When I made the decision to return to college to complete a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW) I looked at many universities. I needed a university that was going to work with me not against me with the challenges of my already crazy life. Three challenges that I know I will be presented with during my time in school will be time management, distractions and support. Challenge One: Time Management On any given day, my time regardless of how planned it is by making lists can be thrown off track due to usually a sick child/pet. No matter how hard I try, I know my kids will get sick and they will expect me to take care of. Since I cannot usually control when that will happen, it’s important that I take advantage of what I can control, such looking ahead at assignments that will need my attention to plan adequate time to complete assignments a head of time, instead of waiting till the last minute. When I know what to expect I can make plans. Another …show more content…
Instead of being happy or proud that I want to be a best person I can be, which I feel is to earn a degree. They feel it is selfish and that I am abandoning responsibilities at home, however my husband and children feel the complete opposite and thankfully are extremely supportive. How I plan to deal with this challenge is simply by ignoring their rude comments and look the other way. I can’t change their thoughts or feelings regarding the choice I have made, but I can control my reaction, which is to show my children kindness always wins. When they have a problem with another child not being kind to them, they will tell that child that they will pray for them, which we do. That will be the kindness I show to those negative people. I will pray that God shows them my heart is working towards something that he wants. Something that is bigger than I am and will one day hopefully understand why he has guided on this
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
Theses quotes might be said once or many times in one’s teen life. Complaining about parents is one of the conversation topics among the peers. Sometimes teens feel like adults do not aware of their opinions anymore. Moreover, arguments among the family could ruin the relationship if members do not know how to deal with it. I learned how to solve problems through these conflicts and became more mature.
In recent discussions of education, a controversial issue has been whether or not to go to college after high school. On the one hand, some argue that starting your career after high school is the smart thing to do. On the other hand, however, others argue that the smarter decision would be to continue your schooling by going to college to get a degree. In sum, then, the issue is whether or not college is the right decision for you. My own view is that you should go to college because it helps you build character, start a tradition, and gives you experience.
Scheduling and planning are necessary to be successful as a working student. Setting time aside for school assignments is a priority, but it is also important to build in personal time for you, your family, and friends (Blais & Hayes, 2011). S...
I never would have thought I would go back to school. Especially at my age. Not that age should be a factor in doing anything. I guess I did not have enough self-confidence in myself. It could have been the environment I grew up in. One reason I had decided to go back was to help others. Another reason I enrolled in college was to gain more knowledge. And the third reason I enrolled was to have a better future. But one day, I woke up and made a promise to myself that I would never be in an abusive relationship. Well life doesn’t always go the way we plan it to go.
I have returned to college after being out of school for several years because, I am motivated to obtain my associates degree. I want to finish what I started years ago. When I was in high school, I became discouraged with my studies due to an illness and ended up dropping out of school. A few years after that I had an opportunity to return to school and obtain an Associate’s degree. When I started the program I was doing well until my illness returned. I found myself having a hard time juggling my school work, my illness and a job. I eventually started failing classes and ended up giving up again. At this point I had once again, let life’s challenges win the battle. Looking back, I understand that I failed when I returned to school because I wasn’t mentally prepared nor was I mature enough to deal with issues as they happened. Looking back at it now I understand that I made a terrible error permitting fear to take
Starting college is an intense and confusing event that plagues all recent high school graduates. It is like trying to run when all you can do is crawl, and for many freshmen, myself included, one can get easily overwhelmed by the daunting task of picking a major when less than two months ago some of our parents still packed our lunches for us every morning. The concept of entering college tends to be frequently skewed and expecting an eighteen year old to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives, without having them actually experiment in different areas, has the potential to create a generation of adults who are aggravated and depressed in their careers.
First, I cannot think of another historically black university that I would want to give credit for my educational successes. Since I attended a public white university in pursuing my undergraduate degree in social work, I have a strong desire to take advantage of the opportunity to pursue my graduate degree at your highly accredited historically black university. Second, I admire the passion put into the goals and objectives of your social work program. The goals of influencing the application of the Afrocentric perspective and humanistic values, which focus on a strengths-based approach to resolve complex social problems not only at the local level, but the regional, national, and international levels as well. This goal in itself encompasses my passion for influencing positive change in society and choosing the field of social work. These are only a few reasons as to why I would like to obtain my master’s degree in social work from Clark Atlanta University. Clark Atlanta would provide me with the direct advanced social work skills that I will need to be successful in the field of social
To begin I decided to make a to-do list or a planner of what things need to be done. Prioritizing from have to do it to would be great if I do it. Especially as a science major every time I decide to procrastinate meaning end up cramming the
All in or all out as well as for better or worse, for richer or poorer. Have you ever been married to a dream? Have you ever felt like something was incomplete in your life? I did in regards to college and college graduation. First I would like to earn my degree in business management for the purpose of advancing in my job. Secondly I would like to increase my knowledge of business Furthermore, I would like to accomplish what I started in relation to graduating college.
In these past few months, my life has been dramatically changed for the better. I have gone from hiding under a rock to sparking on fire for God 's sake. In all of these changes, there is not exactly one easy event that will influence my academic journey moving forward, but a whole series of God speaking to me that will guide my through it. To fully comprehend the Grace that has led me to knock on the door of college again, the experience can only be explained through a story. That being said, this story will begin around December of 2014 where I found myself missing a Christian summer camp I use to work at, and really wishing I could be a part of the conference I once loved so much. I began debating with myself (and a little bit of God when
Entering college, I heard a quote that said: “what you do in your twenty’s will determine the rest of your life.” After hearing it, I had to ensure that my entire college experience will be very beneficial for my future. When deciding on a major, I looked back in my life to see what skills I was proficient in and also discuss with adults on how they feel about the career they were positioned in at the time. After receiving the great feedback from people who are long in their career and reflecting on my life to figure out my passion, I decided to pursue the major in Mechanical Engineering Technology. I came to this conclusion by knowing I am very well with my hands, I love math, and I am always intrigued with new technology. My father also
When I first entered college I was an undecided new student who wasn’t exactly sure how I wanted my life to go. Once I started taking a couple of classes in the business, Marketing and social work fields I knew right away what my calling was. Just having that first intro to social work class my attention was hooked. I loved the classes and the experneices I learned about. I realized that my direction of college and a degree was to be accomplished in the social work setting. Being able to help those in need in Micro and Macro setting. Moving forward in the social work degree I soon realized that I was fully comminted to this major, knowing that one day I could help those people and children in the worl warmed my heart. My sophomore and senior
What do we know about time management? As adults we should know a lot about time management. We all strive to become the best that we can be. This alone should encourage us to learn about time management. Every aspect of our lives depends on it. If we try to plan, organize, and execute our ideas most of the time we can manage it well, but when we go the other route, and jump out there feet first, most of the time we do not do as well. This is not the case in every light, but usually it is the norm. Even as we sit in class trying to better ourselves by improving on our education, we learn that we must manage time to the best of our abilities. This is not done only for school, but for our families for those of us that have children and spouses. A lot of the time, we manage to get everything done and leave ourselves out in the cold when it comes to making time for ourselves. If it is not our job or school we are trying to meet someone else's needs.
Everyone has their experience of entering a discourse community, such as attending high school, entering the company and joining organizations. Being a newcomer, we have to work hard so as to get accepted. In ENGL 1301, I have to write a composition on how I successfully joined a discourse community. Therefore, I am going to demonstrate my process of transiting to UTA and prove that I have successfully joined the UTA community in academic and social aspects. There were three problems I have faced when the school started: balancing study and entertainment (academic), different learning method from high school (academic) and overcoming loneliness (social). Transition to college life was not easy, I have changed my time management (ethos), learning method (logos) and attitude (pathos) to
