What is curriculum? There are various definitions of curriculum. First, Ornstein and Hunkins (2013) defined curriculum as “a plan for achieving goals,” followed by a definition that incorporates dealing with the learner’s experiences. A less popular definition asserts that curriculum is a system for dealing with people (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2013). Curriculum can also be defined by the state standards and elements that student are required to learn in order to show mastery of concepts for that given subject. I define my personal philosophy as pragmatic. This is supported by the fact that my teaching style focuses on utilizing critical thinking skills and exploration. I currently teach in secondary education. The students in my U.S. History Advance Placement course are constantly engaged in performance task that require exploration into who, what, when, where, how, and why. Advance Placement curriculum focuses on engaging discussions, advancing and unraveling problems, challenging analytical reasoning skills, fostering new educational skill sets, and learning to write on a university level. A growing number of States recognize that Advance Placement is a successful, growing curriculum program which improves the educational system and offers gifted and talented students the accelerated rigor they greatly need to challenge them intellectually. If a classroom and the curriculum can offer and aid diverse styles of learning, it is likely that more students will learn more successfully and proficiently (Campbell & Campbell, 1999). Students need to be exposed to challenging curriculum that provides connections with advanced content and concepts, as well as to increase their awareness of and reflection upon their own thinking (Van Tassel-Baska & Little, 2011). Connected to this theme is the development of a shared, lived experience, where students and teacher are involved in an ongoing negotiation of curriculum. In the first 13 chapters, Paley’s central focus is to develop a learning community within the safety of the classroom. In the second half of her book, Paley illustrates how the combination of these two themes in turn offers an opportunity for what we call an opening up of the definition of curriculum. This review is an analysis of these three themes within the organizational framework of Paley’s book. The theme of children and teachers as co-creators of curriculum is established in the first chapter when Paley says, “Each year I wait to be reawakened by a Reeny … something to ponder deeply and expand upon extravagantly” (p.10). Reeny responds to this call by asserting herself early on as a curriculum leader in Paley’s classroom. Because children themselves are curriculum makers and leaders, curriculum cannot be imposed upon the learner. Ultimately, this opening up of the discussion of what curriculum means is established by Reeny in the last lines of the book when she announces: “But I’m thinking, why don’t you stay and we’ll talk about it. Don’t fly away. See we can keep talking about it, okay?” (p. 99). It is in Reeny’s utterance that we understand—the curriculum conversation must necessarily begin with students’

American History X is an American film released in 1998, directed by Tony Kaye (his first feature film) starring Edward Norton and Edward Furlong in the leading roles. The film tells the story of the two Vinyard brothers, Derek and Danny and their family living in Venice Beach, California. Derek is a member of a neo-Nazi group and is very involved in the defense of the white race he calls '' higher '' while Danny, younger, admires his brother and just wants to behave like him. Sentenced to three years in prison for the murder of two black criminals trying to steal his car, Derek leaves Danny alone with no marks and under the influence of the neo-Nazi group and its founder Cameron Alexander. Although intelligent but young, Danny seems lost and falls into racist ideas that the milieu he frequents keeps hammering him. It begins to affect his school work where, one day, he writes an essay praising Mein Kampf. Dr. Sweeney, the black Principal of the Venice Beach High School, is almost paternal to Danny and tries to help him despite his xenophobic and dangerous behavior. The film's title is actually the name Dr. Sweeney gives private lessons he decided to teach himself to the young Danny, his first duty being to write a new essay about his brother, which will serve as a guideline to the film. The Principal aims at preventing Danny from having the same fate as his brother and eventually ending up in jail, because he has hope in him and does not want to abandon him in this unhealthy environment, starting with Seth, the former obese friend of Derek, deeply racist and hateful toward African-Americans.
