College Students vs. Laptops and Smart Phones Believe it or not there once was a time when smartphones and laptops did not exist. People did get degrees without writing a paper, using a laptop. People did indeed hand write pages and pages of notes and lab reports with a pencil. Distractions of notifications coming from apps were not a problem, but years ago people did not have a dictionary right at their fingertips. They did not just find a definition of word by a couple of clicks but rather had to flip through hundreds of pages that took twice as long. This creates the issue of multitasking. Another study was done and the results revealed that students who multitask using laptops and cell phones during homework and class time score lower on tests compared to those who do not multitask. On average when a student is studying they are interrupted every 6 minutes from social media notifications popping up on their smart phone or laptop screen creating loss of focus. Many students become more interested in what is happening in their technological social media life rather than their study habits. So do smart phones really make people smarter? No, they tend to hinder GPAs and filling their brains with lifelong notable knowledge.(the relationship between cell phones
Technology is something that seems to be on everyone’s mind in today’s society. Does it really help? When it comes to medicine, there have been huge medical advances with help from technology, saving thousands of lives all over the world. Our society has been forever changed with the introduction of the smartphone; getting movies, music and news faster than ever before. But what about education? Does technology go too far and interfere with the learning process, and relationship between professor and student? Smartboards, laptops, tablets and smartphones are becoming more and more frequent in today’s classrooms. It helps teachers engage the students in their work, and it caters to different types of learning between students. However, our progress
“There are almost 180 million cell phone users and it is rapidly expanding” (Betancourt). Nearly every student in the United States owns a cell phone. Cell phones have been around for forty years. The first cell phone was placed by Martin Cooper in 1973. Cell phones become increasingly popular as the twenty-first century technology becomes more advance. People in younger generation rely on cell phone to accomplish basic needs. Some even becomes addictive to the cell phone. For example, I have a cousin who considers cell phone as an important part of her daily life. If I ask her to put away her cell phone, she would complain “I can’t live without my cell phone.” Cell phone should be prevented from using excessively because if cell phone is used in an improper way, it would ultimately becomes a distraction device for students. Therefore, students would be lack in interpersonal relationship, distracted during class, which can lead to academic failure, and distracted while driving, which can lead to serious accident and death. The negative impacts of cell phone on students are significant matters that need to be addressed.
Forty-one years ago on April 7, 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper changed the world by making the world’s first cell phone call. With a 10-inch-long, 2.5-pound phone nicknamed “the brick” he called his engineering nemesis at the much bigger company Bell Labs (Here& Now, 2014). The phone gave 30 minutes of talk time after 10 hours of recharging and it cost a grand total of $3995. In those days, the average middle-class person could not afford to buy a mobile phone. By the late 1990s, cell phones became progressively accessible to the overall population. (Ef.org.vt.edu, 2014). Ever since then the sizes and the technologies in and of cell phones has been changing to accommodate the masses. Decades later, cell phones, and now smartphones, live in the pocket or purse of nearly everyone in the United States. Cell phones tell us the time, give us directions, take pictures, entertain us and help us exercise, all while making it possible to post each and every sordid detail to the internet without going anywhere near a computer. These new devices however convenient also bring complications along with them. This research paper will delved into the advantages and disadvantages of a cell phone, visit the health risk and factors affecting people who are exposed to cell phones, Discuss how cell phones have changed our way of communicating and socializing with one another, outline preventative measures surrounding the way cell phones have degraded our way of life and expound on the Thesis: Though cellular phones have provided many advantages since inception their cause more harm than their benefits they are worth.
Along with technology being a distraction, it can also cause students to be less social.
There are many rules set in place by school districts and administrators against use of cell phones in the class room. These rules span from kindergarten through twelfth grade and into college. In the article “The only thing to fear is one hundred and twenty characters” Kevin M. Thomas and Christy D. Mcgee inform their readers about the positive results cell phones can have in the class room. They state that cell phones have already helped bring literacy rates up in elementary schools across the nation. The article also shows the readers some applications that they can put on their child’s smart phone that will help them with their school work. These applications help with math, english, science and reading, just to name a few. Thomas and McGee also show negative points such as cheating, cyber bullying, and sexting. Although cheating and bullying have been around for a very long time and cell phones are just another avenue that they can use. They say that sexting is a new phenomenon but is more about bad morals than school productivity. Although there are negatives for allowing cell phones in schools, the benefits outweigh the negative aspects of cell phones. Having cell phones allowed in the classroom can have many beneficial outcomes. Cell phones can be very helpful for students in academics, safety, and communication.
In a study publish by the Marion Institute; Dr. Mercola states, “ More people in today’s world have cell phones than they do toilets. Cell Phones and other technologies have completely taken dominance in today’s world (Falk, 2013). Likewise, in today’s society it is undeniably rare to find a classroom that has distanced itself completely from technology. Today’s classrooms are filled with student taking notes on laptops and tablets, PowerPoint presentations, and the oh-so-sneaky students who seem to think that no one is noticing them as they use their cell phone. The overwhelming question is, is this helpful or harmful? There seems to be many distinct assumptions and opinions on this topic. Some are completely for the integration of cell phones
The effects of technology on society will always be a double edged sword. The debate is a never ending one, in which both sides have valid and compelling arguments. The Industrial Revolution reduced manual labor in the long run, but had negative consequences such as child labor and sweatshop conditions. Nuclear Power reduces the cost of producing energy, but raises serious environmental issues like pollution and radiation. In this day in age refusing to assimilate to at least some form of modern living is simply not an option. One invention causing controversy today that has yet to cease being alter, modified, and “improved” since its debut is the ever present cell phone.
Have you ever wanted a phone that is personalized for you? Android was released in 2008, a year after iPhone. In 21015, there are 2.5 billion Android users worldwide, compared to roughly one billion iPhone users. The Android is better than iPhone because of customization, variety, and design.
In conclusion, test messaging software, social media, addictive apps and games causes students to be avoiding their school work and distracted. Cell phones should be prohibited at school campus because they are disruptive in a classroom environment, causes students to be distracted, and to avoid their school work. Although not all students are connected or using social media, most are. This is a trend that is only on the incline and probably will not fall for a while. Others on the opposing side feel that students use social media in positive ways that benefit their lives. Which in reality it causes students’ grades to lower and their work to be weaker by not expressing their full potential, just going through the motions, and getting work done. Also, social media brings up issues such as cyber bullying which causes students to have academic struggles. Social media definitely a good communicate and does have several upside including, expressing emotions, staying connected with friends, coordinating plans and much more bonuses. It is overall a distraction to the teenage generation.
These are just some of the issues that come along with the use of mobile devices. Other issues that have arose are the need for text stops and law that prohibit the use of cell phones while driving (1, 2). People have now become so dependent on mobile devices that they feel they are missing a limb when they don't have the device in their possession (3). These are some of the more serious issues while some minor ones include: excessive use and a lack of patients because information is just a tap away (4). The excessive use of cell phones leads to other harmful effects such as a loss in studies because of excessive texting, calling, and being on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram. With these distractions students are not giving their studies their full attention, which then leads to poor grades. While the use of cell phones does have some good qualities the bad out weigh them.
However, this can prove to be a huge problem for many persons especially students because the use of social media could have a negative effect on students’ academic performance.
