7.2 Vocal The vocal aspect examines how you use your voice to communicate orally. You need to be able to project your voice to be heard and understood by all in the audience. You would also have to make use of the appropriate pitch, pauses, vocal variety and correct pronunciation to hold their attention. 1. Volume Volume refers to the loudness or softness of a speaker’s voice. It is important to check with the audience if you can be heard before the presentation. In addition, you can use volume strategically to emphasize the most important points in your speech. 2. Rate Rate is the speed at which a person speaks. It is important to vary the rate to maintain the interest of the audience. A comfortable listening rate for the average person is about 125 words per minute. Since rate is an important tool in enhancing the meanings in your speech, you must modulate the rate to correspond to your topic and your points. You can show enthusiasm, urgency or humour by using a rapid and lively rate; respect and seriousness using a slower rate. The audience will not be able to follow your train of thought and lose focus if you speak too fast.
