Chaos Theory
Every leader has a leadership theory on which his or her leadership style is based. There are advantages and disadvantages to each theory. The effectiveness of each varies depends on how the leader uses the theory to guide his or her team to success. There are numerous theories that are being utilized in nursing leadership and management today. The most intriguing one for me is chaos theory. I believe that chaos theory is the most realistic for the operating room because it concedes that the manager is unable to accomplish every task at hand. The manager expresses the expectations of acceptable behavior and then allows the staff to freely assert themselves in various ways to achieve the goal (Huber, 2014).

Chaos theory suggests that simple systems consists of complex behavior, and complex systems may present simple behavior (Briggs & Peat, 1994). At the core of chaos is a delicate balance between forces of organization and disorganization (Briggs & Peat, 1994). It is difficult to accurately predict the course of events accurately, even with the simplest of systems. Two principles of chaos theory are randomness and complexity (Huber, 2014). Randomness is when you will not be able to predict the state at a future time, even if you knew everything about a system at a given time (Haigh, 2001). An example of this is a coin toss. Even if you could toss the coin an infinite amount of times and know the outcome every time, it would not help you predict the outcome of the next toss (Haigh, 2001). Complexity theory explains that long-term planning is not helpful, given such an unpredictable future (Sweeny & Griffith, 2002). The behavior of chaos systems may seem random, but it is created by complexity in the dynamic system, rather than the system itself (Sweeny & Griffith, 2002). It is paradoxical that even with the simplest of systems, it is still extremely difficult to accurately predict the course of events; yet, there is still some glimmer of order that appears spontaneously within that chaos (Huber, 2014). I believe that the world is orderly and I base my assumption off of what I know from bible, astronomy, biology, and physics. I do not think the universe is chaotic, I think the world functions uniformly starting from an atomic level.
In healthcare it is very important to have strong leaders, especially in the nursing profession. A nurse leader typically uses several styles of leadership depending on the situation presented; this is known as situational leadership. It is important that the professional nurse choose the right style of leadership for any given situation to ensure their employees are performing at their highest potential. Depending on which leadership style a nurse leader uses, it can affect staff retention and the morale of the employees as well as nurse job satisfaction (Azaare & Gross, 2011.) “Nursing leaders have the responsibility to create and maintain a work environment which not only promotes positive patient outcomes but also positively influences teams and individual nurses” (Malloy & Penprase, 2010.) Let’s explore two different leadership styles and discuss how they can enhance or diminish the nursing process.

In this theory leadership style changes as needed to ensure that the goal is achieved (Huber, 2014). Each situation may need to be addressed differently, which requires flexibility by all involved, especially leadership. Managers need to evaluate every individual to understand what they are capable of and how they fit the needs of the institution and or situation (Nash, 2015). As a nurse I think this is a very important trait for a leader to have because of how quickly things change and how we must work within our environment. For example, in healthcare we sometimes have to allow others to take control of a situation on to ensure the best possible outcome for each patient. In addition, the manager needs to ensure that each person works within the scope of their practice, functions at the highest level allowed and completes their tasks. To be a successful leader in healthcare and achieve desired outcomes requires a high level of flexibility by leadership. I would also say that the contingency theory would also fit into my leadership style. The basis premise of this theory is that each situation is different and leadership needs to take that into account when managing a situation (Huber, 2014). At times a leader needs to look at the bigger picture and incorporate that in their decision making process. When looking at a specific situation taking input from all parties involved can lead to a more effective solution. We can learn a lot form those around us and need to take that in account to be an effective
I believe that leadership is not something that you are born with, but that has to be learned over time. You learn to become a leader from watching other leaders, and also from personal experience. People should become leaders; so that they can help others do their best. They should not become leaders for the title and power that may come with leadership. Being a leader does not mean you get to boss people around by telling them what to do. The purpose of a leader is to guide others by encouraging, showing them the way, and by challenging them to do the best that they can do. I learned leadership through personal experience. In high school I played sports and had many class projects to do. My senior year was the first time my school had a soccer program, and I along with two other girls was captains. As we all know, when a group of girls come together, the drama comes too. All three of the captains had to work together and show the girls that if we wanted this program to be a success and grow, they had to work together as well. It was hard at first, but when we encouraged everyone, it worked out better than expected in the end. Also, in my business class, we had a lot of projects that were mostly group projects. During the end of the year, we had a project where we had to make up a new product. My partner and I were both seniors and it was a stressful time with finals, SAT scores, graduation, and trying to become honor graduates. We were tired and just did not want to do another project, but our teacher, Mr. Brace, did not give up on us. He showed us what to do, and encouraged us constantly every day. Support of a decentralized organizational philosophy can transform organizations, staff, and patients because it affects the culture, improves staff outlook, promotes personal involvement and encourages staff to reach higher levels of quality care. In my organization, nursing leaders should strive to involve all patient care units and staff in shared governance, educate unit leadership council chairs, and build on the positive aspects by empowering, motivating and developing staff members. In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
One of the most important concepts in thermodynamics is entropy. In thermodynamics, a system is any region of space that is to be studied. Entropy is a thermodynamic property of a system just like the temperature, pressure, and composition. Specifically, entropy is a measure of the randomness of a system and has units of joules per kelvin. A joule is a measurement of energy and a kelvin is a measurement of temperature. A system whose members are highly randomized is said to be highly disordered and therefore has higher entropy. Conversely, if the members of a system are highly ordered, the system is said to exhibit low entropy. Entropy is also the basis for the Second Law of Thermodynamics which states that the entropy of a system always increases (Nave, 2000). This explains why in nature things tend to go from orderly states to disorganized states. For example, rooms tend to get disorganized, ice tends to melt, objects tend to break, etc.
Simplistically, it is about finding order in the unstable, non-repetitive behavior of a continuous, nonlinear system. The theory “provides insight and guidance into the delicate and shifting relationship between order and disorder in ways not permitted in modern science nor imagined in more traditional knowledge processes” (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p 296). There are two basic principles guiding this theory. First, systems are essentially orderly disorders, meaning they use nonlinear behaviors to strive for stability and order. Secondly, seemingly small change can cause complex and drastically different behaviors (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p 296).
We can divide the theories that deal with leadership in 3 chronological groups. First were the trait theories. Until the 1940's, research in the field of leadership was dominated by these theories. Second came the behavioral theories which were very influent until the late 1960's. Finally, contingency theories are the most modern theories about leadership.
There are many different types of theories on leadership. There is Fiedler’s contingency theory, situational theories of leadership and House’s path-goal theory. These theories are used to make an individual or manager a more effective leader. They can be used as a guide for individuals and help them achieve whatever goal is set out by their organization or group.
