because they are unsupervised for a long time.If students get into crime and drugs at a young age they probably wouldn’t be able to get a job. Some of the students wouldn’t know it’s bad for them. The reason why is because some of the students don’t know it’s bad is because their parents or teachers haven’t told them about why it is bad.
Now days, normal American students go to school 5 days in a week. However, some places over the United States operate 4 days of school week system. Those school surprisingly observe positive changes. Therefore, American schools should operate 4 days of school week because schools can save their budget costs, and students can have more time to enjoy outdoor activities, pursue additional educational goals and improve academic achievement since students are in less stressful environment.
Todays students are busier than they have ever been in American history. Homework is a large contributor to this. The average student in America has approximately four hours of homework each night. If students start homework right when they get home from school, that gives them free time starting at 7:00 PM. The majority of students also have jobs. So. between school, work, homework, and practice, that leaves them virtually no time to be able to hang out with friends or to participate in family activities.
Overall, I stand by my argument of letting students out of school earlier. If they can not be let out earlier than they should at least get less homework so it can be done on time and efficiently. This will only benefit our students by helping them to focus more, making them happier, and creating a better future for generations to
If Springfield where to try this they would save money. The district would be saving money on food. You may be thinking will my child's grade suffer? No, Many schools have switched and grades were the same and students god better grades in math. Peach county and Georgia tried a four day school week and the only thing that happened was they saved money, test scores went up, less absences, and a higher graduation rate.
Pushing back school hours helps a student get more sleep therefore doing better in school. Say a student just woke up and they're late to school, with little sleep. In their first class they have a test and because they’re tired paying attention is hard. “ new research suggests a letter high school starts have widespread benefits”(Hoofman 12). This study shows that research has been done showing us we
School should be four days a week with an extra hour added to each school day because it would save money for the school system, increase student motivation, stimulate the economy, and promote student achievement. There has been a decrease in education due to the small amount of resources, causing classrooms to be bigger and children not being able to extend their knowledge. Even though the economy has been falling, each school district has been working hard to promote student education, which could mean trading a traditional school schedule for a four-day school week. Replacing a normal school schedule for the four day school week can raise the school budget tremendously. (Hart, Demand Media).
(O’Neil). The students don’t want to give up their video game time at night so they stay up late, but they have to get up early to go to school. They are tired and they won’t pay attention to their teacher, so they can’t learn. School starting later will enhance students
In the United States, most school days are 5 days per week, with the weekends being breaks. This has been the normal format for quite some time now. But have you ever wondered what would happen if there were 4 days of school per week, and the benefits it has to students' overall health? 4 day weeks for schools have shown much improvement in the school environment and could also be a solution to the burnout and mental health problem that has been rising in our generation. Schools should switch the 5 school day format to 4 days a week because it is energy saving and improves children's mental health. Almost 900 school districts have adopted this new format in the United States.
If school days were shorter students would have more time to sleep. “According to WebMD children between ages children between ages 12 and 18 need at least eight hours of sleep” (ehow.com). Between the long six to seven hours spent at school, homework, extra-curricular activities and sports very few students get the amount of sleep that they need. If students aren’t getting enough sleep it’s going to be hard for students to concentrate at school the next day. Lack of sleep can contribute to obesity, depression, car accidents and lower quality of life (theatlantic.com). If school days were shorter by even just an hour, students would have an extra hour to sleep.
Also it helps kids have a better understanding of what they did at school that day. Recent studies, show that kids that do homework have a better understanding of what they did at school. Which can lower the work that teachers do everyday.
