Mike K. Essay on equal pay in the work place. In 1963, President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law, making it unlawful to discriminate against a worker on the basis of sex. Since that time, the wage gap between men and women in the United States has narrowed by just 15 cents, now being 74 cents, as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau. Pay equality is most prevalent for the 16 to 24 age group, in which women earn more than 90 percent of what men do; however, the gap becomes 75 percent in the 25 to 54 year old group – those at the height of their careers and life responsibilities. A number of factors have contributed to the gap between men’s and women’s wages. These include: occupational segregation of women into low paying jobs; lower levels of unionization for women and attitudinal barriers that have kept women from achieving equality in the workplace and undervaluation for women’s work. The Equal Pay Act (part of the Fair Labor Standards Act), forbids employers to compensate women differently for jobs that are “substantially equal”, that is, almost identical. Traditionally, women have worked in different occupations than men; these occupations tend to be substantially different, pay less and confer less authority. Equity means fairness and justice. Pay equity programs throughout the world attempt to legislate and regulate the elimination of systemic gender-based wage discrimination and to ensure ongoing systems that will maintain equitable wage relationships over time. Pay equity programs attempt to address the undervaluation for work traditionally or historically done by women. Pay equity (also referred to as “comparable worth”) programs require a gender-neutral analysis of comparative work. A variety of very different jobs are compared based on a composite of the skill, effort and responsibility of a job and the conditions under which the job is generally done. The comparison determines the relative worth of those jobs to the achievement of a firm’s objectives, under the proposition that equal contribution merits equal compensation. Where female-dominated jobs in the workplace are found to be of equal or comparable value to male-dominated jobs but paid below the level of the male jobs or payline, then all employees in those female-dominated jobs are entitled to receive pay equity adjustments. But how are these adjustments to be determined in a workplace that already subjectively undervalues the effort and contribution of women and minorities?
Though any pay disparity between women and men is a pressing issue, the “wage gap” is much more complicated than people believe because of misleading statistics, unaccounted for variables, and the different social and economic choices of men and women. In my experience I have not dealt with The Equal Pay Act nor, was I educated enough to be aware of the detail that this act is consisted of. I was working for a well know profitable bank which I will not name or maybe I should. The situation was, as a top employee, I had more responsibilities than the other employees. The business consisted of both female and male, the ratio was one out of eight were males, therefore the women were dominating in employees and in management. The majority of employees were handling regular customer service calls. I myself dealt with Small Business, Home Equity, Consumer Loans, and the Spanish service calls. I received the same pay as the other employees and was not able to advance into management with the recognition of the extra duties that I was performing.
The wage gap not only represents gender discrimination in the workplace, it also reflects the ongoing issue of racial discrimination. While white women do typically earn less than white men, they out earn the majority of female colored workers in America. The average African American female makes only 64 cents for the white man’s dollar. Additionally, Hispanic women receive only 54 cents to their white male coworker’s dollar (Hegewisch para. 9).
One problem that Americans are facing is the inequality between men and women, whether it is in everyday life or in a professional atmosphere. One step that has been taken toward equality was introduced with the Equal Pay Act of 1963, signed by President John F. Kennedy. This law was the first affecting the amount of job opportunities available for women and allowing them to work in traditionally male dominated fields. For many years in United States, equal salary pay for women has been a major issue that women have been fighting for decades. This began back in World War II, when the National Labor Board urged equalize the salary rates for women with the same rates that males were getting of the same professions. (Rowen) Although, traditionally most women do not work to provide for there family and there are not so many independent women during World War II. After World War II more women lost their jobs to veterans returning to the workforce. Women in the workforce after the war have been discriminated ever since. Due to various countries initiatives to shrink the wage inequality between men and women wages in the work force, the gap has narrowed, respectively, which may have helped form such opinion. However, stating that the gender pay gap does not exist in today’s society, anywhere, is completely unlikely. Seeing that the gap has loosened its grasp in the working world, in other countries, the gap between pay has widened or remained stagnant. One cannot help but wonder why the gap remains consistent, even with such substantial progress made in countries where the gap has decreased. Reasons as to why gender wage gap exist so heavily, slightly differs from country to country, but the overall effect from the wage disparity is wholly evident.

It is very important to be concerned about the issue because it is constantly increasing throughout the United States. It upsets me that women are paid less than men because women have the same ability and work ethic as men do, but they are looked at differently. According to AAUW, women make 77 percent of what men make. This rate hasn’t changed since 2002 (Hill, 2013). Statistics show that women will never make as much as men due to the thought of never being comparable to men (Williams, 2013).
This includes men and women who perform the same job in the same establishment, using equal skills, effort and responsibility (The Equal Pay Act of 1963). While there is a law in place, this does not stop employers from wage discrimination. Typically, employees are not supposed to discuss their pay openly with other employees, discussing pay is usually a terminating offence. This rule leaves the employer with discretion of wages. In jobs where the occupation is a female dominated occupation, such as school teachers, women earn $981, compared to men who earn $1,126. In a male dominated occupation such as software development, men earn $1,863 per week compared to women making $1,553 (Hegewisch, Phil, Williams-Baron). I remember when I was living in Connecticut about 10 years ago, this was a nurse I love to see when I had my doctor’s appointments. She was a wonderful lady and a great nurse. She was one of those cool nurses, likes the ones who makes you laugh while she’s giving to a shot, making sure you don’t feel any pain. Her name was Miss. Sue and until this day I go and visit her at the same doctor’s office she was at 10 years ago. I always asked her questions about how it is to be a nurse still after many years. She always tells me “it’s amazing when you really love helping people”. She knows that I’m to school to become a Register Nurse and she tells me I’ll make a great one. In general, I would love to help somebody who is sick or ill. To know that there are people like myself that are in the medical or in hospitals caring and helping people interest me. I want to learn way more about being a nurse in the future so I can be a great nurse one
