You will interact with numerous people during your lifetime; however, only important and significant people will make influences in your life. In the movie Something the Lord Made directed by Joseph Sargent, Vivien Thomas, an African-American carpenter who dreams of going to college and becoming a doctor, is forced to work as a lab assistant under the instructions and guidance of an arrogant and eccentric cardiologist, Dr. Alfred Blalock. Despite having no college degree, Vivien Thomas is able to learn medical and surgical skills through the guidance of Dr. Blalock, and their cooperation ultimately leads to the discovery of a cure for blue baby syndrome. Similar to Dr. Blalock’s tutelage, I have learned to love biology under the teaching and mentoring of my biology teacher, Dr. Cron. Even though both Dr. Cron and Dr. Blalock are excellent instructors, they are extremely and uniquely different in their mentoring styles. Differences in mentoring styles can have huge influences and impacts on the mentees’ development of skills, and personalities.
How the mentors guide their mentees is crucial and essential to the development of the mentees’ skills. In the movie Something the Lord Made, as an ambitious and arrogant cardiologist, Dr. Blalock told other doctors that he “sees opportunities” whenever they “see risks” (Sargent, 2004). From this quote, it can be concluded that Dr. Blalock is exceptionally skillful and has high confidence in himself. Additionally, this shows that Vivien Thomas will be able to learn a great deal of skills since he is mentored by a competent doctor. Differences in mentoring and guiding styles of the mentors can have a considerable influence and impact on the mentee’s development of the skills and personalities. Through the arrogant and ambitious yet skillful guidance of Dr. Blalock, Vivien Thomas is able to learn how to rightfully challenge conventional theories in order to develop revolutionary changes in science. Additionally, Thomas also gains more confidence in himself and has the courage to stand up against discrimination. On the other hand, I have also learned how to be diligent and passionate about what I do as a consequence of Dr. Cron’s caring and dedicated mentoring styles. In the end, the tutelage and guidance of the mentors can have lasting effects on their mentees’ lives.
A mentor is someone who shares one’s wisdom, knowledge or experience with one’s junior person so that the person could learn and grow. Mentors have many different style of training or passing on their knowledge to other people. The movie “Something the Lord Made” directed by Joseph Sargent shows a kind of mentoring style in between the two main characters Dr. Blalock and Vivan Thomas who invent a way to treat “blue babies” back in the 40s. Vivan Thomas is a brilliant black men who wishes to go to college, and to become a doctor; however, due to the Depression, he loses all his saving. Instead of going to college, Thomas finds an opportunity to work in the hospital. Dr. Blalock, Thomas’s employer, discovers Thomas’s incredible knowledge in medical, and promotes Thomas as his assistant instead of a janitor. Dr. Blalock is a mentor to Thomas. Dr. Blalock trained Thomas with only a high school certification becomes a medical scientific lab technician. Although Dr. Blalock’s mentoring style of Vivan Thomas is similar from my high school speech team coach Mrs. Kuznicki mentoring style of me, they both speak out their criticism of other without consider other’s feeling, and also acknowledge mentees for what they have done, but Mrs. Kuznicki treats me with more patient, less selfishness and encouragement than Dr. Blalock treats Thomas.
Jamison describes another medical figure in her life that she referred to as Dr. M. Dr. M was Jamison’s primary cardiologist, a figure who is involved in some of the most intimate details of Jamison’s life. However, Jamison describes Dr. M by saying she, “…wasn’t personal at all” (14). Dr. M would actually record personal information about Jamison on a tape recorder, however, Jamison would hear Dr. M referring to her as “patient” instead of by her name. This example demonstrates that Dr. M was indeed putting in the minimal effort needed to keep her clients, however, no additional effort was put into the process of learning about her patients. Jamison says that, “…the methods of her mechanics [were] palpable between us…” (18). Dr. M would not even put any effort into disguising her lack of interest of getting to know Jamison. This atmosphere of apathy that is exuded by Dr. M naturally causes Jamison to retract from Dr. M, which creates an environment that is not good for cultivating
There is little scientific knowledge when it comes to mentoring effects on future outcomes; in addition posing confusion as to how these programs continue to emerge. A major component in regards to program effectiveness is in measurement or evaluation of its structure (Deutsch, N., & Spencer, R., 2009). This is done by conducting surveys, focus groups, and interviews (Deutsch, N., & Spencer, R. (2009); Karcher, M., & Nakkula, M. (2010); Diehl, D. C., Howse, R. B., & Trivette, C. M. (2011); Osgood, 2012; Williams, 2011). Studies gives the researcher insight into knowledge that otherwise wouldn’t be known, in order to understand mentoring reactions and relationship styles better (Karcher, M., & Nakkula, M. (2010); Christens, B. D., & Peterson, N. A. (2012); Diehl et al., 2011; Leyton‐Armakan, J., Lawrence, E., Deutsch, N., Lee Williams, J., & Henneberger, A. (2012); Meyer, K. C., & Bouchey, H. A. A question I have been asked more often than not, “What would you rather be if not a doctor?” Well, my journey as a doctor has seen a share of crests and troughs, but I will not have it any other way. I am a book lover, and every good read is time saved; I have trekked mountains, and every step brought forth a sense of achievement; I have been recognized for my English debating skills many a time. Every cup held was precious, but none of it so fulfilling and rewarding as another human being trusting you with his breath. This texture of human relationships is unique to this profession, and is probably what makes it sublime to the eyes of a common man.
Medicine has proven to be an elusive, tempestuous creature. It has appeared to me in visions nightmarish and calm, despairing and joyous. My pursuit has been an odyssey, taking me farther into my heart than I ever dreamed possible. However, before I could even begin to approach the emotional, physical and Intellectual demands of a physician's life, I had to gain a better understanding of myself, my identity and beliefs. Only with this stronger sense of self have I felt the confidence to give my best and my all, and to make my contribution to society.

Experiencing different aspects of medicine has made me a more competent individual to thrive in this field and has deepened my interest and passion to pursue medicine as a career.I believe that those who fight with so little against so much truly need others to help them in their struggle. Being a physician is not only becoming a successful professional. I will work hard to bring about necessary changes to end social disparities, so that more groups in society receive the best healthcare. By making a difference in their lives, I will receive rewarding experiences that are worth all the hard work and sacrifice my chosen career requires.
Counselling, coaching and mentoring are all ways to help people achieve success and as a result, they have many similarities; however, there are subtle difference distinguishing them from one another. Counselling does not have one singular definition, as it is prevalent in many different areas of psychology. A documentary Doctors ' Diaries produced real-life stories of seven first-year medical students from Harvard University. The film shows emotions and mental stress that goes through medical students while becoming a doctor and how it affects them. Medical students choose medicine or pre-med as a career to help save people, but the challenges interns interfere with are their personal life and education. At first, the interns were excited about their future and then over time they became tired and damage in certain ways; Tom Tarter was one of the interns that had to go through their medical education, internship, and family life at 21 years old.
The movie “The Doctor” is a good example of how communications in the health field work to benefit not only the patient, but the doctor too. In this movie, the main character, also known as Jack McKee, is a heart surgeon. The movie begins by showing how McKee’s attitude towards his patients tends to be inappropriate. Jack jokes about his patients and laughs at their concerns. His home life is also a struggle; his relationships with his wife and son are falling apart. The movie takes a turn when Jack becomes suddenly ill. He begins coughing up blood. He meets with a specialist by the name of Lesley. Tests reveal that Jack has a serious tumor on his vocal cords. He has now become the patient. He begins treatment but the results are not what they expect. Along the way, he befriends a brain tumor patient by the name of June. She will teach Jack how to empathize. He will learn how to feel and communicate not only with his wife and son, but for his patients as well.
Coaching and mentoring are not about learning to do something the right way, but are about helping to lead an individual to find their own way of doing it practically and efficiently. Coaching and mentoring sessions are guided with theoretical models, which help focus both the coach and the coachee in attaining desired outcomes for problem situations. However, even with the aid of theoretical models not everyone can coach another person. The first and far most important attribute of a coach is the ability to build relationships with the coachee in that the coachee feels safe and trusting towards the coach, without the capability to interact with the client there may be a lack of progress or motivation. Another important skill of a coach is not to judge.

My passion for a career in Clinical laboratory science stems from a key experience with a li-censed Clinical laboratory scientist. On one day in the church , I was in dire need of help finding a job that can help me study medical in the future. For the first time I encountered professional-ism, knowledge, and humanity all at once. And this wasn’t a one-off experience. Each time I re-turned to the church, the exact same thing occurred: The Clinical laboratory scientist never seized to take the opportunity to encourage and help me knows better about the great work of Clinical laboratory scientists. From that moment, I decided to do my master in that field.
My ethical and moral views, beliefs, attitudes and values have been fashioned by an up bringing that centred on Christian beliefs. Even though religion was not forced upon me as a child, my mother raised us all with a strong sense of right and wrong. Along with the influence of my family, the Navy has had a big influence on the person I am. The Navy has a strong ethos of what is expected of the personnel that serve; this is made up of the following: Leadership, High Professional Standards, and Courage in Adversity, Determination, Loyalty, Mutual Respect, Discipline, A Sense of Humour, Teamwork, and A Can Do Attitude. Most recently of all though, the biggest thing that has influenced me as a person and a parent has been my experiences of working with young people. This includes acting as a Youth Advisor for Portsmouth City Council, a Mentor for Barnardos and a Youth Advisor for East Sussex County Council. I am currently working in two secondary schools as part of my resettlement from the Navy. This has given me the experience of working with young people living in virtual poverty, in constant trouble with the Police and education services and some young people with varying levels of disabilities. This work has given me a good ability to stay impartial, to be non judgemental and has given me a capacity to treat people a lot more emphatically than I was ever able to. This is because I have been exposed to a greater range of problems and personalities than I have been used to in the Navy. These are qualities that I will hopefully be able to transfer into my coaching practice.
