The Cotton Gin In the late 1700’s the slave population in the United States had decreased. Before the invention of the cotton gin the South, which could only make money by farming, was loosing money because it didn’t have a major crop to export to England and the North besides tobacco and rice. However, these crops could be grown elsewhere. Cotton was the key because it couldn’t be grown in large amounts in other places, but only one type of cotton that could be cleaned easily. This was long-staple cotton. Another problem arose; long-staple cotton only could be grown along the coast. There was another strain of cotton that until then could not be cleaned easily so it wasn’t worth growing. The cotton gin was the solution to this problem. With the invention of the cotton gin short stemmed cotton could be cleaned easily making cotton a valued export and it could be grown anywhere in the south. The era of the “Cotton Kingdom” began with this invention leading into an explosion in the necessity of slaves. The cotton gin was a machine that cleaned cotton, especially short-stemmed cotton. The cotton gin consisted of spiked teeth on a boxed revolving cylinder. When it was turned by a crank, the cotton fiber was pulled through small slotted openings to separate the seeds from the lint. While that was happening a rotating brush, operated by belts and pulleys, removed the ropey lint from the spikes. A machine had been invented before to clean long-staple cotton called a “Charka.” It was invented in Ancient India. Eli Whitney had no idea that a machine existed while he made his machine. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793. Eli Whitney was an inventor and a mechanical engineer. He was born in Westboro, Mass. He went to Yale... ... middle of paper ... ...hat Britain didn’t need as much cotton from the south. The problem was that the South only had two markets that bought cotton from them, the North and Britain. Since Britain didn’t need that much cotton at all, the South’s only buyer was the North. So they were depending on the North to buy their goods. The North took advantage of this, since the South had no other way of making a substantial amount of money besides cotton farming. The North decided that they could haggle the price of cotton down low. This made the south very very mad. This and combined with the slave issue eventually led to the Civil War. The invention of the cotton gin helped speed up the growth of the United States, of course with the help of Eli Whitney who helped the United States in many other ways. As a result, cotton became the cheapest and most widely used textile fabric in the world.
Eli Whitney was the inventor of the cotton gin and a pioneer in the mass production of cotton. Whitney was born in Westboro , Massachusetts., on Dec. 8, 1765, and died on Jan. 8, 1825. He graduated from Yale College in 1792. By April 1793, Whitney had designed and constructed the cotton gin, a machine that automated the separation of cottonseed from the short-staple cotton fiber.
“European and New England purchases soared from 720,000 bales in 1830, to 2.85 million bales in 1850, to nearly 5 million in 1860” (Yafa). Cotton production renewed the need for slavery after the tobacco market declined in the late 18th century (Locks pg737-747, Eichhorn). “The more cotton grown, the more slaves were needed to pick the crop. By 1860, on the eve of the American Civil War, cotton accounted for almost 60% of American exports, representing a total value of nearly $200 million a year”
The modern cotton gin was created by Eli Whitney in 1793, and patented a year later in 1794.
New growth, inventions, and expansions of the north and south. There has been a new invention of steamboats for more, and better transportation. Steamboats could carry goods, and passengers faster along inland waterways canals faster than flatboats or sail powered boats. Steamboats could Carry quite a bit more goods, and people because steamboats were working off of steam so it wasn't powered by man(appleby 312). Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin that removed the seeds from cotton fiber which makes it easier to make cloth. In 1739 Eli Whitney of Massachusetts invented the cotton gin. New inventions that were helpful, the cotton gin was a simple machine that quickly and efficiently removed the seeds from the cotton fiber and that made it more
On December 8, 1765, the famous Eli Whitney was born. He started working on the farm at a very young age. He grew very intelligent and began to like repairing and creating things. That was the beginning of his great inventions.
Eli Whitney was born in Westborough, Massachusetts on December, 8 1765. He worked on his father’s farm and his goal was to study law. He taught school to continue his education and ended graduating from Yale College in 1782 (“Eli Whitney Facts.”) Whitney moved to Georgia and accepted an invitation to stay with Catherine Greene on her plantation. While there Whitney learned about the struggles that cotton farmers faced with short staple cotton. Soon after Whitney invented the cotton gin which helped cotton farmer everywhere (“Cotton Gin.”)
The first impact cotton had on society was the slaves. This affected the slaves because more were needed to work and this led people to be able to take better care of them because they had more cotton profit (SC Journey, 121). The plantation system and how it works is our next topic. The plantation became part of the south's culture and the plantations became its own community (most things needed to keep everything running smoothly was found on the farm). Slaves were alway under the watch of a master, driver, or overseer of some sort. Slaves were often disciplined by their masters for a number of reasons but some slave owners weren’t as cruel. The society of the north led a process of trying to industrialize while the south wanted plantations to grow. There were small incentives for investors who invested in plantations. Most plantations had a substantial crop but also had small amounts of livestock. During the early 1800’s cotton was at its all time high and cotton farmers became very wealthy , but in 1819 the cotton crop was at a ruin and an all time low. This caused the farmers to want to leave to find a better place to plant , such as Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi (SC Journey 126). This caused the people to want to introduce industry to South
Cotton Gin this was away to make the slaves more useable as the they just had to pick the cotton and the gin would remove the seeds and one single device could produce up to 50 pounds of cleaned cotton in on day
In the North, although farms were still present, they were small and produce was only sold locally. (Chapter 8 Section 1) Instead, the North went through the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution was the transition to new manufacturing processes. They invested money into business using the economic system of capitalism. One main industry in the North was textiles. The textile mills relied on cotton that was planted in the South. Further, the South only focused on farming crops such as tobacco, hemp, wheat, vegetables, rice, and sugarcane. However, the main crop was cotton. Because the North needed so much of it, most plantation owners in the South turned to slave labor to plant and harvest cotton. Also, with the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney, the demand for slaves increased to make up for more cotton. Building an industry in the South was difficult because of the lack of capital or money to invest into a business. In a sense, the North and South depended on each other to make money and stay
In the 1700’s Agriculture was very simple, but was a very long process of production. Most things were done by hand in the 1700’s. A man by the name of Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin and this invention would clean cotton much faster than the average man. This machine helped decrease the amount of slaves because the farmers would only have to have enough slaves to run the cotton through the machine (Moore). In March of 1794 the cotton gin was patented (Smith). At the start of the civil war 80% of the cotton was grown in the south on the southern plantations (Moore).
Have you ever heard of the cotton plantation? Well, if you haven’t today i'm going to talk about the story of a young man who was a slave and worked at the cotton plantation in the 1800s. One of the young men that helped at the cotton plantation was . He was one of 4 million slaves that helped with the cotton plantation. The cotton plantation was basically growing and harvesting the cotton from different fields for either
New inventions were being produced to make work more efficient, cost effective, and worker friendly, all thanks to the embargo imposed by Jefferson which bolstered the self production rather than importation economy of America. In the late 1700s to the late 1800s many inventions were created that bolstered the ability of the industrial industry. some of them include the automatic flour mill, this machine completed the entire process of turning grain into flour without the slow process of doing it by hand. The cotton gin, another important invention separated the raw cotton from the seeds and other debris, this machine increased the productivity of cotton manufacturing by 5000% (Gray). Lastly is mechanized textile manufacturing, textile manufacturing came into the US when Samuel Slater came the US disguised as a laborer, he had the designs for a textile machine in his head and set out to create a factory for this high demand product, after beginning his factory Slater jumpstarted the factorization of the US. With the creation of these new factories lead to the unemployment of skilled craftsmen who originally created products now mass produced and became workers for the factories. these skilled craftsmen soon demanded better working conditions and better wages and formed the first worker unions (History.com-Labor Movement). These unions helped protect worker wages and working
Me and Eli have been friends since our twenties, and we have invented many things. Take the Cotton Gin for example. I remember us staying up late to make something to make farming cotton easier.
Throughout history each major technological advancement has been able to significantly change the society in which it was introduced to, to demonstrate, the cotton gin was a valuable tool which allowed the process of picking cotton to be accelerated and allowed it to become a more fruitful activity. The invention of the cotton gin affected the American society greatly as it was able to advance cotton as a commodity which allowed the economy to flourish, but it also had other effects as it emphasized the germaneness of slavery. In the 21st century technology has evolved into a tool which has enormously guided the
Looking back at the history of the United States of America from the first patent issued in 1790 to today, we can see how every advance in technology seemingly leads to the next one. Starting with the cotton gin, this simple invention allowed for much faster processing time, allowing for increase in profits.
