Over the past few years scientists have been using cloning and genetic engineering. Cloning is the action of copying an organism’s (e.g. human) DNA and replicating it. This will give you exact twins. Genetic engineering is the process of adding new DNA to an organism manually. This is to add genes that were not in the organism originally. These two have some similarities but are not that alike. Most people make a fuss over both subjects saying it’s not right while others think it is an advance in technology and very useful. I am not fond of the ideas and think they can lead to big problems in our life.
Cloning and genetic engineering are very different, however do share some similarities. When a scientist clones an organism he works with the DNA of the organism found in the cells. The cell is replicated with the DNA inside the cell. This allows two almost identical organisms to form. Genetic engineering also deals with DNA. When adding a new trait to something, you must add it to the DNA where genes are located. Both, cloning and genetic engineering, work with DNA.

Cloning is a DNA sequence, such as a gene, that is transferred from one organism to another and replicated by genetic engineering techniques. This means to reproduce or propagate asexually and some sexually. Cloning is made when you have several embryos and you try to duplicate them to produce more eggs which is called SCNT. SCNT (Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer) is used so that they can take a piece of DNA from an egg and transfer it to another egg after the nucleus has been eliminated by an ultra violet beam. This technique is really hard to accomplish but can be done by well experienced scientists. According to Vos (2004), “In 1984, Steen Willadsun cloned a sheep from embryo cells, which were the predecessor to Dolly’s method of cloning.” In 2002 Boisselier chemist and CEO of Clonaid, cloned Eve the first baby to be cloned and was 7lbs; she is known to be a healthy and happy baby. Eve was created by an America woman of 31 years old who donated her DNA for a cloning process. The woman didn’t give her name, but her embryo was implanted and then gestated to the baby, with that it would make an identical twin as an exact genetic duplicate of the mother. The reason why she decided to donate her DNA was because her husband was infertile of resorted cloning.

Genes are, basically, the blueprints of our body which are passed down from generation to generation. Through the exploration of these inherited materials, scientists have ventured into the recent, and rather controversial, field of genetic engineering. It is described as the "artificial modification of the genetic code of a living organism", and involves the "manipulation and alteration of inborn characteristics" by humans (Lanza). Like many other issues, genetic engineering has sparked a heated debate. Some people believe that it has the potential to become the new "miracle tool" of medicine. To others, this new technology borders on the realm of immorality, and is an omen of the danger to come, and are firmly convinced that this human intervention into nature is unethical, and will bring about the destruction of mankind (Lanza).

The only thing that may be the same about the clone and the original is the DNA that the original obtains. The clone might look different and act different. For example, when two cats were cloned the clone of the original was different than the other. Different temperaments, Different Appearance Etc. But the only thing the same about them was that their DNA was the same. The process of cloning first takes place when the nucleus of the donor egg is then removed with the empty egg, the clone source DNA is injected into the donor’s egg. Next the egg rapidly divides, repeating this process over and over into a multicellular clump. Next cells start to become a group and eventually form a specific organ such as heart, liver, and kidney. Stem cells are harvested from the embryos of 100 cells or more and finally the embryos continue to grow in size and in complexity resulting in an identical replica in genes of the original.
Genetic engineering gives the power to change many aspects of nature and could result in a lot of life-saving and preventative treatments. Today, scientists have a greater understanding of genetics and its role in living organisms. However, if this power is misused, the damage could be very great. Therefore, although genetic engineering is a field that should be explored, it needs to be strictly regulated and tested before being put into widespread use. Genetic engineering has also, opened the door way to biological solutions for world problems, as well as aid for body malfunctions. I think that scientists should indeed stop making genetic engineering for humans, because it will soon prove to be devastating to the human race. It would cause rivalries and tension among different kinds of genetically engineered humans for dominance and power.
