Recommended: The negative effects of extending school hours
The school board is considering adding an hour and a half to the school day. So adding an hour and a half would, Interfere with parent's work schedule
. This would.Increase budgets and costs.
For these reasons, the school board should not extend the school day by one and a half hours.
The added hour and a half added to the school day will cost more, because the changes in time affect many different things it could be sports or some other after school activities. How you ask? Simply speaking, the time increase would force bus drivers to stay up later than they'd have to, for that reason they'd would have to be paid a higher wage . Same thing applies to teachers, they will all have to be paid more. At times, the higher budget costs
might downgrade the quality of the schools, therefore people are gonna have to be cut. With the extra hour and a half added to the school day, _students and teachers would be extremely drained and tired. For the students, there's a high probability that another class may be added, and said class may increase each individual student's workload. Afterwards, they'll be too unmotivated or unfocused to continue the work. So the bottom line is, the increased time would unintentionally increase stress, and would allow students and teachers to feel unmotivated. Extending the school day would Cause scheduling conflicts with family/community activities outside of school. For example, the changes in times wouldn't allow parents to do thing with their child that they normally would, as in picnics, going out to the park, and etc. Furthermore, They'll have to cut back on their extracirruclar activities, or their other hobbies and or routines. Finally, the parents couldn't see their children as often affecting the entire social order in the family. It is evident that extending the school day by an hour and a half would have negative effects for students, teachers, and families. There would be increased costs and budget cuts. Also,The teachers, and students shall be stressed and unmotivated to work. In conclusion, the school board should not move forward with adding extra time to the school day.
Students may need to nap to compensate for energy expended throughout the day. However, if schools were to start later, adolescents would not have to nap, allowing for a larger window of time to spend with their families after school, even with a later start time. Another opposing argument is that students would have less time to participate in extracurricular activities. However, this issue can be resolved by making practices for sports and club meetings shorter and more frequent to accommodate the schedule variation. Overall, the benefits of later start times far outweigh the drawbacks.
“BEEP, BEEP, BEEP!” The teenage student slams on the snooze button and struggles to get out of bed for the early school day. Teens on average need 9 ¼ hours of sleep (Backgrounder: Later School Start Times). Teens currently average fewer than 7 hours of sleep (Backgrounder: Later School Start Times). Hectic schedules, poor sleep habits, homework, and family obligations are the problem (Backgrounder: Later School Start Times). Schools are considering starting their school days later in the morning. For example, one Minneapolis school considered pushing back their start time from 7:15 to 8:30. Another Seattle school considers pushing back the school day start reported Jean Enersen. Would this benefit the students or harm the students? Is this for the better or for the worse? These are questions many superintendents and school board members are asking themselves. They all want to do what is best for their students, so the topic takes a lot of thinking, planning, and conversations. School starting later can be a very controversial issue.
Later School Start Times Everyone has always hated getting up super early to go to school. As children get older they move to different schools, from elementary to middle to high school, and the start times get earlier. In elementary school it was never a problem getting up but getting older, it always got harder to get up and the days were always longer. Schools start so early in the morning that it is hard to focus and students tend to miss more of their earlier classes and attend all of their later classes. Schools everywhere should start later because it would benefit the students and teachers.
One drawback to later start times is the fact that school would end later. Since schools that start later still have the same number of hours in a day, they would in turn end later in the afternoon. This can cause problems for after school activities, and also homework after school. Some students families depend on the money earned from working after school jobs. If the school they were attending got out later, they would have less time after school to work these jobs, so they would be unable to make the money they need to support their families (“Eight Major Obstacles to Delaying School Start Times”). In addition, any after school clubs or activities would end later after school, causing those involved to stay up later at
Imagine yourself as a student waiting in a long lunch line. When you finally sit down to enjoy your delicious meal, then the sound of the lunch bell rings and everyone departs to their next class. Every student in Conroe High School should be able to enjoy their meal without feeling rushed. Because of this, students believe it is a great idea to extend the lunch period. It will give students a longer time to eat, socialize, and it will give students a break from classes.
I say if we make school start an hour later, the bus issue could be fixed by making elementary school start 30 minutes later too. This would make sure that bus schedules would not interfere with each other, and would get home in time to watch their younger siblings. Extracurriculars would start only an hour or half hour later and would not make much
School should be four days a week with an extra hour added to each school day because it would save money for the school system, increase student motivation, stimulate the economy, and promote student achievement. There has been a decrease in education due to the small amount of resources, causing classrooms to be bigger and children not being able to extend their knowledge. Even though the economy has been falling, each school district has been working hard to promote student education, which could mean trading a traditional school schedule for a four-day school week. Replacing a normal school schedule for the four day school week can raise the school budget tremendously. (Hart, Demand Media).
A school schedule change will affect the traffic patterns, morning child care and work schedules for the parents and they don’t think schools should have that much power of communities. But the school start time will help kids in the morning because they will leave the same time there parents do when they leave to go to work and get to spend more time with their parents in the morning. Parents of athletes will also benefit because their kids game will be later and they won’t have to miss work to go see their kids play.
School days starting later would help improve student attendance by a lot! For example, a copious amount of students oversleep which results in lateness to school. However, if school started at least one to two hours later, then the students perhaps will not be late, and as a result, they can...
The dissenters say that school start times do not really affect the student’s behavior or their ability to learn. Studies show how wrong this believe truly is, the negative effects have shown in the numerous studies and polls. Some fear that would later start times in school the students will be left with no time to participate in extracurricular activities. These fears are unjust, If the school start times were later then the community would adjust. Athletes would even benefit from later start times, studies have shown that athletes with start times later than 9 are more likely to succeed in their given sport. Others fear that after school jobs would become less available to the students. A study conducted in Minnesota University ask local businesses it's later start times had negatively affected their workforce and the answer was a resounding no. Students in the workforce have even been shown to have more truancies or tardies than students who do not have to work. So it is reasonable for people to worry about themselves or their children, but their fears are based more on misconceptions than concrete
The national sleep foundation took a poll in 2006 showing the over one half of adolescents are getting less than 8 hours asleep (“Small”). Teens are supposed to get eight and half hours to nine hours of sleep. Schools’ starting at eight o’clock is absurd. Having teens get up at six or seven o’clock is very unhealthy for the brain. As a high school student it would help me if Broken Arrow Schools started later in the morning so I had time to completely wake up and eat breakfast to get my body going. Research shows that teens naturally go to sleep later and sleep later in the mornings (“Sleep”). Delaying the time school starts by thirty minutes to an hour could show an improvement on health in teens, their grades and morning traffic.
There are many opinions and studies about reforming school days. Some people are concerned that longer school days would bring more difficulties. However, there are numerous studies and practical examples that prove that we improve students’ performance by lengthening school days. Finally, the economy and our society will benefit from expanding school days.
Most children attend school for about 6.5 hours per day. Some people argue that this not enough time for children to master key concepts while others say that children spend too much time in school and on homework which leaves them little time for family or fun activities. “There are many benefits to year-round schooling—including consistency, less time spent relearning material, and the implications that year-round schooling has for closing the achievement gap” (Lynch, 2016, par. 1). Currently, more than 700 schools have extended their day. Massachusetts extended their school day so that it was 8 hours and found that they went up 44 percent in math,19 percent in science, and 39 percent in language arts (“Should students spend more time in
The alarm goes off at six am and the typical high school student is barely able to open their eyes. It is time to get up and prepare for a full day at school, about eight hours. Most teenagers, according to the National Sleep Foundation, will only get about six hours of sleep since they tend to stay up until midnight (“Should schools start later in the day?”). After getting ready, many students look forward to a nap in their first hour class despite the information they will miss. Teenagers seem to always have had trouble getting up in the morning, even earning the title of lazy from their parents. However, recent research on adolescent sleep patterns has produced a biological explanation for this tendency. This raises a serious question: why are high schools starting early in the morning when teenagers are biologically programmed to sleep in? For most cases, school start time has not been conformed to fit student physiological needs simply because of transportation issues.
Now that were in the middle of winter, chances are school will be canceled a few times. Since schools are savage, they don't give you any free days so you have to make up time. Most schools usually have different types of things they do for making up snow days. That is why i'm glad my schools lets the kids vote for what they want. If my school were to close for several days and we had to make up eight hours I would either choose to make it up on a Saturday, stay an extra hour everyday for eight days, or stay four hours on Saturday and Sunday.
