Critical Reading and Writing in the Discipline (FOUN1019) is a yearlong course designed to improve and develop students’ cognitive, analytical and rhetorical skills. It thereby provides students with the requisite skills to truly join the scholarly arena and become academic writers. I enrolled in the FOUN1019 course with the assumption that I would become more proficient in English Language and a more eloquent communicator. I anticipated that this course would be challenging like many other courses ascribe to a first degree in Marketing; however, nothing could have truly prepared me for the arduous work load that it entails. I work in the day and attend school in the evening so it is critical for me to know how to manage my time effecteively. However my workload at work had became extremely unpredictable and with the weekly assignments for the FOUN1019 course it was very difficult for me to manage my time. I usually create a list of task I have to complete with the date it needs to be completed, then work on them individually to meet the due date. I realised this alone was not a very effective method for completing my assignment or managing time because I did not consider the preparation some of the task required. I then decided to approach my task differently to ensure that I was able to complete the weekly FOUN1019 assignment as well as other course work and the meet my deliverables at work. I kept making my list but I broke my task down into smaller task and allocate a time slot for finishing it eg. FOUN1019 Essay Outline would have several subtask: write introductory paragraph, write first body paragraph, write sentence outline for remaining body paragraphy and draft essay outline. According to Dr. Bean’s class syllabus, the primary goal for this course is to, “help you develop the literacy skills you’ll need during your academic career”. In other words, this class was designed to teach students to write like professionals in an academic discourse community. Through several writing and research assignments, we acted as researchers on a quest to examine “how discourse—written, spoken, and digital—is shaped by social practice”. Although I felt I was a decent enough writer, I had doubts that I could accomplish such a tall order of directives. In the end, I found that I could do it, and I did it rather well, thus giving me the boost I needed to continue to move forward on my dream of obtaining a college degree.

Writing papers has been one of my biggest fears as a student. High school English class prepared me for the editing of my essays, for example, grammatical errors, spelling, font errors, and things that were under the category of fixing my paper. I realized that the writing process requires more than just editing, you have to understand that the paper is like a human body, it cannot function if every single part is not effective. I can certainly say that I have improved as a writer a great deal and this portfolio and the final revised drafts of my work certainly can argue for that. English 101 was certainly different from my other English classes; we actually focused on different parts of the writing process in each class instead of wasting our time discussing the same components of the process over and over again. As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I am aware that I have met very important requirements of writing that I feel were very valuable for me as a student and my writing has improved progressively.
There are many different definitions good writing can be defined as. However, good writing can be defined as having a purpose, being organized, as well as having an individual style. For any writing, a purpose is needed to reach the audience. The purpose is to deliver a strong message to an audience so they will comprehend the material. Organizational skills are necessary to thrive in writing. The writing must be organized in a way so everyone can comprehend what is being stated. Organizational skills can go hand in hand with using proper grammar which also makes the message clear. Some writing can be extremely boring, but what separates average from good is the individual flare that person has. In this time where we receive knowledge different then anytime before, the question of how we should interact with it should not be just raised, but emphasized on. In this new flat fast world that we get our knowledge through, critical literacy is a valuable tool and ability that should be recalled and available for all readers. More specific, it should be transferred by teachers to students in all educational environment. It is an important ability for students to have towards texts. And redefining texts to any devices or materials that we are getting the knowledge from, is the first step toward understanding critical literacy. Beside how critical literacy spreads the awareness of looking at texts in their social and cultural context, it is very significant to be negotiated in the very beginning of this interaction with knowledge, schooling and education. The substance of critical literacy is in its effects in empowering the readers, in our case the students, despite their different identities and differences. It educates them to recognize the power that hides behind all these different types of sources. Furthermore, critical literacy is very beneficial when we discuss essential issues such as, justice, power and freedom and their appearances in the classroom. Then, it becomes an integration that results in a precise concept, which is critical pedagogy. As an opening of these questions, what critical literacy could mean and especially its relationships with education and the teachers obligations of understanding and transferring it is what this paper look to indicate to.
This problem influences my academic and personal life because I cannot manage my time correctly in order to be successful. Firstly I am not organized and I don’t have any plan to set and apply. Looking at my own approach to time management I have noticed that I am well organised and good at prioritising tasks and jobs. When I log onto my computer to start my shift I am sent down numerous jobs, each job is different and has different deadlines for attendance and completion. I plan my day based around the date and time deadlines of the jobs and also the locations of the jobs. I then schedule the most effective order of completing the jobs, putting high priority jobs at the top of my list and grouping sites that are geographically close to each other. When it comes to our personal and professional lives, Managing your time efficiently should be a mastered ability. As a student, this could have a huge effect on performance and grades. Seeing that Time Management is imperative when it comes to college and success, recognizing bad habits, should be one of the first obstructions immediately eliminated from your daily schedule. Create new habits if you tend to procrastinate and start planning ahead to manage your most important priorities.
