“Methods of education: rote learning and conversational teaching”
There are two different ways of learning presented in this essay. These methods are rote learning and conversational teaching. Both of them have the purpose to help the Christian communities at churches to increase the knowledge that the congregation has about their beliefs and traditions. Equally, they can be useful for the people in charge of a group at church, from pastors to ministries’ leaders. First, there is “rote learning” which was proposed by Joel A. Smelley Jr., he defines it through the concept of Tokuma-Espinosa as “a learning technique that emphasizes memorization rather than understanding of a subject” (Smelley Jr. 310) that means that this method is just about learning as much information as you can and retaining it on your head without using the knowledge to apply it to life. It is a mechanical way of learning. Second, we have the “conversational teaching” that was proposed by Beverly C. Johnson-Miller. Here, the use of daily conversation and interaction with others is fundamental since it is supposed to be the only way to share with others and have a transformation. Whereas a dynamic tradition is capable of adapting and amending in order to meet the needs of society. In an age when culture continues to lower standards of intellect, Marva Dawn makes compelling observations and suggestions for the Church to rethink its’ strategy on impacting society. How do we evangelize without weakening the message of what we are communicating? The majority of her text focuses on the worship environment generally, but later she focuses on music, preaching, and liturgy specifically. According to Dawn, a gathering of believers should emphasize God as the subject and object of worship, challenge each individual to grow in godly character, and accentuate the community of believers (not only in the room, but throughout history as well). Through this grid, she encourages leaders and participants to evaluate each worship element. If these primary goals are accomplished, then worship will not be empty and simpleminded. Instead the worship atmosphere would be held to a higher standard and, she believes, both pleasing to God and attractive to those who do not know God.

My preferred learning style is the “How”. In order for me to learn or memorize new skills, concepts, or techniques, I have to do them myself. By putting the things that I’m learning to work, I can discover how difficult a skill may be. I will be able to point out and pay attention to possible mistakes or errors that I’m likely to make when I have to use that skill in the real world. Knowing our weaknesses is a crucial part in the learning process. One of my weaknesses is that I don’t have the greatest memory; my preferred learning style has been a huge help in this regard. By doing, I’m less likely to forget what I have learned and even if I do forget, I will not forget as much information as when I learn using other methods. One other important benefit I get from trying things out is the fact that this method gives me the answers to the tens of questions that I may have when learning something. Love Yourself as Hearers. Above all, the preachers should consider first the audience or “hearers” when preparing a sermon.
