The process of applying an effective counseling framework takes time and dedication. Yet, the positive results of students’ academic success are impressive. A study conducted by Lapan (2012) reveals that students who received one-on-one counseling services were more likely to have better college outcomes than students who did not receive these services. Additionally, the author discussed how the many benefits of comprehensive counseling services impacted students’ lives. The comprehensive school counseling program assisted a substantial amount of students with college and career decisions, scholarships, financial aid opportunities, and an overall more productive future.
The compressive school programs are driven by student data and are based on academic, career, and personal/ social development. The programs are collaborating between the counselor, parents, and many other educators to create an environment that promotes student excellences (ASCA, 2016). A productive school counselor will focus on their skills, time and energy on direct and indirect services to all students. Therefore, to achieve those goals, the ASCA recommends that a school counselor should not have more than 250 students and that 80 percent or more of a counselor’s time in direct and indirect services. As a result, we will focus on the delivery of those services.
The amount of trust a client has in their counselor is going to be determined upon their world view (Sue & Sue, 2013). A persons world view is going to be shaped by their cultural upbringing and past experiences (2013). Counselors also need to understand that a clients locus of control and locus of responsibility is also going to be dependent upon their upon their upbringing and culture. For example American culture values self reliance and other cultures such as Asian cultures value collectiveness (2013). There is also the issue of oppression and discrimination that may leave a client feeling powerless, regardless of what they try to do. Counselors who are working with clients, such as these, may view their clients as lazy or lacking motivation,
Values, Morals, and Beliefs are components that play a role in an individual’s self-identity. The establishment of these components shape human nature, behavior, and the development of an individual’s purpose. The basis of these fundamentals has contributed to my desire to become a counselor. This paper will discuss my views of human nature, factors of behavior changes, goals of therapy, the roles of a therapist, and the counseling approaches that I chose to incorporate in a practice.
Academic advising plays a huge role in students’ lives and it is a share responsibility between the student and their advisors. There are many ways in which advising benefit students. Advising enhance students’ abilities to utilize the resources that colleges provide for their students. Guiding students to stay in the right track of their academic courses and following up with all the updates and requirements to graduate is also objectives of the advisors. Advisors encourage students to get involved in the college activities, such as clubs, sports, extra courses and so on of the resources that are available for students. They help students to find scholarships and prepare them to transfer to the next step of what they want to do after their college careers. However, many students these days do not take an advantage of this resource due to lack of Advising communication and others. The relationship between having a counseling program based on the ASCA national model and overall student success is examined. Three main goals of this study are to: (a) examine student achievement as measured by . . . . to determine if it is increased in schools that use a more fully implemented program based on the ASCA model, (b) examine if the comprehensive program is reaching all students regardless of gender, race/ethnicity, social-economic status (SES), etc. and (c) examine if there is a link between positive school climate and a more fully implemented program based on the ASCA model.well stated -
A school counselor’s role is vital in many schools across America. Many students see their counselor, to work on any emotional stressors, academic changes and challenges. This may include, interventions, group therapy and changes in class schedule, but sometimes with all the implementations given, students do not succeed in school. Perhaps one needs to take a closer look at the programs being implemented and its success rate. In addition, a counselor should guide itself using the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) to provide evidence based practices in schools.
Identifying a theoretical approach to counseling initially sounded like an overwhelming task; comparing old and respected ideas backed by extensive data and evidence to new and upcoming methods that are just gaining recognition is daunting. However, it did not take long to recognize that the Rogerian/person-centered theory was both intriguing and matched my own personal orientation. There have been many significant historical events and trends that have shaped the current school counseling profession to include the development of students’ social-emotional, academic, and college and career readiness. For instance, Frank Parsons, credited with starting the vocational guidance movement, helped to identify the important need of providing services and support to students in order to move them towards readiness for the industrial workforce (Erford, 2015). This helped, among other things, to shape the role of the school counselor in providing career development for students.

Aaron Smith stated that there should be an increase in guidance counselors. Guidance counselors are to guide the students in the right direction. Students are taking courses they do not need because they do not receive proper guidance or direction. "There are schools where they have one guidance counselor for a thousand students." There is no doubt that, interpersonal counseling can be both hard for client and counselor – a delicate balance. A balance that only works with a client that continually comes to counseling. Why is it that there is an attendance difference for Indigenous clients? What is it about the counseling process that has Aboriginal peoples “twice as likely not to return after the first session than Caucasian clients”(Campbell and Nuttgens, 2010.)? It’s important to discuss the implications for Indigenous clients that decline to return, and the implications for Indigenous clients that proceed with the counseling process. My reflecting skills at many points of the interview were not really good, in one instance I just made a general statement on Line 41 which was a judgement by me. I could have used repetition here and said “you are a lot less stress knowing the money will come in” instead of a general statement which ended up being a response to the client which is not suppose to be done. I did not use a lot of repetition during my interview with my client. This can be seen as a plus because using lots of repetition can be seen as a negative, it can appear to the client as if the counsellor is not paying attention and not understanding the messages that the client is communicating.
Having the support of others can encourage a person to work harder to reach their goal. For example, during high school most students never take into consideration how essential their Guidance Counselors are, until senior year of high school. Determining plans after high school can become stressful and requires additional guidance. Aside from being the backbone to students achieving higher education, Guidance Counselors jobs are to provide students with the means necessary to excel in high school and afterwards. This includes, selecting classes that best fit a student’s academic capabilities, giving out scholarship information, helping with college searches, and providing volunteer opportunities. Similarly, Guidance Counselors also have an obligation to cater to the needs of their students and encourage them to work harder for themselves. They constantly remind students about deadlines; through emails, phone calls, and public announcement on the intercom. This type of persistence pressures the students to get their paperwork in by or before the due date. Having a person take on a job, such as this one, is a large responsibility! They not only have the pressure of helping a couple of students prepare for their future plans, but the entire senior class to aid. Without a Guidance Counselor, students would have
