Subject: Fall Semester Update Professional Conduct Memo (09/13/2017)
The following memo is to provide an update on my progress to improve my professional conduct as a second-year doctoral student. I have made improvements in my time management and communication; however, there remain specific areas for improvement, particularly in responsive and pro-active communication.
Setting Priorities, Goals, and a Time Management
Balancing my priorities by using an organized system has significantly helped me to manage my course work and assistantship goals and be able to include time for my training goals. The most impactful activity has been setting up a monthly, weekly, and daily calendar that covered the entire term with an outline of all major course assignments and assistantship projects with a clear timeline to complete all requirements. Unlike previous semesters, I felt more at ease during the final couple weeks of the semester compared to my peers. This semester, I will continue to commit Thursdays and Fridays to research assistantship work only. Structuring my time this way has really helped me to focus on specific assignments: I feel more effective when I can dedicate an entire day to one project, paper, or task. Though simple, writing everything down and keeping track of my time has facilitated effective prioritization of my time to achieving my goals.

During the final two to three weeks of the semester, I struggled with balancing my time between course assignments and research assistantship work. I was unable to complete 20 hours per week of research support with Dr. Benenson but I was able to complete an extra 10 hours or more per week after all my course work was submitted to make up this
As a new nurse that was approaching my first anniversary of employment, I made the very tough decision to return to school to obtain my BSN. I began the RN-BSN program with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) in August of 2015. My life was already very busy, along with having two children, a husband, and reentering the workforce in a new field, I decided that taking one course at a time would work best for my busy schedule. My focus was to take as many classes as possible, without breaks by following the start dates with the UTA program. There were pre-requisite classes from other schools that I overlapped with the RN-BSN classes because I wanted to complete the program as quickly as possible.

After over 15 years of working as a CNA and Caregiver, I decided that I wanted to continue my education in the medical field. In 2013 I took the first step towards gaining a better future with more experience as a medical professional. I enrolled into a Medical Assistant program at IBMC college of Longmont. It has been a long road and I am almost to the finish line having gained essential skills needed to move further into my career. During my first semester I have been faced with many challenges. It has been an uphill battle with time management, nutrition, optimism, and stress. It is because of the aforementioned statements that I believe the application of my time management skills in college will allow me to successfully contribute not only to the academic environment of East Carolina University but the overall social climate of the campus as well. However, one trait that is arguably more important to academic success than time management is perseverance. Perseverance and curiosity were key to my academic success in high school and I plan to carry these traits that I have attained, along with many others, to East Carolina University as I continue my academic career. Time, the most valuable thing humans own, managing it, no easy task especially to a young undeveloped mind of a teenager, but efficiently managing time is a whole different task in itself. Students take part in extracurriculars and sports in which adding a responsibility to their schedule, but a successful student can handle the responsibilities of playing a sport. Additionally, a large part of being a highly effective student is knowing how to efficiently complete assignments, first by planning out a certain day or if the assignment is due the next day than planning out a time during the day where they complete the assignment. Another large part is completing projects and research papers, planning their schedule to complete such tedious and rigorous assignments over a certain amount of days and not just procrastinating. Working with others, an area that many do not consider a necessary skill, where working with others and collaborating is a huge part of adult life. When students can balance their extracurricular activities, plan out tedious assignments and follow through with their agenda, and work well with others and assess their time as well is all a culmination of what effective students have a skill
Learning that having good time management skills has shown me that I can take my time and accomplish more. When relating this to school, I can honestly say that starting early is the best gift that I can give myself. As a full-time student with a family and a full-time job, my time is a limited resource (Britton & Tesser, 1991 pg.405). When I start early on an assignment, I don't have to rush and if I mess up, I can start over or seek help if necessary. My work schedule doesn’t always agree with my school schedule but for the most part, I try to have all of my school work completed by Thursday. As I'm approaching the last week in this class, I have began to look over the discussion posts first and then I look over the complete section to familiarize myself with the material before I even go to the read section (Chambers, 2015 pg.4). I found that to be especially helpful when I first began this class because the things that I already knew or felt like I knew, I went ahead and did it.
On any given day, my time regardless of how planned it is by making lists can be thrown off track due to usually a sick child/pet. No matter how hard I try, I know my kids will get sick and they will expect me to take care of. Managing my time has always been somewhat of a challenge to me, but my goal is to perfect using time management skills in my day to day life. As a recent college enrollee, I now fit into a group of people called the “nontraditional student”. In this paper, I will share why I have chosen this topic, the term “nontraditional student” will be defined and characteristics of them will be given. We will briefly look at challenges the nontraditional student may face, and we will explore how nontraditional students use time management to balance family, life, work and school. It will also be shared as to how I may use the time management skills listed in the article personally.
In this report, I will reflect on my professional development throughout this module, from when I started in September, to now. According to Beausaert et al. (2011), ‘the art of self-evaluation is an integral element of reflection and involves critical insight into understanding one 's strengths and limitations’. Therefore, my aim is to identify my learning needs and to recognise my personal skills and capabilities, as well as identifying areas of my skill set that need to be refreshed or extended to stand out in the competitive job market. By doing this, I hope to demonstrate knowledge of the skills that I have gained during this module.
When it comes to our personal and professional lives, Managing your time efficiently should be a mastered ability. As a student, this could have a huge effect on performance and grades. Seeing that Time Management is imperative when it comes to college and success, recognizing bad habits, should be one of the first obstructions immediately eliminated from your daily schedule. Create new habits if you tend to procrastinate and start planning ahead to manage your most important priorities. According to David Allen (2001),"Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" (p.59) "changes in the way you clarify and organize all things that command your attention-could represent a significant shift in how you approach some key aspects of your day to day work." Setting up deadlines and completing your assignments a few days before the due date will eliminate the procrastination stage. Creating a list with the most important priorities first, will help sort out your assignments and eliminate stress and feeling overwhelmed.
I work in the day and attend school in the evening so it is critical for me to know how to manage my time effecteively. However my workload at work had became extremely unpredictable and with the weekly assignments for the FOUN1019 course it was very difficult for me to manage my time. I usually create a list of task I have to complete with the date it needs to be completed, then work on them individually to meet the due date. I realised this alone was not a very effective method for completing my assignment or managing time because I did not consider the preparation some of the task required. I then decided to approach my task differently to ensure that I was able to complete the weekly FOUN1019 assignment as well as other course work and the meet my deliverables at work. I kept making my list but I broke my task down into smaller task and allocate a time slot for finishing it eg. FOUN1019 Essay Outline would have several subtask: write introductory paragraph, write first body paragraph, write sentence outline for remaining body paragraphy and draft essay outline. I found this method to helped me to accomplish more task because I was more resoureful with my
