How common is it that we want to write a productive essay, but simply cannot due certain writing challenges? Answers may vary, but if we are not completely familiar with the process of writing, then we will surely struggle. One of the most impactful writing challenges between people is writer’s block which refers to when a writer loses the ability to produce new material or faces a lack of creativity while writing. Another commonly made writing error is the failure to vividly convey the meaning behind a paper due to a lack of connection between the writer and the audience. Brainstorming is a process in which a writer notes possible ideas that can contribute to the writing process and hence, provides a wide series of ideas for the writer to discuss without having to deal with difficulties in searching of what to write next. Notably, brainstorming could also be done in several different ways, such as contributing diagrams of the main ideas and their subdivisions, a diagram of the main problems along their reason and solutions, or even an advantages and disadvantages chart. Moreover, the reason why brainstorming plays a huge role in preventing writer's block is the fact that it allows the writer to have what is similar to a cheat-sheet for ideas. Thus, it provides a variety of topics for a writer to use as soon as he runs out of …show more content…

Writing requires a delicate balance between pleasing an audience, yet finding and sticking true to personal perspectives. More often than not, people find themselves ignoring their own thoughts and desires and just following along with the crowd, not standing up and arguing for anything, leaving behind a wishy-washy essay because they are too scared to stray from the obligations to others before the obligation to themselves. Anne Lamott’s “The Crummy First Draft” and Koji Frahm’s “How To Write an A Paper” both evaluate and stress the importance to find your own voice in writing and to be more critical towards readers. The reader’s perspective needs to play a role in writing, but it should not overrule the writer themselves. Writing needs to
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Allen, Bunn, and Irvin are correct to say how no one is born naturally good writers. Now that we know this, we should find ways to help improve our writing skills, and
However, when it came time to write the essay, I was confronted with my old enemy, writing. Writing and I have a history, I have never enjoyed being in the presence of writing, due to its both mentally and physically taxing requirements. Despite our deeply rooted feud, there are times where I cannot simply dismiss writing, and generally with help such as guided activities, exemplars, and therapy; Writing and I can put aside our differences for a brief moment of time. One example of this is in my argument, In the beginning sentence I feel that I was able to reach what was expected of me by created a strong counter argument and quickly proving it wrong: “Some might argue that if an individual has grown fond of an illusion, then why wake them from that joy? Now, that is a fair point, but as we see in the book, if they wake up, they realize how unhappy they truly are.” As I face more and more of these assignments where I am forced to implement writing, I grow more accustomed to the process. Writing might not be my ideal major, but I understand its importance. While I dread typing a 5 page essays, I know they are coming. Better I struggle know and learn than struggle later and

Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
Writers from professional to elementary students suffer from writers block. Writers block is when you cannot think of anything to write. Writers block is usually caused by stress. The brain then has a reaction which disables its ability to put what it is thinking on to paper. As Patricia Huston describes it, “The right, or creative, side of the brain, seeks to create (in this case, write). This induces the left, or analytic, side of the brain to anticipate all the problems that this action could entail, causing it to go into "overdrive" and inhibit the ability to write.” (Paticia Huston)One knows if they have writers block if they are staring at a computer screen or piece of paper for a long period of time. You also know you have it if the writer just feels unwilling to write or is simply just disinterested in the topic. Avoiding writers block is almost impossible since almost everybody experiences it, but there are still many ways to help prevent or cure it.
The concept of brainstorming is one of the newest problem solving methods, and was first mentioned by Alex F. Osborn in 1953. Today, brainstorming is commonly used for advertising, the development of new products, process management, and business planning. It is an important tool that you will need to master if you want to be good at solving problems.
Also, I had no problems with essays during my grade school years. I did not need much time to create an essay, or a journal, or something else for my writing class. The older I become, the more difficult it gets for me to write. Perhaps, I have more problems, needs, or other various things in my life that keep me from being able to focus on writing. Therefore, when I read “The Watcher at the Gates” by Gail Godwin, I saw myself there. In this essay, Godwin illustrates examples of many things that may be obstacles to some people to start writing. Also, she suggests several ways that may help people to overcome such a problem. Although I have different kind of excuses to not start writing, they all have the same meaning, purpose, and consequences as in Godwin’s essay: take me away from writing. There are some of my favorite excuses such as having no ideas to write about, other important things to do, and enough time before the deadline, that give me no good chance to begin writing. Still, I know that I must turn in my assignments on time, and this helps me to put aside these excuses.
My first writing weakness was deciding what to write about. I had to read the essay topic over and over again to understand what it was asking for. I would worry that I wouldn’t understand the topic correctly. While writing the essay I was scared to get out of topic and write about something else I wasn’t supposed to write about. Another thing that would happen to me was that suddenly my mind would go blank and wouldn’t be able to think about what else I could write about. The essay I liked writing the most this semester was the second essay. I enjoyed making my own planet and how my alien had a quest with all the commercials I saw on the TV. The hardest essay I wrote this semester was the fourth and last essay. I got confused when I was writing the body paragraphs. This writing weakness impacted my life by showing me that I have trouble thinking about how I could write my essays. I think I should start reading books and maybe I could get a few ideas out of those books.
The brainstorming techniques that work best for me are free writing and questioning. The free writing technique gives me the opportunity to write as freely as I desire. When free writing I am free from being critical of my work, and I am free from the worry of proper grammar and spelling. The free writing technique also helps me with writers block, allowing my creative juices to flow. The questioning technique is probally my favorite, I truly enjoy writing, and progressing at it. The who, what, when, why, where, and why questions, allow me to increase the detail, and information in my writing. You must pay attention to detail, and facts during this stage, at least it works best for me. What are some ways that the questioning technique help
Some of the complications I face with writing is not using enough body paragraphs, forgetting a thesis statement, lack of word choice, punctuation errors, etc. I am unaware at times of my mistakes, but I always try to correct them. Although adequate writing skills are indispensable for life, leisure, and employment, quite a few students do not learn how to write effectively. Since writing is an exercise in thinking, it is important to balance the process of writing with the mechanics of writing. The areas of the brain involved in the writing task are varied yet interrelated; therefore, a student’s individual needs will determine the method of instruction they receive. Many students who have low expectations for their own academic success will not make even minimal efforts to complete a...
It’s easy to think that being a good writer is just natural. What some people do not know is that in fact there are a few things called, “habits of mind”, that are necessary in being a successful writer. There is a total of eight habits of mind that will be discussed in this paper. Each habit of mind has its own individual way of making one a successful writer. The eight habits of mind include: curiosity, openness, engagement, creativity, persistence, responsibility, flexibility and metacognition.
Creative thinking has been around for quite a long time. Today it has become one of the most popular topics of discussion. Many times it is praised and encouraged, and it is rarely discouraged. People often ignore the fact that creative thinking can also have a negative impact. This paper will first discuss what two theories the creative process consists of.
The ability to write well is not a naturally acquired skill; it is usually learned or culturally transmitted as a set of practices in formal instructional settings or other environments. Writing skills must be practiced and learned through experience. Writing also involves composing, which implies the ability either to tell or retell pieces of information in the form of narratives or description, or to transform information into new texts, as in expository or argumentative writing. Perhaps it is best viewed as a continuum of activities that range from the more mechanical or formal aspects of “writing down” on the one end, to the more complex act of composing on the other end (Omaggio Hadley, 1993). It is undoubtedly the act of
