Martial arts is an amazing thing with amazing experiences. It has many, many health benefits. Some of them include flexibility, agility, posture, weight, stamina, and mental strength. Discipline is also a benefit of martial arts because you have to follow instruction if you want the desired results, and correct techniques. I can tell you from a first hand experience that martial arts is a way of living; for me, it gave me flexibility, agility, timing, reflexes, a sense of a higher being, resolve, patience, speed, power, leverage, planning, adaptability, enlightenment etc… What I am trying to say is that martial arts can give you so many things and with no drawbacks.

It rises even more when you start to successfully spar and win against people. Discipline comes from listening to your instructor. Asking questions such as “Do I face my fist this way or that”, questions like these are what you should listen to. By listening to and doing what your sensei says you will learn discipline. Integrity comes from showing up every day and doing your best, even win your instructor is helping someone else. Honesty comes with this as well, when you admit your mistakes on the exercise it helps you know that honesty is right. Enlightenment comes from knowing there is a higher power and following the Way. Timing is a skill that takes both mental and physical disipline. Most people get a sense of happiness from training under a martial art that they love and enjoy. Even when it gets hard, if you love what you are doing you will not feel the pain at all. Certain styles are supposed to enhance your spirituality through fluid movements such as taichi. Taichi in general is a very flowing and stress relieving activity. Unfortunately a lot of practitioners of martial arts have evolved it into a exercise, not a fighting/ self defending. This is all and good if that’s what you are looking for but spirituality is found in hardship, and in peace times. For me it’s a fundamental part of who I am and what I do. A lot of people that I know feel the same way. Once you get into it and push yourself to go, you will fully and truly love it. It’sust an amazing feeling to be able to trust your body, mind, and spirit to make the right decision, even in stressful situations or situations of great danger. You should be proud when you can use your art,whatever that may be, in your everyday life; You will be enlightened through martial arts.
