August 30th move in day here at Southern New Hampshire University, boy was I excited. I had spent weeks gathering my things and preparing for my big move into college. Once I had settled on that warm summer day I said goodbye to my parents and started my journey as a student at SNHU. I remember how I felt the first couple of weeks full of excitement to meet people and become part of the SNHU community. Although full of excitement I began to second-guess myself, I had felt very dissatisfied with my living situation for a great deal of the first semester. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to move into Washington with another student, which has been great. I find as I spend more time here at SNHU the more it feels like home. During my first semester I have been faced with many challenges. It has been an uphill battle with time management, nutrition, optimism, and stress. Fortunately for myself I happened to be very skilled in time management although it was tough, I was able to prioritize myself enough to focus on the most important thing, my education. On another note I have not easily managed my meals. I find myself going to bed hungry on certain days do to the large workload. However, as I have grown into this experience I have begun finding other ways to balance my studies and more wisely manage my …show more content…
time. Such as planning things out in advance so I can sufficiently meet dead lines, and refraining from multi tasking for I have learned multitasking is a negative when it comes to focusing. Although it may be announces at times my classes truly are giving me the tools to be successful. Throughout the semester I have been assigned many projects, one of my more extensive project is on Enterprise Holdings. This is a group project split up between myself and three of my piers. This project has taught me valuable skills such as business communication skills, problem solving and decision-making skills, and team collaboration skills. I learned more about business communication skills by analyzing and presenting a project on enterprise. Problem solving and decision-making skills were used when trying to schedule meeting times and to decipher the workload fairly. Something that I feel I lacked prior to a semester here at SNHU was my team collaboration skill. I have implemented them through out my semester long group project. I did this by working collaboratively and as sufficient as possible when we were all able to meet. We also incorporated collaborative tools such as the Group Me app, and Google drive. I am begging to realize in order to succeed in the business world it is imperative to obtain these qualities in order to work efficiently in complex and diverse environments. Another thing that has played a major role in my growth academically is my general education courses and my club involvement.
I am currently taking college composition as a general education course. I am also an acting member of the Bodybuilding Club, and a staff writer for the Penmen Press. These three things along have improved my writing skills immensely. Writing is something I have always struggled with. Fortunately I have access to such a great writing staff that can critique me as well as an extremely passionate teacher, Mr. Wilbert. Not to mention the vast amount of resources SNHU has to offer like the learning center and of course an amazing advising
staff. College classes aren’t just about learning material, classes like OL 125 (Human Relations), has given me skills that will last a lifetime. We have begun to dissect our individual personality types and the personality types around us. I have found this information extremely useful. Upon completing personality analyses like Myers Briggs, or The Big Five personality test. I realized many things about myself. I learned that I am an Extravert. Meaning I am assertive, friendly, and outgoing. I found I have great leadership qualities as well as self-efficiency. Sadly no one is perfect and we all have things we could work on. I found that I scored low on agreeableness. Leaving me a task. I must work on my cooperation, sympathy, and my team working skills. Human relations are the single most important class in order to better you as an individual and as a future businessman. Closing in on this semester I have given myself objectives to meet for next semester in order to improve approach on school and reach my academic goals. The first thing I am going to next semester is changing how I spend my days during the week. I have recorded what I have been doing day to day for an average week. This is how I have recognized why I have been struggling. Upon receiving my schedule I will also allow myself time to complete assignments and other tasks in between courses and over the weekend. I’ve recognized my biggest mistake this semester is not spending my time during the weekend wisely. I understand the importance of “work hard play hard” however; I have let my friends persuade me into going out on nights that I know I should be doing work in order to stay caught up with my assignments. These things will not happen next semester. I will most definitely go out and socialize among my piers, but I will not participate in such fun if my tasks and objectives have not been met. In addition I would like to work on myself. I will do this by building my resume, prioritizing myself around things of importance such as school and my family, and I would also like to secure an internship over the summer at HP Hood. From a business perspective I feel and internship with hood would aid my competencies in Corporate/Social responsibility, Global Orientation, and possibly even Innovative/Entrepreneurial Thinking. In lieu of my internship I will return to SNHU as a sophomore with real life business experience. Another benefit of an internship is it shows work ethic and some experience. Having this experience could in turn help my job search as I approach graduation giving me a leg up on most students. Everything I have done throughout my first semester as a freshman has shown me the importance of time management and good decision-making. This final assignment has given me an opportunity to come back next semester with a more effective approach. I hope that I have the opportunity to reflect on my second semester as well. I would like to strive to become a better student every semester, that way when I graduate I am confident in myself and employers are confident in my capabilities. Writing this reflection has supplied me another tool. Reflecting on myself, and my experiences throughout the semester has allowed me to reevaluate my decisions. I am now settled in to the college life style. I am confortable with my living situation as well as my future plans.
An HBCU is a college/university that embeds the nature of power and black excellence; a place with surroundings that doesn’t force you, but makes you want to push yourself to become a better person inside and out, and throughout the community. Transferring would allow myself to be put in an atmosphere of continuous motivation and growth that I would feed off of my superiors and the people around me.
The main component I look for in college is their commitment to further my studies. I feel this college will provide an ingenious culture within the science field, therefore rendering myself with the building blocks necessary to later pursue the medical field. Not only does UNCW devote itself towards their student’s undergraduate years, but also by providing Professional pathways such as Pre-Medicine, students such as myself can go into Professional schools better prepared. In addition to my interest in the academics the school has to offer, I also marvel at the amount of extracurricular activities available to the student body. Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Being able to write more freely, and the freedom to choose what subjects I would write over made the assignments more enjoyable and easier to
I was filled with excitement throughout the entire summer. I could not wait to get out of Scranton to expand my horizons. As the summer progressed, the excitement grew. When receiving the room assignments, I was shaking with nerves to see who I would be living with. I remember seeing their names and immediately forming a stereotype of them just by the looks of their name. A week before moving out, reality hit me like a gigantic rock. The feelings that were excitement were now anxiety. I was scared about leaving my safety zone. I knew many people in Scranton, and fit in well. I did not know anyone that was attending Penn State Harrisburg, I was alone for the first time in my life.
I was fortunate to attend two amazing institutions with incredible programs, Centralia College and Washington State University Vancouver. Centralia College provided me with an opportunity to demonstrate the strength of my skills through a six month research based project with the goal of improving training at the Writing Center. Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
While I wish finding my way around the school was my only problem, I was faced with some internal challenges. As the school year started, my friends slowly started to leave to these “big shot” colleges or simply move away to other community colleges. I, too, wanted the complete “college experience” somewhere in Arizona or across the country; yet I felt stuck and unaccomplished. I also felt jealousy which could have been because I did not get to decorate my dorm room.While talking about dedicating hard work to your education, Gina Rodriguez said “Just remember, during those times of fear and doubt, that you are right now discovering your true strength.” And in those times of doubt, I reminded myself why I could not just move and leave everything behind. The root of my challenges and concerns are my family. As I enrolled as a full time student, my family was fighting some financial problems which created marriage troubles for my parents. I could not leave at a time like this. I knew it was not the first time my parents were talking divorce but somehow I knew it was best to stay. I got financial aid from the school which saved me the fuss of asking my parents for money. It really meant so much to not put another worry on their
For me, being a college writer means writing well-organized essays that readers enjoy reading. Being a well rounded writer was also important. Each unit in this class challenged me to write in a well-organized, concise way. During each unit, we conducted some sort of revision activity where I was exposed to other students’ writing. As I read their work, I picked up on their use of transition words and separation of paragraphs to make the essay flow. Naturally, I began implementing more transition words in my own work and learned the appropriate ways to split paragraphs. The structure of the class was key to the organization of my ideas which was crucial to the development of my essay. During the third unit of this class, we were asked to identify an issue on campus, conduct research on the issue, and finally propose a solution to correct the issue. At first, it was difficult to get my ideas down and figure out what it was I would research. What I learned in class allowed me to first identify the issue I would research, write a rough draft, and hear what others had written before the final paper was due. This helped me to identify the main points, brainstorm and figure out what additional research I would need to find to support my argument. Being able to organize my thoughts from the beginning made writing the paper a much easier process. This course has helped me to grow as a writer and make
My first two weeks on campus were great. When I first walked on to the campus, it felt very foreign like I was in another country. I didn’t feel connected yet and still felt like a visitor. Most of the time I didn’t know exactly where I was going and of course, I didn’t want to look like a freshman. Eventually, I did find where I was going, after going to Cajun connection.
I decided to go back to pursue my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) mainly because I want to have a better career opportunity. This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. Also, in high school, we would have weeks to pick a topic, create a thesis, outline the paper, write the paper, and then revise the paper. In college, the time restraints are not quite as lenient. I?ve had to learn to manage my time and be more productive with what free moments I have. Strangely enough, I?ve found the college English experience to be much more rewarding and enjoyable than in high school.
Time management is another challenge, as a student and also a worker, you need to really know how to plan and manage your time in terms of studying, taking care of your family and schools with the assignments from school. Time, if not properly managed can bring about schedule conflict, both working and studying are time consuming but you need to set aside a particular for studying when all you do is mainly studying and nothing more. During this College Composition course, I came across numerous obstacles and educational involvements. Every factor of this course contributed to my overall learning experience. For starters, we often read out of our textbooks, “The Little Seagull Handbook” and “They Say I Say”. These books helped showcase proper writing techniques. In addition, we would have class discussions that everyone would participate in. This opened my eyes to different viewpoints that could influence my writing. I recall one class we had a debate over a topic and everyone had to choose a side to argue. Then when we wrote argument essays, even though they were on a different topic, it helped me view my topic in different ways. Lastly, the most helpful to my writing was peer review. We were told to read our paper out loud to our partner. Although personally I am quiet and dislike reading out loud, I found this very helpful. Instantly, my partner and I could find grammar mistakes that one may not pick up on while reading silently. Then we could also talk about other possible revisions for my paper. For every paper, we would have conferences with the professor. This was effective as well to have a professional giving corrections and ideas. When we would get back our graded rubrics on the assignments we completed, the instructor would leave comments to
