I find myself following in the literary footsteps of my beloved sister, Alyssa. Her pure love for reading and her stretched imagination has intrigued me ever since I was younger. She always had her nose in a book, and being her little brother I tried to emulate her thirst for words. My sister is my role model, in my everyday life, but I also have to look up to her when it comes to reading and writing. She is able to manipulate words to conform a complete and truly beautiful thought. Alyssa has impacted my literacy and language development through her passion for reading and her ever-growing imagination, which has lead to the way I read, write, and converse in everyday life.
My sister loves to read write even now that she is in college. Alyssa is a Television, Film & Media Studies major at California State University Los Angeles, and I have seen the scrip’s she has developed. I have seen how imaginative she is when she puts a production together. She has told me that the reason she is so creative is because she has dabbled in many different worlds. For instance, she has grown up in Hogwarts, she was a foster kid with the Klaus, Violet and Sunny, and she has fought in the hunger games, and tried to find the lighting bolt before the summer solstice. My sister has submerged herself in so many different worlds and I see the look in her eye when she reads about these adventures, which make me want to read about these same worlds.
I get my reading interest from my sister, when she was done with a book I would pick it up so that I can encounter those same experiences, and because I did so I realized every book is similar and different at the same time. Alyssa has shown me that by opening a book you are able to apply any story to life and if you are able to do that you are able to write about anything because there are so many ways of talking about life. You need an imagination to write, you have to be creative when you write, and by reading how others have developed there ideas you are able to develop you own. And that idea of development has helped me develop conversations that are seen to be irrelevant but are perfectly connected because of the tools (writing and books) my sister has shared with me.
All in all, my writing has been directed by the thought of my sister and how much I want to live those same experienced while writing or reading. I have infused creative writing and academic writing which has helped me evolve in my everyday life.
One reading that spoke to me in many different levels was Jane Gallop’s: The ethics of reading: Close Encounters. This reading was my favorite when it came to reading complex and sophisticated text during my time in the writing arts program. Prior to reading this article I would always jump to conclusions about a piece of text without fulling understanding all its main ideas and hidden messages. After finishing as many stories as the class has, one can retain abundant amounts of information. The information could be as detailed as the name given to Beowulf’s sword, Hrunting, to general information like knowing the reasons behind the Green Knight's teachings in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Literature is precisely complicated and challenging, it is the depth the reader is willing to go into the story to comprehend that will make the difference. It is easy to scrape the top of the surface, but to go deep down and learn more than imagined is the hard part. Finding the similarities, conflicts, and literary devices is the way to learn about a story, not just reading and doing nothing. The extra effort makes the biggest difference when learning about a story, the only thing needed is the push to get started.
There are many aspects for my mind to conceive while reading the articles why I write by George Orwell and Joan Didion. There are many different factors in triggering an author’s imagination to come up with what they want to write, and why they want to write it. In most writings a purpose is not found before the writer writes, but often found after they decide to start writing.

The very first chapter we read of Mindful Writing changed my perspective to see that anyone and everyone can be a writer. Brian Jackson, the author of Mindful Writing, wrote, “In this book I want to convince you that anyone writing anything for any reason is a writer…Writing is not something we do just in school. It is a vital means of influence in all facets of life.” It was through that very first reading that I began to think about writing as more than just a dreaded part of school, and I began to think of myself as more than just a student forced to write. Our very first assignment, My Writing Story, helped me to reflect on my identity as a writer. I realized that I was a writer every time I wrote in my journal or captioned an Instagram post. Throughout the semester, as I came to love writing more with each paper I wrote, I was able to create my identity as a writer. I learned that I loved research and analyzing others’ thoughts and ideas, but that writing simply on my own opinions, wasn’t my favorite past time. In this article, Brooks et. al (2010) focuses on black females and ways they are portrayed through some of the struggles within them. “This article examines how black girlhood is constructed through fiction” (p. 7). It is important to make a connection when reading something. Connections can be made either by text to self, text to text, or text to world. According to this article, Sharon Draper states that she likes to give her readers a strong character to read about so that the reader can fully connect (Draper, 2009, p. 8). This supports my belief of the importance of making a connection through reading. As these few tales reveal, my memories of writing are strongly connected with the intense emotions I felt as I grew up. They are filled with joy, disappointment, boredom, and pride. I believe that each of these experiences has brought me to where I am today. I can only look to the future and hope that my growth will continue, and my writing will reflect those changes within me. In retrospect, the genres of books which I read gradual vary as my age periods. Additionally, those books which I have read browsed my horizon and improved my understanding ability to some degree.
My literacy journey commenced at a young age. My story begins with the typical bed time stories and slowly progresses into complex novels. Some points in my literacy journey have made me admire the written word but other times literacy frustrated me. These ups and downs within my story have made me the person I am today. My parents noticed that my reading was not up to par with other children in kindergarten and I was diagnosed with mild dyslexia at the age of five. As I mentioned earlier all my experience with books and reading were not bad. I was in middle school when I read two books that I really captivated my attention. One was a biography of Harriet Tubman and the story of the Underground Railroad. I admired Harriet Tubman for her selfness and dedication to freeing slaves.
This class has helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses in literature. This has allowed me to grow and realize that I am a work in progress. I am confident that by the end of this class my big issues in writing will be improved. Each assignment in this class is helping grow and is making me into the writer I know I can be.
Writing is all about progressing, and that's how I think about my writing. No one was born to be a writer but one can always improve to become a better writer. As an international student, although I started learning English at a very young age, I still found writing in English was very hard. Especially when I started learning from English professors, I realized that most of the words and phrases I learned back in China were wrong. However, during several years of English writing training, with the help of technology and a philosophy professor whom I learned from, I believe I have became a better writer. Technology transfers me to a more efficient writer by changing me from “pen-writer” to a “computer writer”, while professor Greenberg shaped me into a more precise writer.
