STATEMENT OF INTENT The myriad mysteries of science can be unraveled by the emerging technologies including Biotechnology. Science has always been my interest and forte thus, the choice of Biotechnology as my academic option was the ideal decision. I had prepared for the highly competitive entrance exam AIET to get admission into the integrated Masters Degree in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at Dr. D.Y. Patil University and secured 87th all over India rank and was proud to gain admission to this venerated university. The academic curriculum has introduced me to amazing subjects like ‘Microbiology’, ‘Molecular Biology’, ‘Biochemistry’, ‘Genetics’ and ‘Industrial Biotechnology’. Although many seminal biological events have been explained in theory during the past century, the technology to harness their potential for benefiting humankind has only been possible during the past few decades. This is testament to the great improvements in biotechnologies and I am glad to be a part of this grand scientific experience. Life as a student of Biotechnology held untold wonders and I enjoyed learning via the practical sessions in the lab, simply because I could actually implement everything I studied. At the same time, I also learned about the latest innovations in products and services using Biotechnology via courses such as ‘Commercial Aspects of Biotechnology’ and ‘Frontiers in Biotechnology’. My decision to pursue a MS in Drug regulatory Affairs is driven by my ambition to contribute to the industry, combined with my innate desire to discover and explore the subject. I would love to work under the areas of food science, microbiology, drug regulatory affairs, food and drug administration, and cell immunology. Biotechnology has the po... ... middle of paper ... ...to have an enriching educational and personal experience at the University of Northeastern. During the past several years, I have developed some unique skills and education in India. Although I am sure that I will obtain an excellent education at the University of Northeastern, I will bring my own skills, education and culture to your program. I am prepared to face the rigors and demands of a graduate program at the University of Northeastern. At the same time, I believe that I will have a unique cultural experience in the United States and get a chance to meet people from other parts of the world. I am sure that with dedication and hard work, man can achieve the unthinkable and cross the toughest of hurdles. With this spirit, I intend to carry on with my further education at the University of Northeastern. Vincy Thomas Fall 2014 http://www.cps.neu.edu/faculty/
Many people feel that biology has become more advanced than physics. Biology has in fact become the new focus of the future as we tend to use it a lot in our daily lives. The study of Biotechnology is known as the branch of molecular biology that studies the use of microorganisms to perform specific industrial processes. This study shows that our lives can be transformed.
Threshold 5 tackles the beginning of life on Earth. This is where any living things are characterized by metabolism, homeostasis, and reproduction. Over time, the genetic makeup of any living thing change so later generations being slightly different. This results into diversification and the evolution of certain species that best suit their environment. However, threshold 5 also deals with the idea of dealing with the “natural world.” It may seem that the environment is almost entirely man-made but the “natural world” is still a huge part of the environment. This can be simple as the earth on the ground, the air that people breathe in, or even the sun that provides the heat and light to the planet. However, as human technology progresses the “natural world” becomes less and less apparent in the world today.

Modern technology has taken amazing strides in the past few years. We have changed the way we deal with food production, agriculture, and many other aspects of life.. Scientists have begun utilizing these advances in technology and knowledge to gain insight as to how the human species functions. They are on the verge of manipulating the way humans relate to the natural world. This revolutionary breakthrough is what is known as Genetic Engineering. Genetic Engineering is the process of manually adding new DNA molecules into an already existing organism. A simplified version of the process works by physically removing a gene from one organism and placing it into another. This is being done in an effort to
Over the past few years scientists have been using cloning and genetic engineering. Cloning is the action of copying an organism’s (e.g. human) DNA and replicating it. This will give you exact twins. Genetic engineering is the process of adding new DNA to an organism manually. This is to add genes that were not in the organism originally. These two have some similarities but are not that alike. Most people make a fuss over both subjects saying it’s not right while others think it is an advance in technology and very useful. I am not fond of the ideas and think they can lead to big problems in our life.
Is genetic engineering right or wrong? To answer these questions we need to define genetic engineering. It is the use of biotechnology to control the genes of an organism. Genetic engineering isn’t new. It has been with us for centuries. In those days, we used it for agriculture and selective breeding of animals. Our pets, especially dogs and cats are good example of selective breeding.
My A-level choices show my interest in bio-medicine. Biology in itself had augmented my passion for this course as I have learned of the complexity and sophistication of the human body through topics such as immunity. Furthermore, acknowledging this has given me a true appreciation of the roles that scientists play in making sure that these systems work effortlessly. Chemistry has helped me become more aware of key substances used in medicine such ...

I am convinced that this opportunity will significantly heighten my research expertise, providing me with the essential competence and allowing me to presume my knowledge and potentials to an advanced level.
Synthetic biology, also known as synbio, is a new form of research that began in the year 2000. The Action Group on Erosion, Technology and Concentration (ETC Group) says that synthetic biology is bringing together “engineering and the life sciences in order to design and construct new biological parts, devices and systems that do not currently exist in the natural world’ (Synthetic Biology). Synthetic biology is aiming to create safer medicines, clean energy, and help the environment through synthetically engineered medicines, biofuels, and food. Because synthetic biology has only existed for fourteen years, there is controversy involving its engineering ethics. In this literature review, I am going to summarize and correlate the International Association for Synthetic Biology (IASB) Code of Conduct for Gene Synthesis, the impact of synthetic biology on people and the environment, and the philosophical debates.
Genetic modification is a process of altering the genetic material of an organism by the use of a method that does not occur in nature. Genetic modification involves isolating, removing and manipulating DNA, and then reinserting the DNA into the same organism or into the genetic material of another organism. Which then leads to the creation of a genetically modified organism (GMO). GMOs can be plants, animals or (most commonly) micro-organisms. The use of GMOs in agriculture is rapidly increasing, since it produces a greater yield in crops than the traditional way of farming. Even though the production of GMOs are increasing, that does not necessarily mean it is completely safe for us to consume, companies that produces genetically modified
For the biotechnology industry, the future is now. Biotech companies are producing new and improved drugs, mapping the genome, and creating artificial organs and body parts. The advent of these new products will increase the quality of life for those who have access to them. Advancements in the biotechnology field have received a lot attention by the press and publications. They have given the impression that it is almost imperative to learn about this fairly new field of study.
When studying for my Bachelor degree in Pharmacy, I received an interesting exposure to the basics of administration of Pharmaceutical industries which has further fueled my interest in learning the process of Approval from Food and Drug Administration and other laws that regulate Manufacturing, Marketing and advertising of Drugs, Pharmaceuticals and Health care devices to ensure that they are safe and effective. This has inspired me to opt for an MS program in this field and would also provide an intellectual, cultural, ethical understanding and awareness needed to become leaders and innovators in global society.
Biogenetic engineering is the ability to change or modify a genome of an organism through the use of biotechnology. We use this in order to add a new gene to an organism that it would originally would not contain. This creates a better suited organism to adapt to any form of change it may have to deal with. Biogenetic engineering works by physically entering the organism’s genome and removing it and inserting the genome into another organism this allows the organism that had received the new trait to express the new code. The steps for genetic engineering is by first finding an organism that contains a trait that is desired, then scientist will extract the DNA, then once the gene has been extracted it goes through gene cloning, this is the process in which the gene is located and copied from the different of genes that had been extracted, and sometimes the desired gene will be modified so that it will be able to perform desirelly within the organism, the transgene, which is the new gene, will be inserted into the organism, once inserted scientist will allow for breeding in order to perfect the desired gene. Biogenetic engineering allows for the manual transport of genes from one organism to the next. The genes that we use for bioengineering are beneficial since we are able to perfect this genes for an unlimited amount of usage. Bioengineering also allows a single or a few desirable genes to be inserted into an organism rather than breeding which has at times undesirable traits that might not be as beneficial to the organism as the gene that is being inserted manually in bioengineering.
So, even if GMO may have all of these "fantastic" benefits, there is still potential threat and harm it can do to the environment, health, and nature's balance. Remember, the next time you see someone, ask them if they know what GMO is and try to help the world be more aware of what GMO really is and what it can really does to both the world and environment.
