Overall, I believe that English 101 greatly impacted my writing performance for the better. With the help of multiple in class assignments and different styles of papers, I was able to fully broaden my writing skills and understanding. When I look back on this courses learning outcomes and course keywords, I feel as if I achieved a great number of them through the many writing assignments given to me. With a semesters worth of new found knowledge I was also able to reflect and revise one of my previous papers written in this course. If it was not for English 101, I feel my writing skills would be greatly set back.
When I look back to the learning outcomes given to me in my other courses this semester, I feel as if I did not truly acquire as much as I did through English 101. A major learning outcome given to me which I feel I truly accomplished was being able to employ a variety of research methods for purposes of inquiry. One of my professors in class assignments was gathering information for our profile paper. This assignment allowed me to find multiple sources for my profile through a wide variety of research methods i.e. books, newspapers, and website articles. Previously, I was only using websites as sources for my paper, however, this assignment opened the door to a wide array of different research methods. I was also able to

accomplish a majority of the learning outcomes listed under the “Reflection and Revision” portion. Some of the learning outcomes achieved include, suggesting revisions to other writers, acting on peer feedback to revise my texts, and reflecting on my peer’s academic process. These learning outcomes were all able to be accomplished through multiple in class peer review. I was able to read over my peer’s academic work and provide them with my insight and feedback allowing us to both grow as writers. Just as I gave my peers feedback, I was also able to receive feedback which I used to improve my paper and my future writing tendencies. Lastly, I was able to see my peer’s process in their academic process and apply it to my own process. Some of these newly acquired processes include, creating a tentative outline of major points I want to touch on the paper and turning it into a rough draft. This process greatly improved not only the structure of my papers but the paper as a whole. Not only was I able to achieve a majority of the course’s learning outcomes but I was also able to broaden my understanding of the course’s keywords. Through multiple written assignments, I was able to not only be introduced to numerous keywords but also apply them in my writing. The first written assignment given to the class was a reflection on a local event. This assignment allowed me to further understand a majority of the course keywords and apply them to my writing. I was able to quickly identify the community in which I was going to be writing about and was able to determine the purpose of my paper which was reflecting on a local event. After completing this, I was able to identify the roles the community and I gave to this local event and reflect on it in the form of writing. Previous to this course I had very little understanding of genre and how it is used in writing. However, after completing the genre analysis written assignment, I was able to greatly understand this term and how it is applied in writing. In fact, after learning more about this keyword I now see how important it to every writer’s academic works. After further understanding the courses learning outcomes and course keywords, I was able to reflect and revise one of my previous written assignments for this class. The paper I chose to revise was my first paper of this course, reflection of a local event.
During my initial reflection of my work I realized how poorly I conveyed the main purpose of this paper which was to reflect on a local event. In my original paper I recognized that I did very little of the main goal of this assignment which was to reflect. This being said, I looked over the in class assignment of recording my observations and used it to better reflect on my event. Through focusing on my papers purpose and being able to identify its community and roles, I was able to better get my point across and reflect more on my local
event. Overall, English 101 gave me a better understanding into how to properly write a paper and greatly impacted my performance moving forward in the way I write. Throughout this course I was able to complete a majority of the learning targets given to me and better understand the course keywords. I am very grateful to have taken this class for it will impact the way I write for the rest of my life.
I have learned a lot so far in English 1101, about myself and about writing. I have discovered that it is sometimes difficult for me to find topics to write about, but once I get an idea it is very easy for me to start writing. English has always been one of the subjects that I tend to struggle with, but this class has helped me realize that I actually enjoy writing. I have never really been able to write a lot about topics of my choice in the past. I am more accustomed to writing papers related to one specific topic. This class gives you a prompt to write about, but you are generally able to expand on that and choose your own topic as long as it relates to the prompt.
Assignment 3A reflective letter allowed me to express how the process went when writing my research paper. Writing this letter also allowed me to know what could have been done differently when writing the research essay and future assignments. Another assignment that allowed me to reflect on my writing process over time was the Literary Narrative. For this assignment I created a poem about my reading and writing process from the age three years old until now. I enjoyed this assignment and was able to share my creative writing style while expressing how much I value reading and writing
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
Composition 1 taught me crucial writing skills and helped me grow as a writer. At the beginning of the semester, my papers utilized a considerable amount of passive voice, lacked transitional phrases, and the context was not always fully developed. But throughout the class, my writing became more clear, organized, and comprehensive. Passive voice allows the object of an action to be the subject of a sentence. In my first paper, the formal summary essay, I wrote, “The term describes situations, dating back to the 1980s, when excessive numbers of blacks were found to have been exposed to highly polluted areas.” The use of “were found” and “been exposed” distort the meaning of the sentence. Passive voice confuses the reader and makes comprehension
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Writing has never been a strength I have possessed. English 102 has been difficult and challenging for me because I have had to move past the high school level of a basic book report or a five paragraph paper that has narrowed my ideas of writing for many years. Putting on paper what my thoughts are in a way that is logical and accurate for what the assignment is asking has been hard for me this semester. My ideas are now more involved because I have learned through English 102 how to develop my writing skills in different formats, for example, in an annotated bibliography and a research paper. In COL 101 I have learned many new things about college. Since this is my first semester at college I did not really know where everything was. This class really helped me to learn new things about myself, including what resources are available to me, what my plan for the future is, and the many changes I have endured during this course.
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
This semester has been full of ups and downs in all aspects of school, but English has created a challenge and reward all its own. I found this class to be relatively laid back and smooth going especially compared to General Chemistry. My biggest accomplishment in English 110, in my opinion, was writing my Rhetorical Analysis. I was required to write many different papers in many different ways in high school, but I never had to judge another author on their effectiveness of writing. After I wrote my analysis, turned it in, and read it for myself I was fairly happy. I thought that I did very poorly on it, but I did fairly well for my first analysis. I took what I thought I was suppose write, put my own spin on it, and it worked.
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned many new things that have improved my abilities as a writer. I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing skills are shown within each essay.
Writing papers has been one of my biggest fears as a student. High school English class prepared me for the editing of my essays, for example, grammatical errors, spelling, font errors, and things that were under the category of fixing my paper. I realized that the writing process requires more than just editing, you have to understand that the paper is like a human body, it cannot function if every single part is not effective. I can certainly say that I have improved as a writer a great deal and this portfolio and the final revised drafts of my work certainly can argue for that. English 101 was certainly different from my other English classes; we actually focused on different parts of the writing process in each class instead of wasting our time discussing the same components of the process over and over again. As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I am aware that I have met very important requirements of writing that I feel were very valuable for me as a student and my writing has improved progressively.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
Personally, I believe that I have gained valuable knowledge in my English classes. Recently, I am about to end my third English course of college and it has been a good experience, those courses helped and influenced a lot in my writing. I believe I did more than just improve my writing skills. I received some rhetorical and genre knowledge, and learned about the writing process and how to appropriately enter a conversation without losing my own style of writing.
I feel as though this class has helped me become a more polished and professional writer. When I first entered English 110, I was extremely unsure and lacked confidence in my writing. I believe that this point can be partly attributed to the fact that I had always had my instructors holding my hand and helping me through the writing process in high school. My senior English teacher always reminded us that college would be much more challenging than her class was and then she would go on to tell us stories of professors who gave out zeros for tiny oversights within a paper. This combined with general apprehension about college life left me terrified. I had always been a strong writer in high school; I know how to form an argument and support
