Psychology is the study of the mind which covers a wide range of characteristics like behaviors, emotions, and perceptions from the conscious to the unconscious. There is an abundance of theories and therapeutic procedures for therapists to incorporate into their practice. Every client is different and it is important for the therapist to recognize which therapeutic approach is best suited for the individual. Existential therapy, behavioral therapy, and reality therapy are three different approaches that can be integrated into one’s practice and counseling model. 155). The role of the therapist is to help clients take responsibility for their actions and behaviors and to discontinue putting the blame on others. They help individuals who have limited awareness and lead a restrictive existence, assume responsibility for their role in the world (Corey, 2013, p. 155). There are three phases to this therapeutic approach. Phase one is clarifying their assumptions about the world by examining their morals, values, and beliefs. During phase two clients are encouraged to engage in self-exploration that could lead to new attitudes and values. The final phase focuses on helping the client with the information they have learned about themselves and put them into action (Corey, 2013, p. 158). While CBT has many advantages, it alone does not encompass all of the concepts I believe are necessary to tackle a client’s needs. Therefore, I draw upon concepts from various theories to assist clients in achieving their goals. Pulling from Reality therapy, a key concept I utilize is focusing on what the client is doing and how to get them to evaluate whether they’re present actions are working for them. CBT does use some form of this in the sense that one must examine and establish their cognitive misconceptions; however, I prefer to extract this concept from Reality therapy because CBT tends to do so by focusing on the past. I am a firm believer that while the past can shape who you are, it does little good to remain focused on it. Focusing on overt behavior, precision in specifying the goals of treatment, development of specific treatment plans, and objective evaluation of therapy outcomes all come from Behavior therapy (Corey, 2013, p. 474). Behavior therapy is highly structured much like that of CBT. By utilizing this aspect of Behavior therapy, I am better able to closely observe where a client is currently and where they are headed. Lastly, I pull from Person-Centered therapy as the final key concept of my counseling approach. PCT focuses on the fact that client’s have the potential to become aware of their problems and resolve them (Corey, 2013). This Person-Centered therapy concept has overlap with CBT as

The field of psychology is a discipline, originated from many branches of science. It has applications from within a complete scope of avenues, from psychotherapy to professional decision-making. The flexibility and versatility of this field reflects its importance and demands in-depth analysis. Psychology was a division of philosophy until it developed independent scientific disciplines. The history of psychology was a scholarly study of the mind and behavior that dates back to the beginning of civilization. There are important details from previous theory psychologist, research have contributed to behaviorism approaches and have contributed towards specific current behavioral practices. Contemporary behavior therapy began to emerge into distinct practical and core learning theories concerning the needs and knowledge engaging cultural and professional differences.
The role of therapists is to develop positive reasoning and promote logical thinking in the client. The therapists help clients to develop self motivation and positive behaviors by embracing rational and logical thoughts. The client is expected to make a follow up of the ideas and concepts provided by the therapists. Both clients and therapists should be in constant communication to encourage positive thinking and develop logical and rational ideas.
In regards to the questions and answers, I feel as though my personal approach to counseling is based off of my own priorities I set forth in myself that follow more closely to the aspects of Reality Therapy, and Adlerian Therapy. Though Reality Therapy primarily focuses on the present, it still has some grounding in the past but not as much as Adlerian does. Even knowing this I still feel these two therapies are more closely related to my own belief system. I am in agreement with Reality Therapy, in that we are responsible for the choices we make. I trust that we can exercise great control over our lives, over how we can change to better ourselves, and to better our relationships with those around us. I feel that we all as a society are influenced by basic needs: belonging, survival, freedom, and power, and that these needs can be used as motivational tool when working with clients.
Existential therapy is concerned with one’s being; the world in which they live, the implication of time, and the mindfulness of being whole. The basic dimensions of the human condition, according to the existential approach, include (1) the capacity for self-awareness; (2) freedom and responsibility; (3) creating one’s identity and establishing meaningful relationships with other; (4) the search for meaning, purpose, values, and goals; (5) anxiety as a condition of living; and (6) awareness of death and nonbeing. All give significance to living and explore the degree to which a client is doing the things they value.
There are many theories out there that attempt to find a way to help people solve their problems. To do this though requires making a choice. A theoretical position is nothing more than taking a position on what are the causes of a person’s problems are and how to approach solving them. Fritz and Laura Perls are responsible for the founding of gestalt therapy in the 1940’s. From there on, Gestalt has contributed significantly to the field of psychotherapy, counseling, and personal development. When therapist uses this method, his or her ultimate aim is to ensure the client achieves personal growth and development. To achieve this outcome, gestalt utilizes existential philosophy and phenomenology. In summary, this form of therapy aims to empower the patient to use his internal and external senses for the purposes of developing personal responsibility and a self-supportive system (Franzke 1999; Corcoran & Daly 2008).
Reality therapy is a practical therapeutic method developed by Dr. William Glasser, which focuses on here and now rather the past, problem-solving rather than the issue at hand, and making better choices with specific goals established. Reality therapy is a time-limited, no-nonsense approach that Glasser developed and taught as a method of counseling which is based on choice theory, which states: “all we do is behave, almost all behavior is chosen, and we are driven by five basic needs” (William Glasser Institute, 2010).
The systems that I had originally identified most strongly with throughout my semester in Music in Psychotherapy were Person-Centered Therapy and Existential Therapy. Upon further research, I learned of Gestalt Therapy, which is an existential form of psychotherapy. We did not research this particular form in class, but found this system to be quite intriguing and felt that aspects of it would combine nicely with the others. Though I would very much like to, I have never been to any type of therapy in which I was the client. After doing the first reading for this class, which was the Person-Centered Therapy chapter, I quickly realized that even just studying the different systems on my own would become very beneficial to my own mental health. I also realized how difficult it would be. Certain activities and ideas that I was presented with in both Person-Centered and Existential presentations were actually quite painful for me to be apart of. These activities raised my level of awareness, as they were intended to do. In a way, they asked me to face certain things about myself and the world around me that I was not so sure that I like. At first, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to be aware.
The counseling approach I most identify with is Cognitive Therapy (CT) by Aaron Beck. It concentrates on the part a person’s thought process has in dysfunction and intervention. I agree with Albert Ellis 's Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and some aspects of the existential approach to counseling, but CT is my choice therapy. One of the primary beliefs in cognitive therapy is that a person 's perspective can influence emotional and behavioral reactions. I believe that if a person is able to reevaluate attitude and beliefs about a situation, the person can improve wellbeing. The person 's wellbeing can improve by altering the reactions he or she has to the situation and learning more
Reflecting on the Person-Centered Therapy, it is similar to the Existential Therapy because it focuses on the client/therapist relationship, where the therapist needs to be totally genuine, empathetic and non-judgmental toward their clients in order to gain the client’s trust. I like the fact that the Person-Centered Therapy views the client as their best authority on their own experience, and being fully capable of fulfilling their own potential for growth. I also like the fact that the therapist is non-directive, does not give advice and there is no specific technique involved. Person Centered Therapy can basically develop their own technique as their relationship develop with the client.
