I want to thank you for being a great teacher for me. I want to till you how I enjoy being in your class in this session. You have made my session very special for many reasons, and I liked the activities that you made for us, that makes your class very special. Also, the activities makes the materials easier to understand. When I take English 105 class, I expect that my skills in writing academic essays will improve, but I found that I learned new skills and improved others. For example, I improved in summaries educational articles easily. I always struggle finding the main idea of academic articles, or doing summary for it, but your class helped me improved my skills in scamming and finding the main points of articles. My critical thinking
improved as well. It is improved by observe, ask questions, gathering information, and apply these information. The activities helped me so much to improve my critical thinking. An example of activity is the marshmallow and drawing the image. The first activity which is marshmallow, which shows how the information should be clear and simple for the readers, and makes sure that my writing is easy to understand by many people. The second activity which is drawing picture, in this activity I learned to see the point from different views before I start to write about any subject. I chose Photo essay, advertisement analysis, and research paper to shows how I improve and learned new skills. I chose these three projects because it shows how much I improved in English. First example, in photo essay I wrote about general information with a general photos, and that was not the point. I should do it more specific as a personal experience, and talked more clearly about the pictures that I chose. As a result, I improved my literacy in this project. Second, in advertisement analysis there wasn’t enough information in one of my examples, and I should make sure that I add clear and good information. Also, I missed talking about the audience for the advertising. That makes my critical thinking developed. Finally research paper, I first started with an observation and question. Then I started doing research about the topic. After that I felt bored and not interested in this topic. I chose another topic that seems interesting to me and I did my research about it, it was really interesting topic. I had difficulties with the introduction in background information. I should add some historical information about the topic. This project developed my critical thinking a lot, and helped me to improve my writing.
English 102 demands my full attention as much as humanly possible. From the first day I walked into your classroom this semester, I knew I was going to be pushed to produce the work I know I am capable of generating. Although I felt English 102 was going to be a challenge, I felt I had a major advantage over the rest of the peers in our class. The advantage undoubtedly being that I had the same professor the foregoing semester. By choosing a professor whom I felt comfortable writing for, as well as an increased comfort level with your familiar teaching style and grading scheme, I felt I would have the easiest transition into your classroom. Instead of taking a different English 102 class with a new professor who would take half of the semester to learn my name, let alone my writing style, I was confident that you would be able to pick up on my weaknesses and help me exploit my strengths as a writer. For instance, last semester you helped me to spot my ongoing weaknesses in my writing style such excessive run-on sentences, proper grammar and the use of appropriate punctuation where necessary. I knew these weaknesses were going to be a challenge in that I saw them as “carryover” problems from year to year in my schooling. You also have helped me to realize what strengths I possess and, in turn, carryover from year to year as well. For instance, the confidence in my ability to summarize and synthesize material from varied sources as well as my ability to write creatively have all given me the self-assurance I need to write with meaning and purpose.
This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. Overcoming the oppositions found in the class and my own
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
I wanted to thank Ms. Geary for reminding me how much writing can do for me. It helped me realize that writing isn’t so horrible but it is just hard work. My writing skills have improved due to this class and all Ms. Geary had taught me. She made class fun with her inflections and just the way she says everything, her personality definitely showed through. I looked forward to class but never the homework. Finally after reading over my final drafts of: My Past as a Writer, Problematic Essay and my Exploratory Research Paper I realize that I have dramatically improved my writing skills in every draft thanks to revisions and some positive criticism for Ms. Geary. I think I am now ready to take on the next step in the English world.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
It’s Ilse Kloosterman, and I’m so excited for you to be my English teacher and help me to challenge myself, grow in my writing and reading skills, and think a little deeper. English is a fairly tough for me, as I have awful grammar, and I have troubles with creative thinking. When writing without a specific topic, I find it challenging to come up with a true solid idea. Also, it’s extremely difficult when writing, to keep my writing brief and concise, or afterward trying to find ways to shorten it.
Relief, worry, and doubt are only three words that run through my head as I write this final exam for my English Composition class. As I entered the class I felt as though it was going to be an easy A for me, because I did so well on my COMPASS test I thought I would do well in this class. Then I quickly realized I am not as good at writing as I thought I was. This class is intended to turn a not so good writer into a decent writer and to enhance the skills of writing all together. As was determined by my instructor and peers I am one who needed plenty of guidance throughout this class. As I went through each writing project I seemed to have the same errors or mishaps in each project. Run-on sentences, quotes and paraphrases, and
Overall, I have learned so much in English 111 and I have really enjoyed being in your class. Everything I have learned will help stay with me in my continuing years of college. I hope I have proven to you that the things you taught actually did help, and I gained so much knowledge about myself as a writer and a communicator. Your lectures were very interesting and you made them pleasant to learn. Thank you for a great semester.
...larify the structure and destination in which I was headed. By revising my essays I was able to make the content and message seem more important and made the final drafts seem a slight degree better than the originals, but the finals were better nonetheless. The instructor did a very good job in guiding me and helping find my way into writing by focusing on some of the problems I was facing and clarified them so that I would better understand them. The instructor helped me expand on my grammatical by helping me discover what it was that I lacked while constructing basic sentence structure; the usage of commas and semi-colons, quotations, and how to sight titles of books and articles within an essay. This English 101 course I have attended has helped me develop better writing skills as well as helped me create more profound essays and a very satisfying research paper.
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for all the efforts that you have invested in helping me improve my writing throughout this course. The exertions which you devoted in me did not go in vain. Throughout this semester, I have become more insightful in regard to the process of writing as a whole. Who knew that writing can be challenging yet rewarding simultaneously? Through many challenges encountered in this class and many exercises comprised in this course, I was exposed to new writing process, audiences, and I became more inclined to taking risks in the art of writing. As the semester took form, I came to find myself careworn by certain elements of the writing process. Unlike many writers, beginning to write,
In my eleventh grade Reflective Essay, I utilized metaphor, simile, an idiom, juxtaposition, and appeals to pathos. Speaking of a scholar’s life involves of lots of descriptive details; thus, I applied a simile to compare my grades to a barrier. The effect that the simile had was to bring forth an image of some sort of wall and comparing that to my grades to show how they have not been so pleasing. In that same sentence, I appealed to pathos because I have an emotional response to my grades, and I truly comprehended that grades are just letters, they do not define my knowledge. Inasmuch as I incorporate my grades as a key priority and praise my AP U.S. History class, I employed the idiom on “cloud nine” to amplify my perspective and put forth
I am a 2016 graduate of Byron Nelson High School. Life here at Collin is a great experience. I am here because I play at a Baseball Academy in McKinney. I plan on majoring in Kinesiology and receiving my degree from either the University of Oklahoma or Texas Christian University, wherever my baseball career takes me.
“I met someone who can help you get an English 10 class.” Those were the words that echoed through my mind after the last day of enlistment. It was because of this person, whom my mother met, that I was able to enrol in this class. It was actually better than taking Fil 40, mainly because I have actually struggled with Tagalog in the past. What did change that language difficulty was the fact that I would have to write papers. The first week of class started well with a diagnostic essay which I was able write and get neutral feedback. But soon I realized that the diagnostic essay was nothing compared to what I had to go through in order to produce the best papers I could write for the class; this was because writing any academic paper is no joke to be taken lightly.
