Empathy has been the subject of scrutiny for many philosophers and writers throughout the years. Harriet Beecher Stowe was one of these speculators and ended up writing an entire story to portray her understanding of what empathy is. She writes in Uncle Tom’s Cabin that if we were all to simply do what makes us feel right and feel strong about it, then we will naturally become more empathetic and thereby a benefactor of the human race. This notion, however, has been contested by many and Leslie Jamison is no exception. Jamison describes another medical figure in her life that she referred to as Dr. M. Dr. M was Jamison’s primary cardiologist, a figure who is involved in some of the most intimate details of Jamison’s life. However, Jamison describes Dr. M by saying she, “…wasn’t personal at all” (14). Dr. M would actually record personal information about Jamison on a tape recorder, however, Jamison would hear Dr. M referring to her as “patient” instead of by her name. This example demonstrates that Dr. M was indeed putting in the minimal effort needed to keep her clients, however, no additional effort was put into the process of learning about her patients. Jamison says that, “…the methods of her mechanics [were] palpable between us…” (18). Dr. M would not even put any effort into disguising her lack of interest of getting to know Jamison. She was going to be spending a large portion of time in the hospital to recover and he was always looking for ways to help her. An example of this is was during one night when, “…he was willing to lie down in the mess of wires, to stay…” (Jamison 21) with Jamison throughout the night. In fact, he stayed with her for five nights to help her through the struggle. His effort even carried outside of the hospital when he spent time in the church praying for her. The effort that he put into helping Jamison furthered his relationship with her and demonstrated that he genuinely cares for her. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings with others. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, there are many characters who showed the quality of empathy. A few examples who undoubtedly showed empathy were the main characters Jem, Atticus, and the narrator Scout Finch. These characters learned and demonstrated compassion throughout the book.
In Empathy, Stephen Dunn, who went to war to fight for his country. When he was on the leave from the army, he felt that it was the beginning of empathy for himself. In Too Much Happiness, Alice Munro learns about the significance of the relationship between a young mathematician named Sophia and her professor. The professor admits that one of his self-interest was for a student to challenge him completely, who is not only capable of following the rules of his own mind but to open up his mind. The interplay between empathy and self-interest is that they both effect on each other in many ways, such as, we benefit as a whole from selfless self-interest and caring for others more than we would from the survival of one at the cost of everyone else.
In “Defining a Doctor,” Zuger compares specific behaviors and attitudes of the male and the female intern. Zuger begins to observe how her two interns handle medicine and how they connect with their patients on a personal level. Zuger finds the woman intern to be more prepared by how she brought notebooks and pens every day to work while the man intern would come with empty pockets instead. The women soon began to grow emotionally attached to her patients and would work late hours, sometimes not bothering to go home and rest. In contrast, the man showed up on time to work and would leave as scheduled. The woman would not only do her job to get more things done efficiently but she would even do others work while, the male intern wouldn’t attempt to do anyone else’s work other than his own. When it came to that time when their patient would pass, the women would cry while the male shrugged his shoulders. The women might have had a better relationship since it was easier for her to emotionally connect with her patient than the man. Zuger concludes that “The women cared too much” while “the man cared to little.” She worked too hard, and he could not be prodded into working hard enough. The women distinguish that her patient was “hers” and did everything she could to make to make them feel comfortable. According to Arianna Huffington in the article “Empathy: What We Need Now”, during hardships and instability of society, empathy is needed to find solutions to those issues. Huffington writes about how empathy is needed in our country in order to produce a positive social change. She begins by giving an example of a movement that Martin Luther King created and how empathy was a part of this movement. King as well spoke of how empathy is the sign of living. To become involved in the situations of humanity in order to improve it, displays that empathy is the core of a human’s existence. After reading this article, I do agree with Huffington about how individuals need to fully understand and put themselves within the situation to fully comprehend the issue to solve.

When we think of social change, several of the themes in the literature we have discussed are based upon this concept of empathy. In To Kill a Mockingbird, there’s the repetition of the idea that you should stand in someone’s shoes before judging them. In Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, we see a liberal family who finds it difficult to accept interracial marriage when having to personally deal with the issue. In Milk, Harvey discusses how the gay movement has a better chance if more people come out, where if each person knows at least one “homosexual” there’s a better chance of the movement gaining public approval. For social change to occur, one needs to be aware of and sensitive to the issues at hand, and conscious of how everyone’s lives are differently affected in one way or another. Empathy is an important vehicle for creating lasting social change.

As the story begins, the unnamed doctor is introduced as one who appears to be strictly professional. “Aas often, in such cases, they weren’t telling me more than they had to, it was up to me to tell them; that’s why they were spending three dollars on me.” (par. 3) The doctor leaves the first impression that he is one that keeps his attention about the job and nothing out of the ordinary besides stating his impressions on the mother, father and the patient, Mathilda. Though he does manage to note that Mathilda has a fever. The doctor takes what he considers a “trial shot” and “point of departure” by inquiring what he suspects is a sore throat (par. 6).
