Family Genogram According to Tom’s genogram, there are no serious indicators of familial physical or mental illness. The only possible indicator would be his paternal great grandmother who committed suicide, but there was not enough information to know the cause behind her suicide since it was a family secret until recently. Tom’s maternal grandfather and siblings were shown to all be formerly or currently smoking. Tom does not currently smoke but about a year ago he mentioned he would smoke socially. With both paternal grandfathers currently diagnosed with cancer, Tom shared some concern of that he may have a predisposition for cancer. This indicates that he did not have a severe or moderate level of anxiety and he would not likely need to seek professional mental health services. When asked about the discrepancy between this score and the score of the Holmes-Scale Social Readjustment Scale, Tom stated that the symptoms he experiences were mostly physical and mostly just shaking hands and/ or an increased heart rate. He also mentioned that the day of the intake had been stressful and since then, he was feeling much less anxious because he had finished moving out of his former apartment. This may be a safe place for Tom to begin to explore and express himself emotionally, and this in turn may help him feel more confident with his personal identity. Tom may also be able to gain better insight into the initial cause or causes of his anxiety, since this have been something he struggles with and has struggled with for the majority of his life. Tom will most like benefit from taking a more comprehensive anxiety screening assessment, like the MMPI-2, which assesses anxiety, fear, obsessiveness, low self-esteem, health concerns, social discomfort, family problems, work interference, etc(Whiston, 2013, p. 217). Tom may also benefit from some type of stress-reduction practices and learning to cope with conflict. Conflict resolution may be an important psychoeducational topic for Tom. It seems as though Tom is either working or spending time with family members. Tom might benefit from finding a more balanced schedule of work and family responsibilities and of taking leisure time for self care. Tom might be able to discover self care strategies that are not time consuming and help reduce stress, since he is dealing with many different stressful life events.
