Will GMO cause the world's end?
Or help revolutionize it?
Biotechnology allows scientists to genetically engineer plants and animals for the human benefits. GMO may have had been originally developed for the people and their needs/desires, but the side effects are overlooked by the scientists and companies, causing the people to be treated like guinea pigs. Even if GMO brings awesome benefits for humans, if the side effects are to exist then there is a still a potential threat that the effects may harm the environment, health, and nature's balance.
To begin, according to A Review on Impacts of Genetically Modified Food on Human Health, GMOs offer great things like pest resistance and herbicide tolerance, which can be used to help eliminate/decrease chemical usage, limit the dangers of agricultural waste run-off, and reduce production cost (4). Due to B.t., corn will now be able to produce its own pesticides, which will help decrease the usage of chemicals in fields, causing the water supply to be no longer poisoned and less harm done to the environment. But, even in the brightest light there's always a shadow. Meaning that Bt aka Bacillus thuringiensis are highly toxic to larvae of certain insect species (5), and there is a fear that pollen from the B.t. corn will air travel to neighboring fields that may cause monarch caterpillars to perish and cease to exist(4-5). Innocent and non-targeted organisms will be harmed and murdered due to GMO. And just like some populations of mosquitos that have built a resistance against pesticides, people are concerned that insects too will evolve and build a resistance, making the pest resistance genes no longer effective(5). Actually, almost all of the crops today did not exist in the wild and with out human care, they'll cease to exist(History and Future of GMOs, 1). Scientist unnaturally inserted traits/genes from species that were to never of had intervene with one another, there had to be a specific reason as to why a banana couldn't reproduce with a chicken. And it was because that was just not the way nature was intended.
So, even if GMO may have all of these "fantastic" benefits, there is still potential threat and harm it can do to the environment, health, and nature's balance. Remember, the next time you see someone, ask them if they know what GMO is and try to help the world be more aware of what GMO really is and what it can really does to both the world and environment.

According to Approximately, 53% of the crops are engineered for herbicide tolerance, with another 33% for stacked traits, usually including herbicide tolerance. 14% are insect resistant using the Bt trait. Bacillus thurengiensis (Bt) is a spore forming bacterium that produces crystals protein, which are toxic to many species of insects. GM crops and their associated herbicides can harm birds, insects, amphibians, marine ecosystems, and soil organisms. They are reducing biodiversity, polluting water resources, and are making environments unsustainable for wildlife. A study published in Nature, one of the world’s leading scientific journals, has announced that Bt corn has contaminated indigenous varieties of corn tested in Oaxaca, Mexico. it was found that Bt corn destroyed the larvae of the monarch butterfly, raising well-grounded fears that many other natural plant and animal life may be impacted in the same way. The term GM foods or GMO (genetically-modified organisms) is most commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest molecular biology techniques (Whitman, 2000). These plants have been modified in the laboratory to offer desired traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. Also, genetic engineering techniques have been applied to create plants with the exact desired trait very rapidly and accurately. For example, this is done by the geneticist isolating the gene responsible for drought tolerance and inserts it into another plant. The new genetically-modified plant will now have gained drought tolerance as well.
GMOs, when utilized correctly make food easier to grow, creates a larger output of meat products as well as create crops resistant to pests and disease. GM crops have become easily grown and spread across the world because of their adapted nature, enabling certain crops to grow in regions they simply couldn’t before. In this way many farmers have become heavily dependant on GMOs to keep up with the increasing standards in production and also to be able to continue growing their crops in a cost-effective manner. This different way of farming has been good for farmers by creating these new organisms already resistant to the cold and the ability to keep insects away. Consumers in America have been eating GMOs since 1996, when they went on the market. There are benefits to genetically modifying crop plants, as it improves the crop quality and increases yield, affecting the economy and developing countries. But there are also negative effects from GMOs. Consumption of GMOs has various health effects on both body systems of animals and humans. GMOs also affect the environment, ecosystems and other animal species. The cons outweigh the pros in the case of GMOs.

Genetically modified foods could cross-pollinate with other plants and create an entirely new species. In addition, there is the danger of biotech-resistant weeds and insects evolving. GMO’s have the potential to alter ecosystems in significant ways. Companies are currently engineering salmon, tilapia, carp, and other fish to promote faster growth or to provide resistance to certain diseases. Aquaculture farms are located in oceans and other bodies of water and the fish escape the nets regularly, ecologists worry that genetically modified fish could breed with natural fish.
But opponents for GMO continue to fight and protest the safety of any GMO’s and are we truly ready for them, currently agricultural plants are one of the most frequently used examples of genetically modified organisms, some benefits of genetic engineering in agriculture are increased crop yields, which advocates believe will reduced the costs of food and reduce the need for pesticides. They also believe that they enhance the nutrient composition of food quality and is resistance to pests and disease, many feel that using GMO’s can benefit the world 's growing
Thirdly, biodiversity is the material basis of human survival, agricultural biodiversity provides not only basic food and industrial raw materials as human beings, but also to maintain the ecosystem also plays an important role. Genetically modified crops undermine the diversity of agricultural products. As the price of GM foods is cheap, traditional food have no price advantage, fewer and fewer farmers plant traditional agricultural products.

My Controversy is about the benefits and risks of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). All of the GMOs are those materials/organisms that have had their DNA or molecular structures genetically modified using genetic engineering techniques. Most GMOs have in some way had their genetic structure altered, some of these may be in the form of plants, animals, bacteria and some virus’s.
Bt corn, which is a genetically modified strain of corn which kills insects who ingest it, is a highly controversial crop. Certain studies that have taken place in prestigious colleges, such as Cornell, have shown it to kill monarch butterflies and damage the ecosystem. Other researchers believe it is highly beneficial in increasing crop yield and also claim it is more effective than pesticides in reducing Corn Borers. There exist many benefits and drawbacks to the use of Bt corn.
Some genetic scientists have been presenting the complex process of GMOs to the public as a simple operation. They place it in our foods and tell you the positive, but whst are the negative effects? There’s no telling what could happen in the future if we consume too much. GMOs are dangerous for the body,plants,and the environment. They could destroy natural crops, fruits and vegetable, have terrible side effects on the human body, causes allergic reactions, and it also makes the body resistant to antibiotics.
With all of the controversy surrounding GMO foods, a topic that always arises is the subject of labeling. Labeling has been a matter of discussion for years and surprisingly, a consensus has not been reached. In the labeling argument, big organizations that oppose labeling claim that mandatory labels would increase costs. Supporters of labels meanwhile, argue in favor of the consumers’ right to know of just what it is that they are consuming. The debate of cost over right to know seems to be what fuels the persistent war between supporters and opposers of labeling. While there is huge opposition, labeling GM foods is a necessity and needs to become a reality in America.
The subject matter of my paper revolves around the application of genetically modified organisms (GMO) in modern societies. A GMO is an organism whose genetic material has been modified by artificial means. This involves the addition, the loss or the mutation of a specific gene. The main value conflict surrounding the topic of genetic engineering is whether innovation is more important than the sanctity of life. As humans alter the genetic material of an organism, they ultimately violate the natural order of life that is said to be sacred and to remain untouched.
