The mock Press Conference was a both entertaining and informative experience. Prior to presenting my public statement, my nerves ran rampant. I was intimidated by the questions I could be asked and if I would know what the appropriate reply would be. However, after having seen some great press conferences I felt more confident about going up to present. One presentation that stood out to me was Lauren McMurray as tennis player Ryan Harrison. Conveying a message through the use of public speaking goes far beyond the words you say. When presenting a speech, there is much that goes into it, and more to truly get your message into the minds of the listeners. Every great speech consists of several key elements that are used to support and back up the words that are spoken. In 2011, Pamela Meyer presented her speech, “How to Spot a Liar,” as a TED Talks. The TED Talk “Why 30 is not the new 20” by Meg Jay, was a powerful and successful speech. Jay delivers an inspirational message to twenty-year-olds to not waste away important years of their life in an unmeaningful relationship or career. Instead she stresses the importance of searching for a life-long partner sooner rather than later in life. She also talked about taking career risks while still young, because these opportunities will likely be indefeasible later in life. Jay 's main points were very effective in persuading one to consider living by this set of social standards. The outside speaker that I saw took place on Monday November eleventh two thousand and thirteen, in the Saint Ignatius Science Center room one hundred and fifteen. The speaker of this presentation was Tom McDonnell elected CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Throughout McDonnell’s speech he talked about his experience attending Rockhurst University when it was an all boys school and his life after he graduated form Rockhurst and started his career. I thought that the speech was very well organized because I would assume that he made very good valid points, and when I say assume, I will elaborate on that more later on in my paper. It seemed that there was a clear introduction and body, but I was kind of surprised with the conclusion because he seemed to have just ended his speech. Or it might have been that his conclusion was so long that I just assumed to be part of the body.
Throughout the introduction of this book, it explains that the book was written for anyone who is involved in any way with investigative interviewing. The introduction has a specific section written about Police Officer training and their roles. Yeschke states that officers are perceived as always in a hurry and rush through processes with victims. He says this is true a lot of the times because officers are often criticized by their superiors for spending too much time on a call. Even after a review of log activity, it shows that even when officers have sufficient time to conduct a thorough investigation, they do not. Yeschke says that usually the main reasons are they perceive interviewing as being useless and unimportant, their supervisors actually discourage it, or that they are not properly equipped to carry out said investigation. The first factor that worked in her favor was her presentation herself. She was professionally dressed, and her presenting the objective herself, made the information more personable. Despite this, Silverman’s body language worked negatively against her. Her body language was very minimal and did not reflect an image of confidence. Silverman also brought her own personal journal as an example to share. The journal was perceivable evidence that supported her case, but because Silverman held the journal throughout her twenty-minute speech, it restricted her movement and created a barrier between her and the audience. Apart from this, Silverman had several other visual examples of her work that were both appropriate to the media seminar and supported her purpose. For instance, she used a YouTube video in her presentation, that she created to exemplify her idea of “Big Talk” (Silverman, “How to Skip the Small Talk and Connect with Anyone”). I believe that, if I feel nervous in the future, I will not be afraid of this emotion like what I did before. This course provided me knowledge on how to make me relax. Little by little, I have gained the confidence of combating the fear of public speaking in this course. All these precious experience will continue benefiting me in the future. Thus, I am proud to say that I have fullfilled the course objectives and enhanced my public speaking

I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).
There are two principal types of structured interviews namely situational and behavioral based. Situational interviews assess an applicant’s ability to project what his or her behavior would be in future through speculative situations.The presumption behind the use of the a situational interview is that the goals or intentions individuals set for themselves are good predictors of what they will do in the future (Russell, 2006).
In order to successfully deliver an oral presentation such as a speech, the speaker must follow certain procedures to ensure his message can be conveyed clearly. Vast amounts of research are essential in order to acquire the knowledge necessary to be able to speak about a topic comfortably and answer any questions the audience might have during the course of the presentation. After acquiring such knowledge about the topic of the presentation the speaker will feel more confident, confidence is key in delivering speeches and other oral presentations because it makes the speaker look more credible and trustworthy. In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. In my first speech, “The any old bag speech” I quickly learned the do’s, don’ts and concepts of my speech performance.
SUPPORT: Going into the CSUN speech day for coms 190, I was only going to go because I had to. When I left, I had a completely different outlook. Speech is a form of art and I didn 't truly recognize that until this day. These were the best speeches/presentations I had yet to see in my life. I focused on how the presenters made eye contact with almost every person in the room. When they made eye contact with me, it was startling but reassuring at the same time. I realized this would be something I would want my own audience to feel. Also their hand gestures were very smart and well thought-out. It was clear that they were practiced and mastered. It 's almost as if their gestures made sense, something I was desperately struggling
...dvanced public speaker, because I demonstrate elocution, confidence, personality, and exceptional knowledge when I am public speaking. These components of a speaker are reflected in the concepts delivery, spotlight effect or audience apprehension, style, rhetoric, and credibility. While I have some strengths, like creative writing enabling me to write rhetorical devices and demonstrate my personal style, I also have many weaknesses to work on, like building confidence so the spotlight effect doesn’t occur and working on my pronunciation. I turn my anxiety into something positive, instead of allowing it to become a crutch. All of these qualities affect how an audience receives any of my speeches, so I plan to work on them to the best of my abilities so I can be a great speaker. I may be a work in progress, but that does not mean I haven’t already achieved many goals.
