What do you think about when you think of singing? Do you think about the latest rock or pop craze? Or do you think about some opera singer on stage? For me, when I think about singing, I think about All City Choir.
All City Choir is a try-out choir made up of about 60 kids in grades four through eight who’ve come together to sing. We also have three awesome conductors Wendy Gee, Wendy Masciotra (or who we call Mrs. M), and Eva Bettger and we sing from September through April in our two seasons: Christmas Season and Spring Season.
In All City Choir, we also learn how to sing properly in many different ways. The first thing you learn is how to breath properly. We’re not allowed to breath like this (with your shoulders), but naturally like this (with your stomach). This is what my conductors call “tummy power”. One of the warm ups the choir conductors make us do are these huge sighs that start from the top of your voice and go down to the bottom of your voice to warm up our vocal chords and get us to breath properly.
Another technique we have to learn in choir practice is we learn now to pronounce vowels and consonants correctly. An example of that would be pronouncing out “D”s as light “T”s. We also have to keep our mouth round and you cannot smile while you’re singing or else it ruins the effect of the vowels. One thing we always always must do is to pronounce the consonants loudly. What our conductors always make us do to help us remember this is to say “We LoVe ouR CoNSoNaNTS!”.
The last, but probably one of the most important things we have to do when we sing, is to listen to each other and to sing with the mood of the music. If it is a soft song we are singing, then we can’t sing loudly in the piece, and if it is a song requiring a lot of energy, we have to be enthusiastic.
One piece we sang this year was called “Reflections of a Lad at Sea”. Our conductor for the last movement (Mrs. Gee) was always nagging us to add more energy into the song. The last movement was called “Ghost Ship” which was a story about a ghost ship a sailor had seen one night.
On March 13th the Rochester Oratorio Society and Houghton College Choir performed at the Hochstein Performance Hall in the city of Rochester. It was a predominately vocal concert with an accompanying pianist. The main performance of the evening was the Rochester Oratorio Society’s rendition of Johannes Brahms’ “Ein deutsches Requiem,” in which vocal soloists Elena O’Connor and Benjamin Bloomfield took the front stage, and Linda Boianova joined Kevin Nitsch as a second pair of hands behind the piano.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is one the world’s well-known choir since its one of the prominent and oldest. The choir started out as an insignificant group, but rapidly began to be more popular as the years progressed. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is a chorus of 360 men and women in total. They have entertained millions of spectators by performing in places such as at the “World’s Fairs and expositions at inaugurations of U.S. presidents, in acclaimed concert halls from Australia and Europe to Asia and the Middle East” (Mormon). “In 1929, the Choir began broadcasting Music & The Spoken Word on radio” (Mormon). Now they have various radio and television stations. The Mormon Tabernacle has been broadcasted live all over television and several social media sites. They are also known as “America’s Choir” because people all over the world enjoy their harmonious music. Each member has a distinctive voice and their belief in god, makes this effort to influence others through music. The choir is “an ambassador for ‘The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” their music surpasses the traditional restrictions, which led to numerous people bonding universally through music. The Choir performs at least two sessions per year, and they also have a demanding calendar which they must follow. The Choir grew successful by the aptitude, commitment and dreams of its leaders. Every single person in the choir and others outside the Choir helped the Choir be cultivated and helped them develop into the enormous Choir that they are today. On November 16th, 2013, I attended a concert choir, fall choral concert. This event took place on the Wheaton College Campus, in the Edman Chapel at 7:30 pm. The chapel was well-lit, with long pews for the audience to be seated. The concert began with the audience looking up into a balcony, where the ensemble stood in neat rows. They watched the conductor, who stood on a stage in front of the audience, waiting for their cue.
The second piece, Paratum Cor Meum, was a much shorter piece with very few lyrics. It was interesting to hear a piece by Haydn, since we had discussed this composer in class. I was impressed by the choir members’ ability to remember words in another language, and I enjoyed the sounds of the piano accompaniment.

A gap year is a break the can last anywhere between two months or two years and is taken between high school or in college(American Gap Association). A gap year right after high school may not sound like a good idea at first, but many people are thinking differently lately. Gap years are not as common in American as they are across seas. Taking a gap year before college could help you find out what you want to do. If you do plan on taking a gap year right after high school you can still apply for college during your senior, like normally. All you do is when you get your acceptance letter back you can defer your admission for a year. Gap years are beneficial if you spend them volunteering, working, or just taking a break.

You’re coming back from a well needed break from school and you feel invigorated and ready to start. The first few weeks are the hardest to adjust to because your brain hasn’t been used throughout the break. The dilemma with breaks, such as summer break, is that one loses valuable information from past academic courses that are essential to ones progress towards higher education. Imagine a whole year without learning and then coming back to intense rigorous classes at a University. Seniors at high schools over the nation have the opportunity of taking a year off before committing to a college. This is known as a Gap Year; instead of directly enrolling into a University many students feel the need to take a break before starting their education towards their future career. Yes, a Gap Year does sound pleasing and beneficial, but in the long run it can be damaging towards ones future. Students should be aware of the ramification a Gap Year brings, such as, the possibility for enrolling in a graduate school is lower, academic growth is reduced, and social obstacles become present.
The answer is no; many gap year programs offer a college credit. The take-a-break-first concept got a “high-profile boost when Princeton University began its own "bridge year" program last fall. Twenty Princeton freshmen spent nine months this past year not in class but instead working in one of several overseas service programs” (Grose). So even colleges are on board for this gap year program. However some people think that trying to go back to college after a break will be difficult, but they did it in high school after fall or summer break. Parents also have the concern that you will finish college much later than your peers. The average time to receive a degree is about six years, so even with taking a gap year, the students will still be around the same age as their peers. Pros of the restorative justice system are that it brings parties together in crime. Instead of a short term goal, the restorative justice system takes a long-term approach to reducing crime and violence using different kinds of methods. In restorative justice programs, offenders work with others affected by their criminal actions. Restorative justice promotes instilling positive behaviors in young criminals and teaching long-lasting changes in behavior to prevent future crimes. There also could be negative consequences from the restorative justice system. For restorative justice to work, criminals and their victims must communicate about the crime and its consequences. Since violent crimes often leave victims feeling helpless and vulnerable, encouraging communication can result in increased anxiety and fear. Additionally, communication might breach confidentiality for victims of violent crimes, such as rape and assault, because they must discuss the outcome of the crime and how it has impacted
