Flame Post Lab

In my team’s investigation, we were trying to figure out four unknown powders based on the known powders we had. Our research question was, how do different chemicals change the color of the flame. First in the experiment, we prepared our lab space by making sure we had a clear countertop and had a beaker full of water ready for the hot splint to be dumped into. We all put our hair back and put our goggles on and then proceeded to turn the Bunsen burner on. After we put the Bunsen burner on, Mr. Young adjusted our flame and we sent someone to grab the first chemical to burn. We burnt chemicals on the wooden splint one after one observing the color the flame produced, recording the color, and proceeded to put the splint in the water afterwards. …show more content…

The only reason this is true is since every chemical has a diverse atomic structure and has a unique amount of photons in each one. The photons are what cause the neon lights to emit particular colors, since the amount of energy they carry and emit, based on our lab, there is probably another chemical mixed with neon to create various colors in a neon sign.
A model is a visual representation that demonstrates a theory. Models are important since scientists often make models to represent something the naked eye cannot see. For example, Neil Bohr made a model of an atom to demonstrate his idea of what an atomic structure ideally looks like. In his model specifically, he demonstrates how electrons can jump levels, obviously nobody can see an atom or can see electrons jump energy levels, however the model helps prove his theory since it is based on the evidence he has collected. Erwin Schrodinger was able to mathematically calculate the probability of electrons being in certain areas around an atom. Without his electromagnetic radiation model, his theory sounds silly and sounds like it is not true, but his model and evidence has proven his theory. All in all, models help prove theories that scientists form based on the evidence they have
