Leadership can be defined as a relational and ethical process of people trying to make a positive change for the good of a group. Leadership is a critical part of education for students. A student needs to learn, what a leader is, how to spot a leader, how to be a leader, characteristics of leadership, what a good and bad leader look like, and how to follow a good leader when necessary. Being that this is the first lesson of this course, students will be introduced to emotionally intelligent leadership, and how to identify a leader. Within this 3 hour session, broken up into two class meetings, we will be focusing on emotionally intelligent leadership and consciousness of self. This week students will complete the Emotionally Intelligent Leadership snapshot in their workbooks, students will then break up into groups and discuss their outcome from the assessment. This gives student an opportunity to meet the other students and learn something about them. We will also learn the eight capacities of consciousness of self by identifying areas for personal growth. This will be taught using two different activities, 1) a SWOT analysis 2) students will learn strengths of famous …show more content…
Students will identity areas for personal growth and development after they hear a short description of each capacity. Groups will then present what they found to the class.

Before taking the StrengthsFinder® assessment I didn’t know what type of leader I was, but I felt I had leadership traits that I could not describe. After answering several questions from the Clifton StrengthsFinder® 2.0, I found out my top five strengths. These strengths consist of individualization, arranger, learner, input and responsibility. The purpose of this paper is to go over my top five strengths to talk about which four domains of leadership these strengths fall under, how class material is applied, and the actions to best utilize my strengths.
Leadership is a quality which cannot be acquired by any person from the other but it can be acquired by self-determination of a person. Leadership can best be called the personality of the very highest ability-whether in ruling, thinking, imagining, innovation, warring, or religious influencing. Leadership is practiced not so much in words a it is in attitude and in actions. Their actions leave a long lasting memory in the line of history and lead up to may events that occur today. To be a leader one will need many qualities. Leaders have a purpose and strategies to accomplish that purpose. They are driven and motivated. In the end they should be able to attain good results. These innate talents help to make up a leader that will succeed and be efficient in carrying out tasks. But, the purpose of this paper is determine what truly makes a leader successful. A successful leader should be considered more on their impact rather than their accomplishments of their organizations alone for they are not sufficient in determining the key to their success .
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. This theory shows that leaders are born as such, there is no likelihood of 'making' them later with personal development techniques.
On the other hand, a leader is a person who influences a group of people in order to achieve certain goal. According to Oliver, (2006), leader is an individual who has an ability to demonstrate a specific set of role of behaviours in order to influence the others behaviours and attitudes. There three factor or keys that necessary to obtain a goal, which are the person, people, and purpose. Figure 1 below shows the relationship between the three factors needed to achieve the goal.
When I think of effective leaders, I think of leaders with strategies, visions, or powerful ideas. However, this course has taught me different. Great leadership doesn’t necessarily come from what you do, but instead from how you do it. According to Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee 's (2013) book, Primal Leadership, this "how" of a great leader comes through the heart or emotions. If leaders fail at driving emotions in the right direction, nothing they do, even if they get everything else just right, will be as successful as it could or should be (p. 3). This goes against many of the preconceptions of good leadership. I have always been shown that "good" leaders keep their emotions at bay and lead through intellect devoid of emotion because emotions can distort reality. This book emphasizes on theories of becoming a leader, it is not a “how to” book by any means. Bennis states how leaders contribute to society and how crucial they are, along with the characteristics that come along with being a leader. He provides intriguing insight about leaders and emphasizes the integrity and authenticity that such people carry. In this reading, Bennis (the author) recognizes an immense amount of traits/characteristics a leader possesses which are: maturity, curiosity, trust, passion, guiding vision, candor, self knowledge, and daring. Bennis claims that people are not born with these traits, and that people gain these traits by pushing themselves to exceed others.
Leadership is the social influence to motivate and encourage others towards a positive change. A leader must have a clear goal in mind to create a set purpose and must be committed in order to accomplish the groups goal. The leaders must focus on five key components; inclusive, purpose, ethical, empowering and process. Relational leadership focuses on taking this approach of leadership as purposeful and helps build commitment to the group, and empower those involved. Those involved in the leadership process need know who they are as a person in order to help create a change in the group, they have to be knowledgeable, aware of not just themselves but others, and take proper action.
Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership, not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency. All in all, this book highlights strategies for us all to be better in our lives and our everyday interactions.
The subject of personal leadership is widely recognised nowadays as it is often believed that successful leaders not only have the ability to lead other, but also know well and able to control oneself. In order to understand more about myself as a leader, I registered for this course. Around two months of this course, I have gained considerable knowledge which will be clearly documented in this Reflective Learning Diary. In addition, a separate section will be dedicated to my reflections after completing some personality tests.

However, I believe that it is better said to be a way of influencing others actions. Leadership is usually connected to a great leader that affected his or her followers in a dynamic way. Throughout the semester for my leadership class, I have expanded the knowledge in numerous ways. I now have fully understanding of the purpose and process of leadership to a society. Being a leader one must maintain an image of being the role model. I believe that this is leader should be who is someone who has the ability to influence, encourage, listen, and nurture. They are able to inspire, stimulate, persuade, shape, and have an effect on others.
Through this venture we will analyze the past, present, and future of leadership development as well as how the view of what it takes to be a good leader has changed and is changing. What in one point in time was considered to be a crucial skill for leadership, is now seen obsolete and new skills and competences have taken place to define success now and in the future.
Successful leaders exhibit a series of qualities and characteristics, which drive their success. Whether these qualities are innate, natural, learned or trained is the premise of this work. There is overwhelming research that may be provided to support various schools of thought regarding leadership development. This work will discuss my personal perspective regarding leadership development, examine leadership theory and characteristics in order to evaluate the origin of strong leadership and reflect on the importance of leadership in higher education administration.
This paper describes about my leadership strengths and areas for growth/future study. It also included how these qualities are used in my daily work routine, self-assessment results and a brief explanation on Individual style in leadership.
At the beginning of this course, I felt both excited, yet apprehensive about what was to come. Various discussions, and presentations seemed to intimidate me. However, despite my hesitation I understood that this course would help develop me into an effective leader and that is exactly what happened. Not only have I improved my skills, I also learned about defining leadership, and understood the importance of contributing out and inside of the classroom A large strength of mine is self-assessment and as we learned the seven key leadership learning areas in class I constantly was aware of what I was a weakness or strength and what was improved during this course.
