Don’t take our word for it - see why 10 million students trust us with their essay needs.
In a study publish by the Marion Institute; Dr. Mercola states, “ More people in today’s world have cell phones than they do toilets. Cell Phones and other technologies have completely taken dominance in today’s world (Falk, 2013). Likewise, in today’s society it is undeniably rare to find a classroom that has distanced itself completely from technology. Today’s classrooms are filled with student taking notes on laptops and tablets, PowerPoint presentations, and the oh-so-sneaky students who seem to think that no one is noticing them as they use their cell phone. The overwhelming question is, is this helpful or harmful? There seems to be many distinct assumptions and opinions on this topic. Some are completely for the integration of cell phones …show more content…
Of those arguments, three major issues surface; cell phones are a distraction, they enables cheating, and that technology has not been needed in the past, so why start now? A distraction is defined as, a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something else. When technology is brought into the classroom distractions are a huge issue. “…Cell phone screens can become walls between students and professors. Students performing multiple tasks (instant messaging, Facebook updating, and so forth) are also blamed for distracting other students from concentrating on the lectures or classroom discussions” (Falk, 2013). Different types of technology, such as cell phones can give students many other ways to learn than just listen to a lecture. The first argument against cell phones in the classroom is, it is thought that technology adds an extra avenue for a student to cheat. With search engines able to give an answer in the matter of seconds, an overwhelming amount of students have admitted to cheating by using their smart phones. “ 52% admitted to some form of cheating involving the Internet” (Common Sense Media, 2011). Cheating is a huge issue, as it seems that students would rather risk their grades by cheating than simply study for a …show more content…
Unlike the past, technology is a big part of the global world today. The world is advancing in many different ways and technology is a big catalyst. As each day passes more technological advances are being put into effect. The Center of Technology states that “over just the last five years, technology has been rapidly changing and expanding in every field imaginable” (How Technology Has Changed Our Lives in the Last Five Years, 2013). With this in mind, it is difficult to fathom how much it will change in the years to come. In the past, many years of technology were implemented to change the rotary dialer phone to the “brick” cell phone. Changes now of days come faster than we can
” Carr uses this example to provide evidence of how smartphones pose as a distraction and interrupt students from their work. Carr also uses “nearly a hundred secondary schools.” This example is used so readers can grasp the large amount of schools that are involved in the issue. Lastly Carr uses “The subjects whose phones were in view posted the worst scores, while those who left their phones in a different room did the best.”
Technology has been slowly integrated into the classroom for many years now. Some may be older than others, but they have all seemed to make the learning and teaching process much easier and more effective. Computers were introduced to the curriculum to help students better understand data collection, research, and word processing, and Power Points were even added to give visuals to lessons. Cell phones on the other hand have been given the cold shoulder, and even completely banned by some schools. According to the article, “Are We Dialing Up Disaster,” by George Engel and Tim Green, eighty-four percent of high school students report owning a cell phone and that number continues to increase (Engel 39).
What is a cell phone? When did the cell phone come out? Cell phones are electronic devices used for communicating. Engineer Martin Cooper was the first individual who made the first public cell phone in 1973 (Browning). Later on, the cell phone became the most important tool for our daily life in the modern world. Today society is a cell phone-controlled world, to some degree. Even though it is true that cell phones bring countless conveniences to people, the use of cell phones should be restricted. Despite their advantages as mapping and communication tools, they can cause accidents when used while driving, restrict driver’s attention which can cause safety concerns, and even lead to health problems.
“There are almost 180 million cell phone users and it is rapidly expanding” (Betancourt). Nearly every student in the United States owns a cell phone. Cell phones have been around for forty years. The first cell phone was placed by Martin Cooper in 1973. Cell phones become increasingly popular as the twenty-first century technology becomes more advance. People in younger generation rely on cell phone to accomplish basic needs. Some even becomes addictive to the cell phone. For example, I have a cousin who considers cell phone as an important part of her daily life. If I ask her to put away her cell phone, she would complain “I can’t live without my cell phone.” Cell phone should be prevented from using excessively because if cell phone is used in an improper way, it would ultimately becomes a distraction device for students. Therefore, students would be lack in interpersonal relationship, distracted during class, which can lead to academic failure, and distracted while driving, which can lead to serious accident and death. The negative impacts of cell phone on students are significant matters that need to be addressed.
“I’m sorry I didn’t hear you. I was responding to a text message. What were you saying?” Have you ever heard this expression or something similar; we all have. This is clear evidence of how cellphones can be a very big distraction in many social settings. Some people check their cell phone first thing in the morning. It is so easy to waste time playing on your cell phone rather than doing something productive. Cell phone use, can cause harm physically, socially, and academically, although cell phones have some good qualities, advancements in technology is causing the world to gradually become dependent on technology.
Cell phones otherwise known as smart phones by today’s standards are an immense help to most Americans in many way. We use our cell phones daily for communication with friends and family through texting and phone calls, scheduling appointment, or social media. However the convenience of smart phones is being abused daily in several ways that can lead to severe impacts with the distractions they pose.
Over the past few years, technology has grown to be the driving force in human productivity and efficiency. Technology has been incorporated into our everyday lives to help us perform daily activities and bridge long distance communication. Although technology has brought us many advantages, it has also created quite few ethical issues along the way. Some of the biggest ethical issues technology has created revolve around cell phones. These issues include cell phone tracking and using the cell phone to cheat. Cell phone privacy can be compromised in many situations regarding phone call tracking and messaging. Cell phone use is also starting to be abused by students and other test takers to cheat on tests. Even if the person has good moral standards, sometimes the right decision to make is not always clear.
We have been allowing cell phones to impact our lives in negative ways. Our everyday life changes every day because of these cell phones and how we use them. I have noticed in everyone’s life, including mine, that it is hindering us socially and physically. My biggest concern is the negative impact it is having on our education and students allowing them to get in the way of their education. We need to get a hold on these cell phones before it gets any more out of hand, but I think it is too
There are so many ways that students use technology to cheat and so many devices that they use to accomplish this unethical behavior. The many different things that are commonly used in today’s society to make our life easier, but it is used in the wrong way are mostly small hand-held devices. Such things are cell phones, digital camera, PDA’s and lap-tops. These items are so high tech that they are able to store large amount of data that can be utilized to gather information to be used in assignments, exams and homework in the ways of cheating. Rather than worry about study for the test, students simply break into database and change their final grade.
Currently, cheating is seemed to be the serious issue in school. And one of its supporters is cell phones...
Higgins, Josh. “More Schools use Cell Phones as Learning Tools.” USA Today. N.p., 7 Aug. 2013. Web. 17 Apr. 2014.
Cell phones have only been in the picture for a short amount of time compared to how long people have been going to school but cell phones are everywhere now and make it difficult for schools to come up with what to do. As many believe they are a distraction and can be used for cheating and other negative stuff. There are also people that are highly in favor of having cellphones as they can be helpful with all the tools they provide and people who are not and it 's all about who makes a better argument. Cell phones used to just have communication abilities but that is far gone now you have the abilities to use apps and different functions that fit nicely into a school environment. Cell phones should be allowed in the classroom as cell phones provide positive benefits and are a helpful tool in learning.
One reason to consider the introduction of cell phones in learning is to promote digital etiquette, a concept that is foreign to most people. According to Liz Kolb (the author of “Toys to Tools”) Digital etiquette is “a basic set of rules you should follow in order to make the internet better for others, and better for you.” Kolb says in her book that “an educator’s job is to help students navigate and stay safe in their media world”. Students often are unaware to the consequences of their use and misuse of technology. Currently, many students do not overthink about protecting their own privacy. For example 55% of students do not care whether the digital material they use is copyrighted. Students ages 10 to 17 often do not take in appropriate cell phone use. According to Kolb “While nine out of ten 10- to 17- year olds believe that they are courteous on their cell phones, 52% admit to sending text messages at the movie theater, while 28% admit to sending texts at the dinner table.” These statistics show that teens are unaware with cell pho...
The first reason to support that mobile phones should be banned in schools is that devices can be used to cheating for instance, text friends about answers during a test, take picture of test questions with mobile phones to send to friends, search the internet to answers during a test, and store information on mobile phones to look at during a test. It is suggested by Benenson Strategy Group (2008) indicated that 65 per c...
I remember a classmate when I was in high school because he never talked to anybody. He spent most of his time on his cell phone or using his tablet, and he did not do well in school. He was different than my other classmates and I believe that he never felt comfortable in the classroom. Everybody knows that cell phones have changed peoples’ life dramatically. Cell phones are one of the most revolutionary advances in the last decades because they make things simpler and easier but cell phones have a strong impact on teenagers. Teenagers are in one of the most important phase in their lives because they are exploring the world and developing their capacities. I believe that cell phones have more negative than positives effects on teenagers for many reasons.
