I am excited to be submitting my application to Georgetown University School of Medicine, as this school’s mission and values reflect my own beliefs on the role of a physician. I believe that there is no fixed template to healthcare; medicine and health will vary across time, regions, and individuals, and as future physicians, it is crucial for us to recognize that. While standard science education is certainly critical, a broadened approach that draws on other knowledge and our own life experiences is just as essential to delivering quality healthcare. This requires respect and compassion and prioritizing their comfort and values. I believe that as future physicians, we must be open to the different identities and perspectives of each individual in order to try to understand their beliefs and concerns. This level of empathy allows us to connect with patients on a deeper level and treat them with better quality care. Given this, I was immediately drawn to Georgetown’s Literature and Medicine program. Having taken a similarly named course during my undergraduate career, I recognize how literature, fiction or non-fiction, can create a compelling narrative that draws us into the mind of the writer and the characters. Medically related narratives raise issues that we will be confronted with later on in our careers, such as the respective responsibilities of the patient and physician, the role of medical ethics, and the value of compassion and empathy. This program will help me to become a more reflective and empathetic individual that places the beliefs and comfort of the patient at the forefront of my professional practice, and can competently cater to the needs of a diverse
Dr. Atul Gawande, a Harvard Medical School graduate and writer for The New Yorker, phenomenally illustrates the unknown side of healthcare professions in his book, Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science. By exploring the ethical and analytical aspects of medicine while entertaining readers with relatable anecdotes, Gawande impresses on his audience the importance of recognizing the wonders of the healthcare field, as well as the fallibility of those within it.
When we see patients, we must remember that we are not simply treating a disease. We are caring for people with lives, hobbies, jobs, families, and friends, who are likely in a very vulnerable position. We must ensure that we use the status of physicians to benefit patients first and foremost, and do what we promised to when we entered the profession: provide care and improve quality of life, and hopefully leave the world a little better than it was
Admittance into the University of Georgia’s Honors Program would push me to continually test my potential in the pursuit of my Pre-Medical studies. I take pride in challenging myself to completely master a field of study that enhance my capabilities, and therefore, prepare myself to strive for my next goal in life. In order to grow into a better and improved self, one would need to test unfamiliar waters and reach new heights. One banner hanging on campus spoke to me the most: Cura Personalis. I was in absolute awe. As I walked around Creighton’s gorgeous campus, I had the good fortune to bump into Father K. I had the opportunity to read “Doctors” by Anne Sexton. My initial reaction to this text was that the poem is endearing, Sexton truly grasps the nature of not only doctors but also everyone who is involved with the care of a patient, from the doctors and RN’s all the way down to the CNA’s and Dietary Aids. All work with “herbs” whether it be a Doctor giving out painkillers or a Dietary Aid bringing a warm meal with a smile, all factors go into the “gentleness” and “do no harm” so that the patient will get better.
I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. A documentary Doctors ' Diaries produced real-life stories of seven first-year medical students from Harvard University. The film shows emotions and mental stress that goes through medical students while becoming a doctor and how it affects them. Medical students choose medicine or pre-med as a career to help save people, but the challenges interns interfere with are their personal life and education. At first, the interns were excited about their future and then over time they became tired and damage in certain ways; Tom Tarter was one of the interns that had to go through their medical education, internship, and family life at 21 years old.
The narrator felt confident and comfortable with being treated by this physician with only knowledge of an office. However, this was not the physician’s office and he is lead to another office; one that is barren and anonymous. His opinion of the doctor quickly changed as he noticed small details about the physician’s demeaner and appearance; the physician did not appear intense or determined, he was too polite and soft looking, and he spoke as if he was playing a part. The environment of the physician and his workplace left a negative impression on the author. The author believed that the aura of a physician should be that of a magician and the lack of style lead him to search for a different doctor. Later, the author discussed how for a patient and physician to reach each other the mood of the hospital should be modified. As a medical professional, there are many different aspects of the job. Most of the journey towards the profession is filled with long hours of studying all the technical terms and symptoms for a diagnosis. While all these aspects are important, humanities and fine arts aspect of learning should be incorporated into the studies of the current and future healthcare professionals as well. Literature and art impact and improve many different aspects of improving one’s skills as a carer, including, ethics, self-reflection, aesthetics and interpretation, empathy, and ambiguity. All parts of these aspects are interconnected with one another, with one aspect also enhancing the others, however, I believe the most important aspects are the ethics, empathy, and ambiguity that in which studying literature and art can provide for the learning healthcare provider.
My interest in public health makes SJSU a natural choice for graduate study. The research interests of the reputed faculty members will enable me to keep in touch with the latest developments in these fields. I strongly believe San Jose state university with its distinctive stamp in public health will set me on the path to contribute significantly to the ongoing research while the cultural diversity creates a nurturing environment to enhance my future. The excellent facilities offered by your department will provide an environment conducive to successful graduate work.
