With those reasons, it shows how technology can lead to being very distracting. Along with technology being a distraction, it can also cause students to be less social. b. Kids will be less social i. With all the social networking apps and chat apps, kids are starting to use those more than actual face to face interactions. They find it easier just to text someone how to do something instead of meeting up with them as having them explain it to them in person. With having face-to-face interactions, “students can form friendships and relationships with their peer” according to the article “5 Problems with Technology in the Classroom” by Heick. ii. Counterargument: Using technology can be helpful for when kids cannot meet up with each other. In Ben Johnson’s article ‘Too Much Technology and Not Enough Learning?” he does point out “Of course, if geographically disparate groups of students need to collaborate, technology certainly can help, but even still it can never fully replace face-to-face interaction”. iii. Over the past few decades, technology has advanced significantly. The use of calculators, computers, and other techniques in many fields has increased. On a large scale, technology is replacing traditional methods of instruction in the field of education. Many people believe that adopting technology in the learning process can increase productivity. However, David Gelernter, a professor at Yale University and a leading figure in the field of technology, suggests limiting the use of technology in the classroom in his article “Unplugged: The Myth of Computers in the Classroom,” published in the New Republic magazine in 1994.
Though there are some positive effects, the adverse impact of technology on education has been extraordinary. The technology community has worked hard to bring useful technology into our classrooms, all with good intentions to broaden our knowledge. With these good intentions also came about unwanted side effects such as distraction and disruption in the classroom. I can clearly remember many of my teachers yelling at us to put our cell phones, iPods, and iTouch phones away especially during lecture and exams. The yelling was not without just cause, students cheated with their devices along with updating their Facebook pages during class too.
I was surprised to learn that students from both the U.S. and abroad agreed that American schools had more technology. I think of Japan and Hong Kong as being very technologically advanced and did not expect to have more than them. Ripley reports that “the United States invests more heavily in technology in classrooms than even high-performing countries.” This result opens an interesting debate of whether technology advances student learning. In my high school, we had a one-for-one policy, meaning each student in grades 9-12 received a district-owned laptop. The laptops did indeed increase student learning, but for reasons other than what the school board wants to think. The laptops provided every student with a means to complete their homework. There were no more excuses of “My printer broke!” or “My Wi-Fi connection was down!” Each student was expected to download the assignment while at school, where the Wi-Fi was guaranteed. Then, the work could be completed at home and turned in during the next class session. The laptops provided accountability for all the students, but did not ‘enhance classroom lessons’, as was the intention. The school board liked to believe that the technology would increase interactivity in classrooms and open new doors for learning, but that interactivity that was discussed in board meetings was nonexistent in practicality. Some may not consider technology to be useful in education, but others like the author of “Project Classroom Makeover”, Cathy Davidson, recognize technology as a weapon to truly further education. Using these sorts of websites as a way of communicating causes many individuals’ social skills to decrease. A plethora of children and teens would rather stay inside and interact with their friends through the internet than go hang out with them. Before technology people were not afraid to go up to a random person and talk to them. Now many friendships form through the internet and these friendships are not genuine. A small ride on a metro or bus ride will show you just how little interaction goes on in a humans life do to the amount of use on their mobile devices. The role technology plays in socializing has a great impact on people’s interaction. People can be standing right next to each other with out saying one word to one another. While waiting for the next class to start or even during the class, people tune out the rest of the world and this can lead up to social isolation. Socializing is not just talking face to face, it’s our ability to interact, learn, and create original thoughts. Technology is hindering today’s youth and their ability to socialize is affecting their capacity to read, write, and communicate. Today’s youth depend on careful considerations for the implementation of technology. When students have no desire to learn and are given tools to distract themselves technology hurts them, or rather their test scores, more than students who learn with book or oral based teaching because the absence of distraction. Computers and iPads are very difficult to repair or replace compared to books, and because most people are not yet “technologically literate” enough to perform basic tasks for the maintenance of their computer, then it would just be easier to use books. These issues create question as to if students are ready for classes to require computer knowledge when some have difficulty learning the material as it has always been learned for thousands of years.
