7.2 Vocal The vocal aspect examines how you use your voice to communicate orally. You need to be able to project your voice to be heard and understood by all in the audience. You would also have to make use of the appropriate pitch, pauses, vocal variety and correct pronunciation to hold their attention. 1. Volume Volume refers to the loudness or softness of a speaker’s voice. It is important to check with the audience if you can be heard before the presentation. In addition, you can use volume strategically to emphasize the most important points in your speech. 2. Rate Rate is the speed at which a person speaks. It is important to vary the rate to maintain the interest of the audience. A comfortable listening rate for the average person is about 125 words per minute. Since rate is an important tool in enhancing the meanings in your speech, you must modulate the rate to correspond to your topic and your points. You can show enthusiasm, urgency or humour by using a rapid and lively rate; respect and seriousness using a slower rate. The audience will not be able to follow your train of thought and lose focus if you speak too fast. Conversely, they will become annoyed constantly waiting for the next word if you speak too slowly. …show more content…
Pitch The effective use of pitch is one of the keys to an interesting delivery that will hold your audience’s attention. Pitch refers to the highness or lowness of a speaker’s voice. Some speakers have deep voices while others have high voices. You need to use your normal speaking pitch – the pitch you are most comfortable when you are speaking. Just as you can use volume strategically, you can also modulate your pitch to make your delivery more enthusiastic, interesting and
Being true to yourself during a speech is something the audience will take notice of. When a person speak genuinely, their speech is more conversational and the audience is more engaged. This notion can be witnessed throughout the
While analyzing the speech, I notice how he isn’t shaky from nervousness or his voice’s pitch getting higher which makes him confident, is already prepared of what he wants to talk about, and therefore does not cause any distractions towards the audience. His voice tone is at his natural state as I assume as it calm, not quick to rush words out, and engages the audience by not bringing
In the first place, from our complex personalities, why focus on voice? According to Barbara McAfee, the voice is: “the way you sound when you speak or sing, an
The last, but probably one of the most important things we have to do when we sing, is to listen to each other and to sing with the mood of the music. If it is a soft song we are singing, then we can’t sing loudly in the piece, and if it is a song requiring a lot of energy, we have to be enthusiastic.
The ability to use your voice in such a way that it can challenge views, inform about social and cultural perspectives, persuade your audience to adopt your beliefs, to evoke your own emotions upon others and to promote certain agendas is what can only be described as a distinctive voice. The way you present your voice, whether it be calm and emotional or strong and outspoken, are examples of ways that you can manipulate language to add more impact to aid your purpose.
The spring choir concert that I went to was like the percussion concert just with singing. I enjoyed listening to the singers as they sung the different melodies. As I was sitting there listening to the different singers sing I could not help but to think about how strong there voices are and how strong they must be to get over the big space of the performance center. Voice is just lost in such a big space like the one in the Price performance center, they have to work on their voices and make sure that they can sing loud, clear and strong to get it across to the audience. Also, while trying to do that they must make sure that the quality is not lost while trying to increase the loudness of their voice. I could also tell the different voices such as the tenors the sopranos and the altos. I could not help but to realize how these different voices interacted with each other and how without one set the sound would not be the same and would be lost. I don’t understand how some people can sing as high as they do, such as the alto section. They must have some hard exercising for their voice to get as high as it does and to sound just as good.
The type of voice in a narrative can have an important roll in shaping the style and feel of a text. Different types of voices help to create variety in the things readers are presented with, for example a first person voice is common because the reader is able to be presented to a person who knows all about the situation. A First person voice is also able to make the reader develop a bias to the characters thoughts and feelings, this can also be a reason to choose a particular type of voice.
The delivery of my speech portrays a sense of calmness and seriousness. I used this style of speaking to show the importance of my subject, lack of organ donors. Throughout the presentation I used note cards as a guide and frequently made eye contact with my audience. When giving facts that I felt were important I made sure to look at the camera to show there significance. I also added my input into some of the facts to try and convince my listeners to become organ donors
Narrative voice describes how the narrative is presented to the audience and how the reader conveys this. It shows the thoughts and feelings of the narrator and it is like the narrator is having a one on one conversation with the reader. Normally the narrator completely opens up to the reader and tells them everything that they are thinking, as if the reader is their closest friend. It shows the way in which the narrator sees the situation that they are dealing with and how they feel about it all. Although this is a good thing, it can sometimes lead to the narrator being biased and only telling the reader what they see going on.
The voice is our primary mean of communication and expression. We rarely last more than a few minutes without its use whether it is talking to someone else or humming quietly to ourselves. We can use the voice artistically in many ways. For example, singing carries the rhythm and melody of speech. It creates patterns of pitch, loudness, and duration that tie together syllables, phrases and sentences. We use the voice for survival, emotion, expression, and to reflect our personality. The loss of the voice is a severe curtailment to many professions. It is affected by general body condition which is why we need to consider the location of the larynx and how that organ produces voice. Surprisingly, this complex biological design is mechanical in function. It is mechanical to the point that when it has been excised from a cadaver and mounted on a laboratory bench, the larynx produces sounds resembling normal phonation. (Titze, Principles)
I have also learned about different types of audiences and speeches including persuasive, informative, entertaining and delivering special occasion speeches. It came to my attention that whenever I was making these presentations or speeches, I needed to do so with confidence, consistence and practice before the actual presentation and completely eliminate the element of panic. It was also clear that capturing the attention of the audience and engaging them in the whole process, it was necessary to have a very strong introduction and also try and use visuals to deliver the message. It was therefore vital to respect each person’s diversity and cultural values (Lucas, 2011).

In public speaking I learned many types of concepts, theories and terms of communication. In concepts of publicly speaking there’s, relaxation, practice, credibility, attention getters, attire, organization, volume, emotion, audience relation, and movement. The way we communicate can be very important in representing ourselves in our community. In the beginning, of the semester, we watched a movie regarding a royal member whom was looked down upon because of his verbal pauses. However, throughout the movie he learns to work with his speaking style. He may have not completely eliminated the flaw but, he did learn how to overcome and adjust with it is style of public speaking. Public speaking is very power it as the authority to make an audience shock, upset, surprised, disbelief, and even to become inspired. By using structure in a speech and applying ethos, pathos, and logos can create a deeper connection to the audience. Therefore, the most impactful part of a speech is its introduction. Such that if the speaker implies a power attention getter they are able to deliver their message successfully. In my class presentation, the times I won speaker of the day I noticed that within my speech the only reason why I was selected was because I provided a strong attention getter and because my voice was very loud and it had minimal of verbal pauses. I have learned that any speech can be delivered successfully when the elements of structure and practiced are present. For most of my presentation to prepare I would practice my speech by recording myself with a tape recorder and then replying. This allowed
