“Real men don’t cry, only wimps do!” Throughout our lives we have each been subjected to comments as to what we should and should not do and how we should act based on our gender. How does one define gender? Are they really defining “gender” or sex? “Sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that tend to define men and women.” According to the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute, gender refers to a description of masculinity or femininity. “Although we normally refer to gender when we are talking about people or classifying them into a specific group, there are other things that can be classified as gendered.” Such as the things one says, their emotional outlook, personal characteristics, organizations, power structures, …show more content…
People face the disadvantages of gender inequality through healthcare, education, political representation, labor market, and etc. As stated by Women on Boards and Chartered Secretaries of Australia, “Gender equality is not a woman’s issue, it is a human issue. It affects us all.” Gender inequality still exists simply because of power and status. Although women have been making changes over the past twenty years or so, it’s still not enough to get out of gender inequality. According to an article, full-time working women earn just 77 cents for every dollar a man earns (White House Government). That wage gap is simply saying that men are entitled to more than the women received. Some do not realize the problems that are caused by the wage gap between women and men. Women are making up nearly half the workforce but they are still bringing home less money. By them bringing home less money and with the increase in prices for goods, they barely have enough to cover their needs. The workplaces need to adapt. They need to look at men and women as a whole. We need to measure women for they can bring intellectually and their talents and stop looking at just their physical appearance. We are lessening the woman and continuing to allow them to feel inferior. Women are just as smart as men as far as educational achievement. I think with the workplace not adapting and then with women carrying the load of the household, that is what makes it hard for them to come up. The biggest factors in gender inequality are the gender stereotypes that have been placed on women and men. Stereotypes are hard to break and although we try to change them we still tend to engage in stereotyping from time to time. Gender is not about the biological differences between men and women but rather the behavioral, cultural and psychological traits typically associated with one sex. Gender is socially constructed meaning it 's culturally specific, it 's learned and shared through gender socialization. What it means to be a woman or man is going to differ based on the culture, geographical location, and time. What it meant to be a woman in the US in the 19th century is different than what it means to be a woman in the 21st century. As cultures evolve over time so are the ideals of what it means to be man or woman.

The word gender refers to a general classification of human beings into male and female with socially and culturally constructed characteristics, behaviors, attributes and roles preconceived and labelled as appropriate for each class. The society and culture today have placed human beings in a box which to a large extent dictates how we act in the world.
The clusters of social definitions used to identify persons by gender are collectively known as “femininity” and “masculinity.” Masculine characteristics are used to identify persons as males, while feminine ones are used as signifiers for femaleness. People use femininity or masculinity to claim and communicate their membership in their assigned, or chosen, sex or gender. Others recognize our sex or gender more on the basis of these characteristics than on the basis of sex characteristics, which are usually largely covered by clothing in daily life.
When women are actually given the same jobs as men, they may be paid the same but typically, they are not able to reach the higher positions in the company that men do. Even with their 77 cents to a man’s dollar, “women still tend to bear a larger responsibility for child care and other household matters within families” (Mazorelle). Women still get paid 77 cents to every dollar that a man makes. This not only perpetuates sexism in an extremely obvious way, it is also one of the most harmful. While being catcalled, or subtly put down can be a detriment to women’s psyche, the wage gap is harmful to a women’s physical and emotional well being. Most people say that in order to make a big career change, the person changing jobs should have enough money saved to live on for a full year. This is a pretty logical idea, however, this is something that is much easier for men to accomplish, given that they are paid a higher wage. They have the ability to put money away, whereas it is more likely that a women is going to have to spend all her wages just on living. She won’t be able to leave a job, even if she hates it, simply because she can not afford to. A man with her same qualifications may not have to worry about this due to the fact that he has on average 23 more cents per every dollar, than she does. This to me seems like the root of sexism, and one of the first things we as a society needs to fix in order to help woman feel more equal in the world.
Social systems tend to reinforce oppression because they are usually static and do not change much over time. Social systems such as family and media are highly problematic for women because they contribute to the gender roles, expectations, and norms. Institutions further gender inequity as it subdues women and nurtures men. Feminism aims to improve the social situation for women, including abolishing institutionalized oppression and inequity and reforming institutions.
Being a feminist today has altered from a political position to a more general position. Contemporary feminist is shaped by the past, but now is integrated in popular culture by popular figures. The definition of feminism is the belief of social, political, and economic rights, especially with regards of equality of the sexes. The first reason for gender inequality is income disparities. The reason for income disparities is because men are getting more median wage than women. Women are often paid less for the same thing as men only because they are women. So the realization had once been deliberately chosen less high paying careers than men. Some of these jobs would be secretarial, clerical to explain why men in a particular company would make more money than a women in the same company. That may have been true once, but no longer that way in today’s economy. Now that more women are holding mid-level management jobs the career choices by men are ambitions to women’s pay disparities.

The sexism and inequality intertwined with the work force is still a big problem today. Unlike in the early 1900’s, there is closer to an equal ratio of men to women in the work force. But women are still more present in typical jobs such as secretaries, nurses, and waitresses, whereas men are more present in jobs such as construction, CEO’s, and politicians. I experienced something similar at my place of work. I’m a barista at my local coffee shop, and all of my coworkers are female. Any time my boss is hiring, there are very few male resumes that come in. But if there are any mechanical problems, the first person she calls is her husband or father to come and fix it. This clear division between men and women is one of the causes of the gender gap. The gender gap is the difference in pay between men and women who work the same job.
