At least 1/3 of all Americans have symptoms of Insomnia (1); and thus figures includes a great number of teenagers. According to the author of “Stop starting school days so Early” the cause of sleep deprivation in teens is starting school at 8 or earlier. Ann Horton the author states it is harder for teens to fall asleep before 11 due to puberty (4). Research from a class standpoint shows that isn’t necessarily true. The lack of sleep isn’t from puberty. Sleep cycles could be attributing to the sleep deprivation in American. Teens are beginning to prioritize activities, social media, and electronics over sleep. The point to be seen is starting school earlier won’t change how many hours teens choose to sleep.
Preventing sleep deprivation would possibly be a benefit to starting school days later. Sleep deprivation should be addressed more to the general youth. Sleep deprivation can become chronic and cause several horrible side effects; including heart attacks, cardiac arrest, stroke, obesity, and depression(1). Lack of sleep for a few days is also dangerous; it can increase a person’s risk of an automobile injury as your alertness becomes impaired (1). Many researchers agree that sleep deprivation can act like alcohol in your system making your neurological state impaired (1). If starting school later prevented sleep deprivation among teens then it would save many lives. Getting the proper amount of sleep of night; usually agreed to be 9 to 9 and half hours; can increase your learning abilities, reduce obesity, manage stress, and make better decisions such as avoiding drug substances(1). The cause of sleep deprivation isn’t from the early start time of school; the problem lies in electronics and teens organizing their lives. Instead of changing school times teens need to be taught when their phone, TV, and Computer should be shut off. Sleep deprivation and is extremely danger but sadly changing the school start time won’t prevent this; changing the start time will only cause more problems. If anything teens need to learn how to prioritize their life’s with the freedom they have received. Finally teens need to be informed about the dangers of sleep deprivation and that the text message conversation can wait until the morning.
Many people argue that starting schools later will let students get more sleep and align with the students sleep cycles. But they do not factor in that students will just stay up later at night because they know that they do not have to get up as early in the morning. This will just leave students with less sleep than before. Also students will be up later finishing homework and socializing on their phones with friends. In this article Amanda MacMillan says that "Middle and high school should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m., says the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)." MacMillan explains that the AASM recommends that teenagers should sleep 8 to 10 hours a night. But according to the CDC, "almost 70% of high-school students report sleeping 7 hours or less on a regular basis." MacMillan names a few of the serious consequences that can teens can have if they don't get the recommended amount of sleep like depressive symptoms, obesity, risk taking behaviors and athletic injuries. Growth and development is also greatly boosted during sleep in children and adolescents as more growth hormones peak production occurs while sleeping (NIH,2017). Adequate sleep makes the body get sufficient rest and readjust in readiness for the activities of the following day.

It’s seven thirty in the morning, the time that most American high schools begin class. Instead of being chipper and ready to learn, most teenagers, at this time of the morning, can barely remain awake. These puffy eyed pupils are by no means ready to learn. Sixty percent children under 18 reported being sleepy during the day, with another fifteen percent reporting that they had fallen asleep during the school day within the past year (National Sleep Foundation, Dozing). Though adolescents require a larger amount of sleep than younger children, they usually receive much less (Indiana University Center for Adolescent Studies). The amount of sleep a teenager receives affects him or her both physically and mentally. Sleep deprived teenagers are more likely to be irritable, be depressed, not perform up to their capabilities in school, and have a decreased ability to handle complex tasks (National Parent Information Network). Though teenage sleep deprivation is a big problem, some simple solutions such as rescheduling the school day to fit teenagers’ biological needs, setting consistent sleep schedules, and teaching children the importance of proper sleep habits can easily remedy this problem.

Sleeping is something that is an essential part of human nature and is a must in order for one to be a functional human being. Sleep is an idea that is accompanied by many wives’ tales, including the ideas that one needs seven to eight hours of sleep each night and alcohol helps one fall asleep and sleep more soundly. One myth about sleep is that during sleeping, one is in a state of nothingness. In truth, however, it has been discovered that during sleep the brain is active, variations in heartbeat and breathing occur, and the eyes and ears are active throughout the time of sleep. These activities during a person’s sleep are important because they help that person be more aware, awake, and alert during consciousness. If all of these important activities occur during sleep, why is it that people are so willing to short themselves of this vital activity? Although much about sleep still remains a mystery, research and experiments continue to show how important sleep is to each and every person. Throughout this paper, I will discuss sleep and the effects that it has on performance and health, especially in college students. A college student’s sleeping pattern is a reliable indicator to their level of performance in the classroom and other school-affiliated activities, as a lack of sleep leads to decreased performance. Sleep is directly related the level of performance and health in an individual; the more rested a person is, the better that person will perform and feel (Dryer, 2006).

It is proven that teenagers get the minimum hours of sleep than any other age group. Teenagers are seen getting about five hours or less of sleep each night. Dr. Judith Owens, who is the director of the Sleep Medicine Clinic at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., says "adolescents are programmed to fall asleep later,” (2013). She wants to change school start times to later because "we are asking [teens] to be awake and alert at the time in their 24-hour clock when their alertness level is at its very lowest,” (2013). She also says that most teens can’t usually fall asleep until 11 p.m. Sleep expert Amy Wolfson of College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., says that children should try to get eight and a half to nine and a half hours of sleep a night. Waking up at six a.m. leads to bad sleep patterns creating sleep deprivation.
Having eight or more hours of sleep can help with mood, memory, focus, and learning and also having mental and physical effects.Getting eight or more hours of sleep has mental and physical effects such as all of medical levels that keep people alive in this day and age such as testosterone.Teen are affected , too, by falling asleep in class or at a job. A person that gets 8 or more hours of sleep will have a better mood and be more aware throughout the day.
