My overall feeling about implementing the mentor study with the children were good. I enjoyed reading the different Eric Carle books with my student. This was perfect timing ,in class we were studying a dance from one of his books, so the students already knew a lot about him. One of the things that was difficult about doing the mentor project would be, all my students were wanting to write about different stories. I know that was the point of the project, but I wish I had of done the creating of the book one at a time. I felt like it became very overwhelming with the students telling me about their stories that they were creating. One of the things that went well was the mentor card. His pictures didn’t look as if he drew them or painted them. Something else that we noticed about his books were, he loves to write about animals mostly all the books that we read about or even talked about had something to do with an animal. His books also has a lesson behind each reading. If I had to do the mentor study again I would do it with a smaller group. I felt like I didn’t get to focus on all my students the way I would’ve liked too. Another thing that I would’ve changed was the way I had my students create their books. If I could redo it I would have them come over to me one at a time to create their book, instead of all of them coming over at once. What I learned from the process is how to implement the mentor study in my lesson plans. Normally when we introduce a book, we just show it to the class and talk about what we think it’s going to be about. Now with the mentor study I learned how to teach my class about the author and the illustrators through a fun and interesting way. I think teaching it this way gives them a lot of hands on experiences about the author and his books. It also, gives them the opportunity to make their own books.
