Recommended: Sleep among teens
School days should be shorter because, students would be able to get enough sleep, there, there would be more time for students to do extra-curricular activities and students would be less stressed. If school days were shorter students would get just as much work done in less time.
If school days were shorter students would have more time to sleep. “According to WebMD children between ages children between ages 12 and 18 need at least eight hours of sleep” (ehow.com). Between the long six to seven hours spent at school, homework, extra-curricular activities and sports very few students get the amount of sleep that they need. If students aren’t getting enough sleep it’s going to be hard for students to concentrate at school the next day. Lack of sleep can contribute to obesity, depression, car accidents and lower quality of life (theatlantic.com). If school days were shorter by even just an hour, students would have an extra hour to sleep.

students didn’t have to spend as many hours in school, they would have more time for sports and extra-curricular activities. Sports and extra-curricular activities are an important part in student’s lives. Due to long days at school and excessive amounts of homework, students are sometimes forced to skip their practices. Some kids aren’t able to do any sports or activities because they don’t have enough time between school, homework and sleep. These activities can teach responsibility (ehow.com) and children wouldn’t be the same without them. It is truly a shame that students actually believe that they don’t have time for things they enjoy because school and homework leaves them with no free time. These days, students feel extremely stressed out.
If school days were shorter students wouldn’t feel as stressed. A lot of students need to spend a great amount of time studying independently. In a lot of classes there is time where students aren’t doing anything because the teacher is done teaching their lesson. If each class was a few minutes shorter students would have more time that they could use towards studying subjects that they are unsure about. This would make them less stressed because they could be more confident that they know all of their subjects well. Huffington post says “by shortening the school days, students wouldn’t be as distressed about going to school and their grades would be higher” (huffingtonpost.com).
In conclusion school days should be shortened. It would reduce stress, give students more time for sleep, extra-curricular activities and sports. Schools need to make their school days shorter as soon as possible for the well being of
students.
Also, students will be up later finishing homework and socializing on their phones with friends. Although schools will now have been adjusted to fit with students sleep cycles, that does not mean that the students will actually get more sleep. Also, people do not think of the consequences such as conflicts with transportation.
Students may need to nap to compensate for energy expended throughout the day. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, allowing for a larger window of time to spend with their families after school, even with a later start time. Another opposing argument is that students would have less time to participate in extracurricular activities. However, this issue can be resolved by making practices for sports and club meetings shorter and more frequent to accommodate the schedule variation. Overall, the benefits of later start times far outweigh the drawbacks.
Relaxation could improve a students ability to think and therefore enhance their chance of excelling at their academics. According to an Indiana school,"Having one weekday off of school each week allows more flexibility for teachers and students." Students have an extra day to make sure that they do all their studies and still get extra time to do extra curricular activities. This also prevents homework and studying excuses students might make as a result of lack of time and abundant amount of homework. A five day week of school gives students a hard time as they have to adjust both activities and studies in 2 days. As a result of a five day school week students get less time to spend with their families, but with a four day school week they could spend more with family and still have everything finished and be prepared. Concluding from these chain of events, an implementation of a four day school week will result in a students academic growth.
School should be four days a week with an extra hour added to each school day because it would save money for the school system, increase student motivation, stimulate the economy, and promote student achievement. There has been a decrease in education due to the small amount of resources, causing classrooms to be bigger and children not being able to extend their knowledge. Even though the economy has been falling, each school district has been working hard to promote student education, which could mean trading a traditional school schedule for a four-day school week. Replacing a normal school schedule for the four day school week can raise the school budget tremendously. (Hart, Demand Media).
Don't you hate waking up early for school in the morning? Most high school students wake up before the sun rises just to become ready for school. Teenage brains do not begin to function that early considering many are tired from staying up late the previous night. The National Sleep Foundation reported that most teens do not retain enough shuteye, one study found that only 15% reported sleeping eight 1/2 hours on school nights. That fact was extremely true for me when I attended high school. I barely was able to wake up, get dressed, and be in school on time since I was so tired. In my opinion school days should start later, precisely in between 9- 10 o'clock. If the school day started later attendance would improve, students will be more prepared, and student's attitudes and grades may improve.
Schools are so much a part of our society, so the accurate length of school days is extremely important. Public opinions on the length of the school days are different. There are a lot of parents and professors concerned that it is hard for children to go to school early in the morning and stay there the whole day. On the other side, some professors try to force students into a nine hour school day. Not so many years ago, school was a main part of my life, and the school days’ structure and length affected my social life and ability to study. From my own experience and some studies that I have seen, students benefit if school days are long.
Extending the time of the day for school will definitely improve students and teachers in many different ways. There should be extra time added to school hours because it would really help students develop more information, Help students that are failing, and also it would have a great effect on teachers that are not able to teach a lesson in class in the usual time given. First and foremost, Students that are already highly educated can really open up to a whole different level of knowledge with more time in school. Adding time would be a great idea for students that have a hard time learning or students that need to know more. For example, in the usual time that we have in school which is approximately 5 to 6 hours a day.
Summer break should be longer because students can work more, spend time with family members, and students can rest their minds. If summer break were was longer, then students could work more and as long as they wanted to work. Students could get more money when working while on summer break. Students would like working on summer break to get money because they could buy more stuff with their money. Cause the students would have more money from working on their hole summer break.
A shorter school day could let you fit in extra after school activities , and the activities you want to do that take
Should school start at 7:00 or should it start later in the morning? In Douglas High School, start times are at 7:30 in the morning. Changing the school schedule to a later start time would result in many other changes affecting a lot of people. According to the Sleep Foundation, "The change will affect the entire community, from students and parents to businesses, libraries, police, youth sports clubs, bus drivers and many others." Altering the school schedule would influence numerous aspects of people’s lives. Highly coordinated routines would have to be changed and adapted to the new schedule. A later release time would take time off of students’ free time in the afternoon. Clubs, sports, jobs, and other after-school activities would have
Longer school days would leave students with not wanting to do anything that involves school. Students will start to slack off and their grades will suffer and they lose interest in school. Rachel Brooklyn a writer for Huffington Post says “By shortening the school days, students wouldn’t be as distressed about going to school and their grades would be higher. Fewer school hours per day would permit students to have enough time to study, complete school assignments, participate in after-school activities and be able to get to bed by a decent hour”.this is saying that students are stressed, and that after school with more students needing jobs to save up for collinge and after school sports that it becomes really stressful to go to
Have you ever wanted to have shorter school days? Well I have, I want shorter school-days because having practice earlier in the day will not be so tiring, there would be so much more free time to do other activities and there would also be more time to finish homework. These are the reasons why students at HHS should have shorter school days. Having shorter school days will help students succeed educationally.
Almost all students already have stress because of school, imagine what would happen if the school board extended school hours by an hour and a half. School is already stressful because of everything we already do. Yes, adding a hour to school can help many students perform better but I disagree adding an hour and a half to school because students will perform worse, students wouldn’t have enough time to do things after school and many students will not come to school. First of all, I disagree with adding more time to school because students will perform worse. Students will perform worse because they will be too tired for the end of the day.
In “Extending the School Day or School Year: A Systematic Review of Research” authors Erika Patall, Harris Cooper and Ashley Batts Allen argue reasons why the school year should be longer. The amount of time spent in school directly effects how well students do in school. According to the authors study “Adding time to the school year or school day is at the top of the list of measures that have been hypothesized to improve achievement among U.S. Students”(401). The main reason why the authors believe that the school year should be extended is because there are now more things being taught to students and the extra time is needed in order to academically succeed. The authors state that years ago school years and days were both shorter because children us...
The students that play sports will never have time to sleep. If school hours were extended, it would take away sleep from many students it would be a complete waste of time. The ones that participate in any after school activity would be tired and restless everyday at school, after school activities would not be able to happen if the school board extended the school days. Eventually, the students would become tired and sick of having to get up and loose hours of sleep to go to school for nearly 10 hours a day. Also, it would not only cause students to loose sleep, it is also unhealthy for kids to run restless all day, extending the school days would solve no problems, it would only make them worse, kids would be falling asleep in class and not paying attention to the teacher’s instruction on what they need to do.
