While in English 111 we completed an annotated bibliography, about 5 or so quizzes, a group project, and three different types of papers. It is my hope that while you are reading this letter, you will gain an understanding of the work I have completed in my English 111 class. Below I discuss the three different papers and classwork assignments I completed in my English 111 at Germanna Community College.
The first paper I wrote in my English 111 class was a compare and contrast paper about gender roles. The instructions of this assignment was to choose a social protest song, whether it be about war or the government, from a different time era (60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s) and juxtapose it to a current song that addresses a comparable topic. I chose the song “Born a Girl” by Manic Street Preaches and “Little Game” by Benny or Ben J. Pierce. of becoming transgender because I wanted to choose a topic that no one else would cover in the class and is a growing issue in the United States. It is often overlooked due to the fact others don’t understand the topic or because many don’t feel comfortable talking about the subject. Transgender, also called transsexual or transvestite, is defined as “of, relating to, or being a person (as a transsexual or transvestite) who identifies with or expresses a gender identity that differs from the one which corresponds to the person's sex at birth.” (Merriam-Webster.com). I spent a lot of time going through the weekly folders and trying to make this essay the best. However, the thesis statement was not about the music but instead it focused on the topic of gender roles. Consequently, because of this it effected my grade on the paper. My strengths in this essay were my details I included in the introduction. However, my weaknesses in the paper were that I started to turn away from the topic. The second paper I wrote in English 111 class a narrative paper, which I chose to write about my struggle with depression and bullying in middle school. I personally hate narrative papers to begin with because I prefer research papers over narrative papers any day of the week. Since the narrative paper was so personal I held off on writing it till close to the deadline of when the paper was due. Thus, resulting in the paper sounding like a middle school student wrote it. I should have used more imagery throughout the paper and gone into further details than I did. The third paper I wrote in my English 111 class was the persuasive paper.
This was my favorite paper to write out of all three of them because I could choose any topic that interested me. However, I do not do so well at writing papers to argument my point or topic since I have never had to write one till now. I chose to do my paper on organ donation and I was trying to convince my readers to become or consider becoming organ donors since there is such a shortage of donors and an increasing number of people being added to the transplant waiting list every day every ten minutes. In the paper, I included the pros and cons about being an organ donor, facts and statistics throughout the paper, the difference between the types of donation, and how to register to be an organ donor and/or how to register to donate your body to science so that medical students can become good future doctors and nurses. My strengths in this essay were all the facts I included throughout the paper and my weakness in this paper was trying to argue my
point. Lastly, we did a group project that was related to our first paper. Emma and I focused on gender roles and women’s standards. We included in the project history of the two songs we each chose from our essay. In order to prepare for the presentation on November eleventh, both Emma and I talked and worked on the presentation about “Gender Roles & Women’s Standards” in class but also met up outside of class at Panera in Central Park to finalize the presentation for the next day. In my individual free time, I practiced what I was going to say and how I was going to say it. However, when I got up to present the presentation I didn’t say everything I was supposed to say, such as more detail about the “Little Game” music video, since I got anxious and nervous with others staring at me. I’m not good at speaking in front of a crowd whether it is only two people or a class full of twenty people. I didn’t struggle with putting the information into the PowerPoint or finding the history of the songs and artist, other than “Born a Girl” by Manic Street Preachers; I just struggled with standing up in front of the class and discussing my contribution or part of the presentation. The aspect of the project that I cared most about or thought about the most was the song choice and the information that should be put in my section of the presentation as well as how it should be organized in the slides of the presentation. In conclusion, my writing has seemed to have improved, but I still am struggling with grammar and being more descriptive in my writing. The quizzes we took in the class were a great way to boost our grades and improve our writing in the area I am practically struggling in such as grammar. Overall, in the class I meet a new friend name Emma and improved on my writing with grammar errors and being more descriptive. In the class I am most proud of my persuasive paper because I feel I chose a good topic that I had interest in and I looked up a lot of facts and statistics to put in the paper.
In English 1102, I was exposed to a variety of different genres, including, argumentative research paper, an annotated bibliography, an analytical paper, and a workplace specific piece. Entering this class the majority of papers I had written were all analytical, and in this class we went above and beyond the basic 5 paragraph essay. Though each paper had a different genre and style, I learned that each project was similar in composition.
English 122 has been a challenging class for me to learn about my writing and researching techniques. This essay is about how the assignments help me with my writing and which assignments are challenging for me.
The purpose of English 111 is to help students create a foundation of writing skills so that they may better succeed at UW through their understanding of writing and how they can improve their writing skills. In order to achieve this goal students are expected to write essays throughout the course that will help them become more proficient in the four Course Goals set up to guide students in their learning process. The first course goal is that students be able to recognize strategies employed by writers in different forms of literary works. Students practice this skill through the reading and discussion of many different forms of literature in order to learn how writing strategies are used throughout these texts. As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
I have learned a lot so far in English 1101, about myself and about writing. I have discovered that it is sometimes difficult for me to find topics to write about, but once I get an idea it is very easy for me to start writing. English has always been one of the subjects that I tend to struggle with, but this class has helped me realize that I actually enjoy writing. I have never really been able to write a lot about topics of my choice in the past. I am more accustomed to writing papers related to one specific topic. This class gives you a prompt to write about, but you are generally able to expand on that and choose your own topic as long as it relates to the prompt.
My analysis over the development of my writing throughout this semester. I will assess many aspects of my experiences with English 1301 up to this point in the semester. I will explain the ways by which I have blossomed as a writer during this time. I will provide brief examples of my work to show what I am basing the evaluation of my writing on. What my conceptions of writing were, at the start of, the semester and compare it to what they are now. I will clarify how my work this semester reflects the concepts of writing and reading we have been working on and studying in class. I will tell about what and how particular reading assignments have been influential in my growth of creative ideas. Lastly, my interpretation of what it means to be a writer, and how my experiences this semester has influenced my opinion on writing.
Over the course of five weeks we’ve had to write three essays (four if you include this one). With every essay I’ve written I have improved my writing process. Having the chance to practice my writing skills in English 102 has made me a better all-around writer. From the beginning of this course, I knew I had a few major issues that I needed to overcome to improve my writing. The biggest being my issues with punctuation, specifically comma splices. Comma splices are something that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around. Although I have gotten better at recognizing comma splices they still seem to sneak in to my writing.
Central Idea: my central idea are what organ donation is and how it works, arguments against organ donation and refutations, and how to become an organ donor and benefits of organ donation
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, I walked in to English not knowing what to expect. English 111 was boring at times but in many ways helpful. College Composition I main objective is to teach students the fundamentals of academic writing and critical thinking. Aside from learning how to academically write, recognizing grammatical errors, tone, and different styles such as MLA, APA, and CMS, are some other things learned in the course. This essay will be evaluating the book as a whole, self-reflections, essays, my strengths and weaknesses and my professor.
Overall, I believe that English 101 greatly impacted my writing performance for the better. With the help of multiple in class assignments and different styles of papers, I was able to fully broaden my writing skills and understanding. When I look back on this courses learning outcomes and course keywords, I feel as if I achieved a great number of them through the many writing assignments given to me. With a semesters worth of new found knowledge I was also able to reflect and revise one of my previous papers written in this course. If it was not for English 101, I feel my writing skills would be greatly set back.
With my first semester as a college student coming to an end, I can honestly say I have gained so much knowledge and this has been a major eye opening experience. By being in your English 111 class, I have learned a great deal about myself as a writer and a communicator. English used to be a subject I took for granted because I always considered it to be easy and there wasn’t much to it. You have helped me realize that in order to write a good paper, it is important to have a deeper understanding of the many structures and usages; as well as a better understanding of yourself and your audience. In what seems like such a short time, I have learned about rhetorical knowledge, the writing process, oral communication, critical thinking/reading/writing, and digital technology.
Before I came to English 101 I was more of a raw writer than most people. Although I would write my papers filled with great content, I would also have many problems with my grammer and organization. Throughout my time in this class I have developed and trained multiple areas of my writing. Some of the areas that I have improved the most have been grammer, organization, and MLA format. These areas have lead to an evolution in my writing that has given me a new level of understanding in English. Which has provided me with the skills that will endow me to achieve success in english 102.
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
I want to thank you for being a great teacher for me. I want to till you how I enjoy being in your class in this session. You have made my session very special for many reasons, and I liked the activities that you made for us, that makes your class very special. Also, the activities makes the materials easier to understand. When I take English 105 class, I expect that my skills in writing academic essays will improve, but I found that I learned new skills and improved others. For example, I improved in summaries educational articles easily. I always struggle finding the main idea of academic articles, or doing summary for it, but your class helped me improved my skills in scamming and finding the main points of articles.
