Let’s begin with two of the most changeable areas that every politician wants to reform for the better or so they believe. Paulo Freire stated “If knowledge is power then education is political” (Good Reads n.d., online). In fact, they have been at the top of the government agenda since the beginning of the summer (Cambridge Assessment 2013, online). The reforms will depend on several factors, which “in theory” need to be considered before implementing any changes, such as culture, economics, politics and diversity. These areas are education and curriculum.
Dewey once said:” Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself “(Scholastic n.d., online). The sentiment expressed in this quotation, embodies my own view and believes. Education is the process by which human beings acquire the values, knowledge, experience and ways of behaving, allowing them to function in life. It starts the day you are born, until the last day of your life. It even begins before birth, in the mother’s womb. The baby receives stimuli from the mother, the father and the environment. Education happens throughout our lives and it happens formally (School, College, University, etc.) as well as informally (Developed in the community, the church and other institutions of society).
On the other hand, Curriculum refers to the set of objectives, content, methodological approaches and assessment techniques that guide teaching and learning processes. In order to successfully develop it, not only the government but also schools, teachers, students, employers and parents must be involved in it (Education 2013, online).

Today education has an endless amount of definitions which are correct in certain aspects of society, but most leave out the one part of education that is truly vital. That is the concept of real life experiences. The debate on what it means to be educated has been going on for centuries, yet the answer isn’t esoteric at all! Since the release of the report by Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) in December of 2010 many in the government and community are searching for ways to reform the American education system to give American students the greatest opportunity to succeed. According to the report, American students are not testing as high as other nations in the world (Duncan, 2010). There are many contributing elements that have brought America to her knees in the education system, however, the obsession with standardized testing is found to be one of the most influential downfalls.

A curriculum is a compilation of study materials that are used at all grade levels, classroom and homework assignments and a set of teacher guides. It could also include a list of prescribed methodology and guidelines of teaching and some material for the parents etc. It is generally determined by an external governing body. While in school, one can obtain a great personality, by having the need for friendship with people who have a common interest. Thus, a personality is formed and impacted by relationships and events that occur during school. Being taught information for so long, people tend to become more enlightened to multiple subjects. Then knowing multiple subjects, such as but not limited to geography, sociology, psychology, engineering, accounting, and philosophy. Education provides all of this. they would have to be relentless to reach the level of a doctorate, which essentially means a specialist in a specific field. What is curriculum? The term curriculum if often misunderstood for “the curriculum”. A formal document stipulating what learning outcomes students ought to achieve. In hindsight, the term curriculum is considerably broad and complex. Blaise and Nuttall (2011) highlight five key concepts in relation to curriculum theory and practise. Firstly, the intended curriculum, what teachers want students to experience (Blaise and Nuttall, 2011, P. 82). The enacted curriculum, what the educators teach. The hidden curriculum, what students learn without teachers realising. The null curriculum, what teachers do not want students to learn (Blaise and Nuttall, 2011, P. 82). Lastly, the lived curriculum, which is what the students actually experience. These five concepts sum up the term curriculum as more than just a document or what ought to be taught. Essentially curriculum is the experience.
Designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments are steps teachers use to help them make sense of the concepts they teach and helps drive instruction. These steps can take on many different forms and drive a classroom in a plethora of ways. These steps, when developed properly, can help a teacher utilize each moment in the classroom and help students gain more insight to the standards they need to become proficient.
