The purpose of this paper is to write about management theories which are contingency, system, complexity and chaos theory and leadership theories and what they are be trait, attitudinal and situational. I also describe my leadership style which is democratic and what leadership and management theories go along with my style. I also talk about the kind of work environment that would work best for my leadership style and the three keys to be a successful leader.
There are four management theories' there is contingency theory, system theory, complexity theory and chaos theory. Contingency theory is when managers need to consider the whole problem and all the components before making a decision. System theory is a person trying to change

I think that when I get more experience and confidence I would move more to autocratic type of leader ship. Fischer said studies have suggested that leaders are not born but can develop key competencies through training education and professional development to be a good leader (Fischer,2016) this is somewhat true. I believe that there are some skills that people need to have to help them grown in to great leader while some skills can be learned. Right now, my democratic is really working. I have no problem delegating tasks to others as long as I know as they can perform it right. I don't think that a person should have to take on all the tasks because they will get burned out. I think that I am strong in trait theories that people can rely on me if they need true help and don't ask for help just because they don't want to do any work. I think that system theory's is half and half I do try and plan to think about all the options when I try and change things but sometimes things don't work out and I did not plan for. For example, I am bad at chaos theory. I like when things go to plan and try and plan far out in advance with many different options but when things don't go as planned I get frustrated. Three keys behaviors that a leader must have to be a successful leader would be would be social awareness, relationship management and self-awareness (Fisher,2006). Managers need to be able to work with others and can have empathy when others are struggle and be able to help them out. Being social aware of situations and being there to motivate people when they are down. Employees do better when the manager is positive in a stressful event. They can work towards a goal and encourage others when need be (Wegge, Shemla, & Haslam, 2014). The final key behavior would be self-awareness.
Though there are many good qualities in a leader, Catherine Meliniotis sums it all up in her article written for Advance Healthcare Network. For example, she discusses how it is always imperative to begin with good communication, continue to request feedback from staff, patients and families, encourage staff to provide their own ideas and suggestions, and ask your staff if you are focusing on the right concerns. Contemporary organizations expect advantageous styles of leadership to lead and facilitate operations as we move forward into the 21st century. This need requires leaders and organizations to instill a style of leadership advantageous to supporting and leading a culture towards organizational effectiveness and connecting to support and uphold organizational strategies. Thus, the success of an organization usually contains successful leaders who understand and support the needs of the employees. The characteristics of successful leaders include selflessness, mentoring, empowerment, influence, support and empathy among other positive traits (Hoffman, Bynum, Piccolo & Sutton, 2011; Karakitapoglu-Aygun & Gumusluoglu, 2013; Sabir, Sohail & Khan, 2011; Shankers & Sayeed, 2012).
Many definitions exist on what leadership is. Despite the many differences in definitions, they all describe the leader as someone who influences others. Leaders transform individuals around them allowing them to work to their full potential. In order for a leader to be successful they must be knowledgeable, self- confident, and effective communicators. These characteristics will create a positive workplace environment that results in an increase in productivity. Leadership is not defined by titles or salary. Leaders must acquire their skills and continue to improve on them through learning. Good leaders provide a vision and help motivate others to make that vision happen. The leader must be effective and successful in creating a strong institution.
In this theory leadership style changes as needed to ensure that the goal is achieved (Huber, 2014). Each situation may need to be addressed differently, which requires flexibility by all involved, especially leadership. Managers need to evaluate every individual to understand what they are capable of and how they fit the needs of the institution and or situation (Nash, 2015). As a nurse I think this is a very important trait for a leader to have because of how quickly things change and how we must work within our environment. For example, in healthcare we sometimes have to allow others to take control of a situation on to ensure the best possible outcome for each patient. In addition, the manager needs to ensure that each person works within the scope of their practice, functions at the highest level allowed and completes their tasks. To be a successful leader in healthcare and achieve desired outcomes requires a high level of flexibility by leadership. I would also say that the contingency theory would also fit into my leadership style. The basis premise of this theory is that each situation is different and leadership needs to take that into account when managing a situation (Huber, 2014). At times a leader needs to look at the bigger picture and incorporate that in their decision making process. When looking at a specific situation taking input from all parties involved can lead to a more effective solution. We can learn a lot form those around us and need to take that in account to be an effective
Chaos Theory Every leader has a leadership theory on which his or her leadership style is based. There are advantages and disadvantages to each theory. The effectiveness of each varies depends on how the leader uses the theory to guide his or her team to success. There are numerous theories that are being utilized in nursing leadership and management today.
The leadership model that is being chosen in this paper is the Theory X and Theory Y Leadership model and how to compare the two management style of each employee described in this paper. According to the Business Balls (n.d.), the Theory X manager is a person who is authoritarian and maintains a repressive style while showing characteristics of tight control and no development. They explain a Theory Y manager as a person who wants to have a high achievement, empower their employees, and giving their employees great responsibilities that they known that the person can handle.
Autocratic leadership theory is a part of the behavioural approach. In this leadership theory, leader makes all decisions and uses power to command and control the followers to achieve goal. According to Lewin(1939), “autocratic leaders are associated with high-performing groups, but that close supervision is necessary and feeling of hostility are often present” (p.173). It is incredibly efficient and tasks are completed quickly. Autocratic leadership can be beneficial when decisions need to be making quickly. For example, in emergency situation surgeon uses this theory because the patient’s situation is between life and death and there is no time to discuss with other members. Bass (2008) mentioned in the Leadership styles and theories article, “Autocratic leaders can be effective because they create good structure, and determine what needs to be done. They provide rewards for compliance, but punish disobedience” (Giltinane, 2013, p. 35-37).
Being an effective leader can be one of the most difficult jobs in the world. Whether you are new to this task, or have plenty of experience, it can be very frustrating at times. In order to be a successful leader, many characteristics and traits must be used. The three that I find are the most effective in order to be successful are positive attitude, having the ability to manage failure, and being able to focus on the task at hand. To start things off, let's talk about why having a positive attitude is crucial in order to be an exceptional leader.
There are times dependent on the organization, where an authoritarian type of leadership is better than a democratic style. This semester I have begun working at Washington Elementary School as a volunteer with Live Healthy Kids. I have seen the leadership in the organization in practice and understand the need for a more autocratic style of leadership within this organization. Live Healthy Kids is a program run through AmeriCorps that helps kids learn about healthy eating and better choices. Every week I go to Washington Elementary and help the leader, Ricci Davis, run the program for one of the second grade classes.
Through the centuries, different leadership theories have emerged. These theories focus on the qualities distinguished between leaders and staff/employees, and others looked at factors like situation and skill lever. Of these eight theories we will look at four.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
Contingency Theory “Contingency theory is a class of behavioral theory claiming that there is no best way to organize a corporation, lead a company, or make decisions” (Pfeffer, 1997). There is no simple or one right way to run things. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, two men named Henri Fayrol and Frederick Taylor continued the study of contingency theory. Research in the 1970’s dealt with the organizational structures and leadership styles for different situations (Thompson, 2005).
