In the crafts colloquium the class works on projects utilizing used and environmentally friendly materials. Last semester, the class worked on pumpkins for the elderly during Halloween, colored lanyards, friendship bracelets, origami and with partners, a do-it-yourself rug for the homeless and recycling bin backboards. Sadly, due to the smaller amount of colloquium sessions due to school functions(cubby walk, ACT), AP Exams, and Spring Break there were only three major projects I participated in. My group and I made pinwheels for the Freshman Orientation, St. Patrick Day charms, and briefly began I-Day accordian people. Unfortunately, due to I-day being cancelled the people accordions project was never finished however, the gesture of showing the diversity of the cultures and dances represented at NCP was a refreshing reminder of the school’s culture and how the crafts help in showcasing that. My favorite project had to be the pinwheels for the freshman because of who they were going towards and the the high …show more content…
Similarly, with the I-Day accordions although they were incomplete they impacted me personally by seeing the importance and the messages it sends to the school. I have never participated in an I-Day dance, but after brainstorming concepts and gathering materials to show support ,personally, I =became more conscious and aware how not only I-day represents Northside’s melting pot culture and inclusiveness, but despite not personally experiencing any dances I can still show my support for the dancers and clubs that work very hard to make sure it is possible for all the
For my Cultural Plunge, I participated with Project Excell (Extending College Education for Lifelong Learning). This is a group that meets on campus, in the union, every Saturday morning from 9:00-11:00 AM. Each participant has a developmental disability and they come from various places around Manhattan. Project Excell offers around 4 different classes for the participants to choose from, which range from dancing/theatre to the history of Nigeria. After completing a “session,” the participants go through a graduation ceremony and then begin a different type of class for the next few weeks. I joined this group as a student ambassador, who assists the classroom teachers while building relationships with and tending to the needs of the participants.
But that year was biology and we were able to do so many school in class projects like dissecting a squid and using its ink pouch to write my name, catching bugs then killing them and pinning them to egg cartons and working on classifications. For a bunch of 12 year olds all the learning we did was through actually doing the science or looking at real live/dead things. This I found to be the best way to learn. Actually working with the thing we were learning about did not only engage each student much more, but it made science fun and a class to look forward to each
Practicing three times a week for three hours was rough for the first few weeks, considering I was a beginner, but I didn't let that intimidate me, and so I continued. Making new friends, learning more about my Mexican culture, and boosting my confidence - all of these were areas that I had struggled with, but little by little, dance helped me accomplish such positive effects. With all the dedication I had since elementary school, I learned all the routines for our performance that would occur on December 12th.
To complete my senior project I needed to use the following materials: a photo album, which I bought, camera, film, information about each individual, and a lot of paper. In order for me to get the information I needed to do my project, I had to go to the office for some of it, the other I had a questionnaire I made up and sent that around to the members of the school, and last I needed to go around and ask them questions personally on my free time.
My capstone project pertains to how swing dance and jazz music impacted America and the affects it had on the line of segregation during the time of the Great Depression. For many years the time and era of swing and jazz always amused me. Though they were hard times and people basically had nothing to live for, the fact that music, swing and jazz in particular, brought them to life, was a beautiful concept.
During late April, St. Croix Educational Complex High School art students recently enjoyed the fruits of their creativity during a Virgin Islands Centennial themed art exchange excursion to St. John. Twelve National Art Honor Society and SCEC Art Club students traveled along with SCECHS Visual Arts educator, Danica David, and four parent chaperones. Before traveling, the group sold many Virgin Islands Cultural Contributors Calendars to raise monies for the trip. The Virgin Islands Cultural Contributors Calendar Project is a collaborative project devised during fall 2017 by Ms. David and fellow St. Croix Educational Complex Drama and Speech educator Sayeeda Carter. Ms. David’s students created artwork, while Ms. Carter’s students interviewed and wrote biographies about the selected participants. The calendar project is an interactive learning experience for SCECHS students and participants in the community who are actively contributing to Virgin Islands culture.
Fast forwarding to the summer of 2016, I took part in a two week dance program at New York University. At that point in my dance career, I had improved so much and dance had become my life.
My favorite aspect of this project was learning all of the different aspects of making the sand paintings. Especially, the ceremonial ones because they are the ones that need to be perfect in accordance with Navajo tradition and belief to work.
The first time this project was introduced to the class I immediately started forming ideas. I once dreamt of having my own business and at one point created a logo for my fake business. The excitement ran through my body with this project because it provided me a way to express myself. That same day my grandmother and I shopped at Michael’s crafting store my logo started to conceive. In the store the creative flow poured out in an overwhelming amount
Lord of the Flies Essay Imagine being trapped on an island with complete strangers forced to survive. Would everyone come together as a team to work towards a rescue? William Golding's classic novel “Lord of the Flies” tells the story of a group of young boys forced to survive on a remote island after a plane crash. The story follows the boys as they deal with their fear, obstacles on the island, and each other and ultimately try to be rescued. In “Lord of the Flies” the author conveys the theme that commitment to teamwork is a necessary component for a group's success through Ralph, The boys, and Jack.
The East Pennsboro elementary school raised money for a statue at a local park. The statue was a ring of children that were holding hands. There was one child missing; the link was broken. The statue was dedicated to East Pennsboro students that did not make it to their graduation. My sophomore year of high school inspired this piece of artwork.
I think the project that most impacted me as a learner was the memorial project. This projected made me grow as a learner because I had to work with someone that I had never worked with before. When we started just getting a topic that we both wanted to do was the first thing that made me realize that this project was going make me need to use and learn some new skills. My partner and I had some trouble with trying to come up with a design to show everything we wanted to show for our topic. We had to be patient with each other making sure the we both listing to each other and understanding what and why they wanted to do this. We also has some trouble with communication because we didn’t completely understand what the other wanted making ti hard to finalize our design. Another thing with communication was who was doing what my partner didn’t always know what to do so we would sometimes end up wasting time trying to find something for her to do that she wanted to do. Communicating was something that I really improved on for this project teaching me how to be more specific with what I say so that we don’t get confused later. Over all I think that this memorial project as the one that made me use more of the learner profile skills then any other and helped me improve one one as
Although she was older than most when she began practicing as an Irish dancer, she informed me on the cultural importance of the dance and how her confidence rose. While I did increase my overall knowledge of my friend, I also became more aware of myself and what make me, me. This project pushed myself to ask family members about our culture which resulted in me receiving answers that included multiple new aspects to my culture that I never truly recognized before. I began to recognize more of my family and I’s traditions and their long history. This project made my family and I bond grow stronger and increased my knowledge of our culture. Therefore, the 1st marking period project allowed myself to increase my knowledge about my own culture, beyond what I had known before, and truly learn a significant amount my friend and her Irish
Weaving is a common thread among cultures around the world. Weaving is a way of producing cloth or textile. Today we have machines that weave large-scale textiles at cheap prices. Production of cloth by hand is rarely engaged in today’s Westernized societies. Not many people are thinking about how the fibers are actually constructed to make their clothes. However, in other cultures across the world the tradition of weaving still exists. By comparing three cultures that continue weaving as a part of their tradition we can see similarities and the differences between them. The reasons that each culture still weaves vary, as do the methods and materials. The desired characteristics of the cloth also vary around the world as each culture values different aesthetics.
