When the average person thinks about fighting or self defence their first image is of pugilistic combat. This punching and kicking, which is striking, is only half of hand to hand combat with its counterpart which is grappling. Grappling refers to using techniques to gain an advantageous position or to cause injury to an opponent. Striking is a direct attack with the attackers body. A simple way of looking at it is to compare wrestling to boxing because wrestling is a discipline that is primarily grappling and boxing which is primarily striking. Grappling is a better discipline to learn than striking disciplines because in fights grappling is unavoidable, leads to a variety of versatile ways to end a fight, and once a wrestling esque scramble occurs one must grapple instead of striking or risk losing control of the fight. The traditional view of martial arts for most people comes from the movies, either featuring Bruce Lee or possibly the Karate Kid. With those classic references, the martial arts of today seem quite alien. What was once obscure has now become the mainstream with millions of martial artists of one degree or another. The violence of this sport is far beyond what boxing, or football could ever accomplish; while those sports often cause concussions and the occasional broken bone, some of the martial arts expect their students to break the bones of their opponents if the fight goes out of control or simply by accident. This brutality, usually shunned by civilized society, instead served to increase the sports reputation.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a battle with a wide variety of skills and fighting techniques that is used in competitions. Jiu Jitsu is the main skill sets used when MMA fighters are in competition. Some of the fighting techniques in MMA range from kicking, grappling to striking. MMA also have some forms of karate, boxing, kick boxing, Taekwondo, and Judo. MMA even have they own set of rules which was adopted on July 30, 2009, called the "Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts"(URMMA).
During a wrestling match, you are using all of your previous knowledge of the moves you have been practicing over and over. On top of that you need to have the mental mind set that you are gonna win. You may think it is easy because it's only a six minute match, but all the blood, sweat and tears that us wrestlers put in for those six minutes, may be the happiest or saddest experience of our life. We spend hours a day working with our coaches to make sure our technique is close to perfection as it can get. Most likely, you will win or lose a match on how well conditioned you are. We will usually wrestle a twelve minute match in practice, so that six minute match feels like nothing. Even with the time and effort you put in this sport, they will always be someone who might be just a little better.
Kempo teaches self-defense. Self-defense is the defense of one's person or interests through the use of physical force. The art of Kempo is a process of learning a skill through repetition. When you learn techniques such as the kicks and blocks from an instructor you will need practice to build these skills and the more you practice Kempo the more it seem like second nature. Once you have acquired these skills you no longer have to think about the techniques you will automatically react with self-defenses moves.

Allowing fighting makes the sport safer overall by holding players accountable. Referees often miss contact plays while play is going on. Retaliation by fighting prevents more of those aggressive plays from happening. Combat within the game serves as a deterrent to hurting star players because aggressors know there will be payback. Without fighting, more open body shots would occur, making the game much more harmful.

Boxing, which has been in existence and evolved from other forms of fighting longer than this country has been established, is a skill, talent, an ambition, and for most professional fighters, a love. Professional boxing, like virtually any physical recreation, is performed so that there are health risks, yet it is the athletes right to decide their personal levels of danger. Indeed, boxing discloses America’s disposition towards tradition. During the United States’ brief history, Americans have consistently managed to acquire cultural, social, political, and intellectual institutions from England, leaving no surprise to why the modern controversial sport of boxing, or prizefighting, traveled over sea to America.
The battle of who to blame for a person’s actions is a struggled faced every day in the human society. Society effects every element of a human’s life from birth to death; one’s actions are all be determined by society’s role. When I was a Freshman, I was curious about the sport of Wrestling. When I tried out for it, I was eager to learn more about it. It is not just rolling around on the mat it is a form of combat using grappling techniques such as throws, takedowns, pins, holds, and joint locks. In addition into this sport, there are a variety of ways to use these grappling techniques. Wrestling has many rich memories of it is history with a variety of wrestling styles and rules.
For those who do not know, I am a mixed martial arts fighter. Mixed martial arts fighting is “a sport allowing a wide range of fighting techniques that include striking, kicking, and grappling.” (www.merriam-webster.com) It is a compilation of forms of different martial arts. Two fighters will face each in the rings (known as the octagon due to its shape) for three to five five-minute rounds. I started taking martial arts classes when I was six years old. I wanted to be a mixed martial arts fighter all my life. I loved the thought of stepping into the octagon and pounding somebody senseless as a sport. My mother and father, at first, did not want me to take the Taekwondo classes because of this fact. It took a lot of begging to finally convince them to let me do it. They realized that it is very important for any child to learn some type of martial arts. It is essential to use for defense. Mixed martial arts are the thing that helped me cope with my rough childhood and mold me into who I am today. Over the past twenty years, the sport of MMA has revolutionized and has become very popular throughout the world. Despite this being said, other people very hesitant about accepting mixed martial arts. The sport of MMA is gradually becoming a safer sport. Even though it is considered a dangerous sport, other sports at proven to be more dangerous.
Martial arts is an amazing thing with amazing experiences. It has many, many health benefits. Some of them include flexibility, agility, posture, weight, stamina, and mental strength. Discipline is also a benefit of martial arts because you have to follow instruction if you want the desired results, and correct techniques. I can tell you from a first hand experience that martial arts is a way of living; for me, it gave me flexibility, agility, timing, reflexes, a sense of a higher being, resolve, patience, speed, power, leverage, planning, adaptability, enlightenment etc… What I am trying to say is that martial arts can give you so many things and with no drawbacks.
