What Keeps Me From Writing When I was a child I liked to write letters to my friends. I had a lot of pen-pals. Also, I had no problems with essays during my grade school years. I did not need much time to create an essay, or a journal, or something else for my writing class. The older I become, the more difficult it gets for me to write. Perhaps, I have more problems, needs, or other various things in my life that keep me from being able to focus on writing. Therefore, when I read “The Watcher at the Gates” by Gail Godwin, I saw myself there. In this essay, Godwin illustrates examples of many things that may be obstacles to some people to start writing. Also, she suggests several ways that may help people to overcome such a problem. Although I have different kind of excuses to not start writing, they all have the same meaning, purpose, and consequences as in Godwin’s essay: take me away from writing. There are some of my favorite excuses such as having no ideas to write about, other important things to do, and enough time before the deadline, that give me no good chance to begin writing. Still, I know that I must turn in my assignments on time, and this helps me to put aside these excuses. The first reason why I don’t sit down and write is that I don’t know what to write about. Thinking about a topic to write about is not always easy, and sometimes the process of writing can end up being difficult. Jennifer Jacobson discusses strategies to overcome the struggles that young writers can encounter while writing. I was interested in her book No More “I’m Done!” Fostering Independent Writers in the Primary Grades because I feel like as a future teacher this could be a frequent problem among students. From reading this book, I hoped that I would learn useful strategies that I could use to help students overcome their problems with writing. Ophelia’s relationships and life are all controlled by the people that are supposed to love her. Shakespeare puts focus on the character of Ophelia to show how her family and lover in the play control all aspects of her life; he uses this to suggest that love cannot flourish in a controlling relationship and that oppression will lead to self-awareness and potentially rebellion.
Poor Ophelia, she lost her lover, her father, her mind, and, posthumously, her brother. Ophelia is the only truly innocent victim in Hamlet. This essay will examine Ophelia's downward spiral from a chaste maiden to nervous wreck.
While Hamlet’s achelis was his inability to adapt to the new realities he had come back too, Ophelia’s weakness was adapting to the will of everyone around her. This consequently lead her to lose herself in the end. The clear pattern of her willingness to please those around her at the cost of her own peace of mind is obvious from the beginning of the book as we are introduced to her.Her scene with Laertes sets the pace of her relationships as he attempts to dispense some advice in the form of a long winded cautionary tale against love and consequent betrayal. Unlike a hurricane that is form in the ocean a tornado is form on flat land. When cold and warm airs from different direction collide with each other they form a huge thunderstorm called a super cell. When air from two different altitudes begin to go at two different speeds they begin to form a funnel in between called a wind shear. (eo.ucar) When a part of the wind shear gets caught in the super cell upper draft, the speed of the upper draft will make the column go much faster curating a funnel cloud. (eo.ucar) When the funnel cloud is visible rain or hail from the storm will push down on the tail of the funnel cloud until it touches down on land making it a tornado.
When trying to think of a positive writing experience I have had in my lifetime, particularly as a small child, I could not think of any. So I began to ask myself why is it that I do not like writing, what happened in my life for me to have such animosity towards the act. I was finally able to think of an event and realized that it had all begun in the 3rd grade. One day, as a punishment for talking during class, I was kept inside during recess and was forced to write Wise Old Owls until my hands began to cramp. For 45 minutes, I was only allowed to write the same old phrase over and over again; “The wise old owl sat on an oak, the more he heard, the less he spoke, the less he spoke the more he heard, why can’t I be like that wise old bird”. To this day I can still remember that little rhyme and to this day I can remember that same feeling I felt as a elementary school student. From that point on I have always had an aversion for writing, it always seemed like a punishment. I still do not understand how people can journal. I don’t see how someone can sit down and write an entry or a novel just for the hell of it. "People are created and turned into who they are through their life experiences. Even if we do not realize it, the people who surround us influence our each and every move. In many cases, the positive influences that enter our lives change us for the better and we become kind, confident, strong-minded people. In the case of Ophelia in Hamlet, however, only madness and sorrow come from her experiences. Ophelia’s madness originates from a broken mind and a broken heart, both caused by her combative love for Hamlet, fraternal love for Laertes, and obedience towards Polonius. Throughout the play, one can see how Ophelia slowly breaks from her experiences with the closest people in her life.
My biggest problem wasn’t that I didn’t know what to write about, I just couldn’t put my thoughts into words, I couldn’t find a good place to start. So, I would close my eyes and imagine something fishing related to take me away from the computer screen for a moment to find myself and put my thoughts into words. No sooner would I do this would the ideas start flowing from my mind into my fingers which put them on the screen just as I am doing now. After writing a paper I would imagine myself catching a fish, getting my trophy, or getting a good grade.
Choosing a topic or finding the inspiration for material is the first step for writing an essay, book, article, blog, or any other form of written matter, and this step can often be the most difficult. Where do these ideas come from? Do they appear from thin air or does a higher power intervene, bestowing these lightning strikes of inspiration only on those deemed worthy? Does the writer do something to help themselves find inspiration and these beginnings? Michael Smith writes, “Beginnings don’t just occur. Beginnings have to be coaxed. They have to be lured and tricked and seduced. Or they have to be wrestled into submission, bludgeoned until they beg for mercy. They get dropped in the gutter, kicked to the curb, thrown out with the bathwater. And they get rescued, revisited, revised and revivified” (66). The process of writing can be almost painful for many individuals. Amongst college students, lack of inspiration and the struggle to find something meaningful to write about is often cited as a source of writing related stress. By examining where professional writers, both fiction and nonfiction, derived their inspiration, it is clear that most often inspiration is found in personal experiences, and may hold a key in helping college students find inspiration for their own works.
Composing has always been one of my weakest strengths, because I find it to be a challenging process to put my thoughts into writing. I struggle with expressing my ideas in a way that make it difficult for others to understand the big picture inside my head. During my writing process, I usually find myself spending a couple of hours on a paragraph, just to have it be erase and rephrased in a different way, repeatedly. This is all because I feel like it doesn’t make sense and people wouldn’t be able to understand the concept of my writing. Despite struggling to put my thoughts into writing, this is a skill that I am determine to improve and to become a better writer over time.
