For my project, I did many different activities. The first activity I completed was observing a Davidson County School Board meeting on the topic of an information breach that occurred. The next activity I completed was collecting trash around the Ledford High School campus on two different occasions. Then I was a buddy for a Special Olympics athlete when it was held at Ledford. Finally, I was a buddy for multiple athletes at the Miracle League of High Point. I chose to attend the School Board meeting because I was interested to see how the release of Davidson County employee information affected their lives. My mother is a teacher, and I was curious if other employees shared her concerns. I chose to collect trash around Ledford because Mr. …show more content…
In civics class, one of the first things that I learned was the responsibilities of a citizen. These responsibilities are voluntary choices that each person gets to make, but I feel that they are things every person should strive to achieve. The two responsibilities that stood out to me with this project were the responsibility to contribute to the well being of all members of society, and the responsibility to take action in a cause you believe in. By doing these things, a person can easily be exposed to something they may be passionate about and may want to take further action in that area. Whether it is a small or large task you perform to help your community, it still benefits someone else that may be in need, and it often makes you feel good in return. Overall, I feel like people should do basic good deeds throughout their everyday life, because you never know how something so simple could impact someone’s life. The only problem that I faced with this project was the difficulty of taking pictures of my activities. Two out of the four places I volunteered at involved being very active the whole time, and it was slightly hard to find an opportunity to take any sort of picture. In addition, it was complicated to take pictures at the Ledford Special Olympics because of privacy issues. There were so many children, parents, and teachers around constantly that it made not getting anyone else in a picture
The prima facie duties that William David Ross has listed include duties of fidelity, reparation, gratitude, justice, beneficence, self-improvement, and non-maleficence. Duties of fidelity and reparation rest on previous acts that one has performed, and acting on these duties are acts such as promise-keeping (duties of fidelity) and making amends for previous wrongful acts (duties of reparation), while duties of gratitude rest on previous acts that others have performed. There is a duty associated with the distribution of pleasure or good regardless of its recipient, and this is termed as duties of justice. An additional duty rests on the mere fact that there are other beings in this world to whom we can be of assistance to: duties of beneficence. Duties of self-improvement claim that there are intrinsic moral reasons for one to improve oneself and finally, duties of non-maleficence states that there are intrinsic moral reasons to not harm others. Duties are placed on the list only when they have been judged to be basic moral reaso...

So to summarize the whole thing is that our fundamental moral duty is to make the world a better place for everyone. An action is moral depending on its results. All of the results of your action are important, not only the short term ones, which are the different between expected results and actual results. And when you fail to the maximum well-being you become immoral. [4]
The principles of proper civic duty are to find the issue, discuss it, find a solution, and then carry out the solution. All of this should be done while following the “‘Civic Golden Rule’-that neighbors should treat neighbors as they themselves would like to be treated” (p.135). In this excerpt, Nader shows an example of how civic duty should be carried out by alluding to the actions of his mother. After a devastating hurricane hit Nader’s hometown of Winsted, his mother came up with a solution to prevent the same amount of destruction from happening the next time a hurricane hit. After realizing that a dry dam was the solution to prevent destruction, Nader’s mom pushed the town to build a dam. Even after being rejected once, she tried once again with even more determination and succeeded starting a project to build a dam. After the dam was built, there has not been another flood in their town. Nader’s mom was able to carry out her civic duty by identifying the issue, finding a solution, and executing her plan. The tradition of civic duty is teaching people how to improve their community in the proper
Are teachers enforcing discipline mechanisms in a healthy way for children? Researchers would answer no to this question because of one major factor: removing recess from a child’s school day. In Jessica Lahey’s article, “Students Who Lose Recess Are the Ones Who Need It Most”, she states that “schools continue to take away recess privileges as a penalty for academic or behavioral transgressions”. Many teachers follow this procedure because they assume that they are teaching the child how to act with appropriate behaviors. However, it is a proven fact that eliminating a student’s recess results in a negative outcome. Therefore, recess should not be removed from a child’s school day because this recreation plays a role in their physical health,
If we all hold ourselves accountable for our actions and strive to achieve above and beyond, but for the purpose of the common good of society, we will not only be setting a good example for one another, but helping out those who are struggling. There should never be a reason for not trying to excel according to Beecher in Source No 2. According to source No. 3 from the Josephson Institute of ethics, one should “do what they are supposed to do”. If one has a good understanding of the outcome of their actions and the impact they have and they accept it then they are upholding their civic duty. This is similar to Abe Lincoln’s thoughts in his message to congress on Dec 1, 1862 when he said, “In times like the present, men should utter nothing for which they would not willingly be responsible through time and eternity” (Source No. 1) . Here it can be agreed that our actions impact our future, thus, it is important to make sure that what we are doing is upholding our good standards of our constitution. Source No. 4 also proves that we are makers of the pie. In this it breaks down the meaning of responsibility and compares it to our the true meaning of our constitution being our basic given rights as humans...such as the freedom to move, and feel and
Lesson pacing is a very important aspect of teaching as well as student learning. Lesson pacing is just as it sounds, the rate of speed at which a lesson moves along and can be adjusted to a rate at which student learn best. Lesson pacing is extremely important because it is one of many aspects in which influences the successfulness of students. Lesson pacing is needed in a classroom because it allows the teacher to keep kids motivated and engaged. For example, a teacher can speed up or slow down a lesson so that it garners and maintains student engagement. The more that students are engaged in a lesson, the higher the likelihood that they will learn and remember the content of that lesson. Teachers often feel that the more they talk and demonstrate

The first question posed in the survey that teachers in my school district were asked to respond to dealt with the basic procedures for school discipline. The question dealt with asking teachers to respond to the question that asked if teachers felt if any staff member were doing things that were not consistent with the main objectives of the school’s discipline program, or are focused on discipline issues that may not be important. The other alternate option available to the respondents, was that the school’s overall objectives as they dealt with discipline was clear, everyone’s efforts were directly related to accomplishing goals and that the team was able to set priorities by referring to objectives. The results of the survey indicated
The school that I visited was new. It was the first year of the school opening. The school board had combined two schools into one, so the students had to adjust to their new environments and new individuals. They seemed to be getting along well with each other. Since the school is new the teacher has to adjust to new problems that araise. Times for the subjects and times for using the computer labs change. So the teacher must always be fixable for anything. In this observation of this classroom I learned about the enjoyment of teaching. How you have to adapt to each of the students.
One problem with this concept of it being a civic duty, is that some Americans don't care enough about the well being of fellow citizens to intervene. A witness of Miss genovese murder told police, ““I was tired”, he said without emotion, “I went back to bed.””. We need to look out for our neighbors and their safety, even when it is not convenient. It is important that citizens always have their ears and hearts open to helping others. Horace Mann, who served in the Massachusetts State legislature, once said, “Doing nothing for others is the undoing of ourselves”. When we lose the desire to help others, we start to truly lose the meaning of being an American and
I attended a second grade class at Smallville Elementary on February 22, 2014; the class began promptly at 0855. There are 26 children in this second grade class. There are 15 male students and 11 female students. The student diversity is 2 Hispanics, 1 African-American, 1 East Indian, and 1 New Zealander (White but with an extreme accent). Three children were left-handed.
The students that I observed in the classroom were of middle to high school. I went to see 8th, freshman, 10th , and seniors classes, they seemed excited and very curious to why I was there. The middle school was more alive and rambunctious while I observed them. The High school kids were more relaxed, more comical. Some were paying attention while others seemed tuned out to the lecture or involved in socialization with friends within the class. By the end of the class Mr. Hasgil had restored the attention of everyone by using tactics such as history jeopardy with candy as the prize with the high school kids. In both he middle school and high school the kids were mostly Caucasian with a mixture of black, Asian , and Hispanic in the classes.
I signed up to be volunteer for community service hours for my honors class. I choose this particular one because I thought it would be easy, but after few weeks, I felt honored for having been a part of it. I’ve never volunteered before, except for feeding the homeless with my church a few time. But this was a totally different experience. I chose to work with the Salvation Army and had no idea what I was in for. In my experiences with the Salvation Army I felt I succeed, and made a difference.
Having the opportunity to observe and work in classes while interview a teacher, I have gained insight and knowledge about my future career choice. It was a great experience that has done nothing but help myself become better educated about the daily life of teachers and the working classrooms. During my time in the classroom, I learned more about the children as well as the profession of teaching. It was an experienced that opened my eyes to the actual reality of teaching. Having the chance to sit down and interview a teacher, I learned more about the assessments that are so important, the struggles that go along with the career and what is needed from myself to become a well rounded educator.
